Approved by School Committee November 25, 2013 2 3 Letter from the Principal

Dear Newton North Students, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to another exciting year at Newton North High School . As usual, this booklet is sent during the middle of the summer, and upon seeing it we all hope and pray that summer will last just a little longer . It is not time for the 7:50 am bell yet, but please do take a moment to look at the calendar, the first day of school schedule, the letter from your housemaster, and all the other important information included within these pages .

As I hope you know, Newton North is a special place because of our talented and dedicated students, parents and faculty . Please help us continue our strong tradition of excellence by getting involved in our school through avenues such as our Fine and Performing Arts program, our Athletics program, our clubs, our student government, our PTSO, and all of our amazing activities . Each year, I challenge our students to leave Newton North a little bit better than they found it, and getting involved is a great way to make your mark on our school .

I want to remind all families that our PTSO works hard every year to provide a detailed student directory . I ask that you take a moment to review your information, so you can be assured that you will be included in this directory .

Please also remember that we no longer mail anything home, as we rely heavily on electronic communication through Parent Connect . The log-in instructions for Parent Connect is included in this booklet . Please take a moment to log on and check your contact information . If you do not have computer access or have any problems, please contact your house office .

Mark your calendars now for Back-to-School Night on October 1st and check out the North calendar in the booklet for our grade-level nights and parent-teacher conferences .

Our all school summer reading this year is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer . This book is about Oskar Schell, a nine year old boy with Asperger’s, who loses his father on 9/11 . The story follows Oskar’s search to identify the lock that belongs to one of his father’s keys . As Oskar explores New York City looking for the answers, he learns about himself and his family, makes new , and deals with the grief of losing his father . The special education department will be leading an all school discussion of this book On October 2nd .

I am excited to welcome everyone back on September 2nd .

As always, we appreciate your continued support and partnership .

Best,

Jennifer Price Principal

4 5 Things to Know

Places You Should Know… (For an in depth review of policies and procedures please refer to the Student Handbook .)

Main Street: is the large open space outside of the cafeteria Homeroom: You are assigned a homeroom as a freshman and you will be in that homeroom for four years . You go to homeroom after the first block every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday . Nurse's Office: is located between the Main Office and the athletics area . Go there when you need medical aid, have to go home sick, or hand in physical forms for athletics . Tiger's Loft: is located on the first floor near the Main Office . All of the food is cooked by students . You can eat there during second and third lunches . Things You Should Know…

N-Rule: Is an attendance grade which means "no credit” and is given in lieu of a letter grade on your report card, reflecting insufficient attendance in a class during the marking period . Two N's in the same course may result in a student receiving no credit for the year in that course . Lockers: Your locker is assigned to you by the house secretary at the beginning of the year, and will be yours for all four years . Bring in your own lock . You are responsible for the maintenance of your locker . Report any damage to your homeroom teacher and housemaster . Study Halls and Unscheduled blocks: Freshmen and 1st semester sophomores are assigned to a study hall when they do not have a class . Second semester sophomores, juniors and seniors have open campus with approval of the Housemaster . Lunch Blocks: Lunch Blocks are split into three lunches every day . First lunch is generally for freshmen, second for sophomores, and third for juniors and seniors . Your teacher for that block will tell you which lunch to take . What do you do if . . .?

You're absent, late or leaving school before classes are dismissed: The house office monitors all attendance . There are a few things we require you to do if you are absent, late or leaving school before classes are dismissed: •If you are going to be absent, late or dismissed early, please have a parent/guardian call the house office by 10:00 a m. . leave your name and homeroom # on the answering machine . •If a parent does not call, a parental note is required the day of a late arrival or early dismissal or the day following an absence . Without a note or phone call, the student will not be excused by the office . Your teacher is delayed: Do not leave, wait for 10 minutes, and then send someone to a house office to see if the teacher is absent . A Housemaster will give further instructions . Someone else's stuff is in your locker: Report it to your house office . You have a problem with your schedule or you have other concerns about school in general Talk to your guidance counselor, Housemaster or homeroom teacher .

6 7 Riley House - Class of 2018

August 2014 Dear Students, Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2018, Welcome to Newton North - Riley House! My name is Mark Aronson and I am excited to be your Housemaster beginning next year . On Tuesday, September 2nd, NNHS will start the school year with a Freshmen Orientation Program designed to help your transition to high school . Of course, it’s natural to feel both excited and nervous for this new experience . All of the adults in the building are ready to support your transition and are focused on helping you achieve your goals . We expect all students to develop strong self-advocacy skills and to be active learners . Newton North is a “unique” high school where every student can find his or her niche and thrive academically and socially . We believe that every student, guided by his or her special talents and abilities can achieve his or her full academic and social potential . I strongly believe that consistent communication and collaboration between home and school are necessary steps to help all students to have a successful freshmen year . As a first step in preparation, please review the information found in this booklet . I have highlighted a few points below: Riley House Office: The House office is your destination for most issues that you would have addressed in the Main Office in middle school . Ms . Roberts the Riley House Administrative Assistant, will help you navigate high school . Attendance: Good attendance is vital to your learning and performance in high school . Thus, we expect all students to report to all classes, on time every day . Please read the attendance policy in this booklet . It is very important to follow the attendance procedures outlined in this booklet . Please do not jeopardize receiving credit for a course by failing to follow the attendance policy . Homeroom (HR): HR meets for 10 minutes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and attendance is mandatory . HR is a great opportunity to connect with peers and your homeroom teacher . Schedule: You will review your schedule in homeroom on the first day of school . If you have study halls on your schedule, you will be assigned to a classroom where you will be expected to study and or complete homework . All freshmen must remain on campus at all times during the school day . X block (the last block on Mondays and Thursdays): Students and teachers reserve and use X block for extra help and consultation . Locker Assignment: Your locker is for your use only . (No sharing/swapping lockers .) Use your locker to store your books and coats . Organize your books and materials so that you are ready to learn! Electronic Devices must be turned off and put away during classes . Students are not permitted to check voice mail, text messages or email during class time, even if the caller is a parent, please communicate after school plans/needs before school . Communication: Parent/guardians: Please send an email to Ms . Roberts at (maura _roberts@newton .k12 .ma .us) to receive e-updates from Riley House and visit our website on a regular basis . Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns by phone or email . I wish you and your family a fantastic rest of the summer! See you on September 2nd! Sincerely,

Mark Aronson 6 Riley Housemaster 7 Barry House - Class of 2017

August 2014 Dear Students, Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2017:

I hope you are enjoying your summer! I have enjoyed the rest and relaxation and look forward to the start of the new school year . As rising sophomores, I hope you have had an opportunity to reflect on your first year at Newton North . I look forward to supporting you academically and socially as you navigate the new challenges that lay head .

Sophomore year brings the potential for increased freedom . At the start of the second semester, sophomores who are in good academic and behavioral standing will be eligible to earn open campus privileges . These priv- ileges give students more choices about how to use their study hall blocks . Instead of being placed into study halls, sophomores with open campus privileges may go to the library, the cafeteria, or may leave the building .

To earn open campus privileges, sophomores must meet the following criteria:

- Earn grades of C- or higher in all courses - Have no attendance grades of N (including homeroom) - Have no grades of I (incomplete) - Be enrolled in a minimum of 24 blocks of structured learning time - Be approved for open campus by the housemaster

Students who are not eligible for open campus privileges must attend their assigned study hall(s) . Students who are not eligible after second term, but improve their grades during the third term, may earn open campus privileges for term 4 .

Please note that parents/guardians may choose to deny their son(s) or daughter(s) open campus privileges with a request made to the housemaster .

I believe communication between families and the school is essential . Please feel free to contact Ms . Tobin or me with questions or concerns . If you are not on the Barry House family email list, please contact Ms . Tobin .

Enjoy the rest of summer! Ms . Tobin and I look forward to working with you!

Sincerely,

Aaron Sanders, Jr . Housemaster, Barry House

8 9 Adams House - Class of 2016

August 2014

Dear students and families:

I hope this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying your favorite summer pastimes . While I certainly appreciate the break, I also look forward to beginning a new academic year . A unique perk of being a student, and also of working at a school, is the ability to start fresh each September .

For students and families of Adams House, the thought of starting fresh in eleventh grade may feel like a mixed blessing . While students might look forward to beginning school, they may also be concerned that junior year often gets associated with stress . Whether it be the junior thesis, the SATs, or thinking about college admissions, junior year can make students feel like the stakes have been raised . Indeed, eleventh grade represents an important part of one’s high school course, so I encourage students to put forth their best efforts . At the same time, I also encourage students to learn to strike a balance between pushing themselves to perform and allowing themselves time to kick back and relax . If that balance ever feels out of reach, please know that I am available to suppaort students, as are our teachers and counselors .

Like second semester sophomores, juniors are eligible for open campus privileges . In order to earn them, juniors must earn grades of C- or higher in all of their classes, have no Ns or Is on their report card (including homeroom), be enrolled in at least 24 blocks of structured learning time, and demonstrate good citizenship . Juniors with open campus privileges may leave campus during their free periods . Those juniors who are ineligible for open campus will be enrolled in Focused Study Halls . If parents do not want their son(s) or daughter(s) to be allowed off campus, they may opt out by contacting me at (617) 559-6310 or david_turcotte@newton .k12 .ma .us .

Please contact me or Lorene Shapiro, if you have any questions or concerns . If you have not already done so, please sign up for the Adams House e-mail list by contacting Mrs . Shapiro at lorene_shapiro@newton .k12 .ma .us so that you receive our periodic announcements .

Enjoy the rest of summer . Ms . Shapiro and I look forward to seeing you all soon .

Sincerely,

Dave Turcotte Housemaster

10 11 Attendance Policies

What to do if…

You’re absent, late or leaving school before classes are dismissed?

Notify your house office. See attendance section for details.

*******

Attendance Policies and Procedures

Attendance

Teachers maintain records of student attendance in each of their classes. In addition, one period each day is considered the daily attendance period. If you are absent during the daily attendance period, an automated phone call will be made to your home, indicating that you are absent from school. Daily attendance is taken at the following times:

Monday: C-block Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: homeroom Friday: B-block.

Parents or guardians are required to call the house office to excuse any absences by 10am on the day of an absence.

Tardy to School

o If you arrive to school late, your parent or guardian should call the house office and indicate your expected time of arrival. You may also bring a note to the house office with your time of arrival. Either way, you must report to the house office when you arrive to school. Do not bring notes to your teacher. o Students arriving late without a note or parent phone call should go directly to class. The house office will not provide an excused note.

Dismissal

o When a student needs to be dismissed from school early, a parent/guardian must call the house office or the student must bring a note from home to the house office prior to the dismissal. Otherwise the absence is considered unexcused. o The house secretary will provide a dismissal slip. If you do not get a dismissal slip prior to leaving the school, your absence will be considered unexcused. o Students who return to school after being dismissed must check in with the house office, where they will receive an attendance slip. o If you are ill, the school nurse should dismiss you.

Please bring all notes to the house office. If the secretary is unavailable, you may drop the note off in the box provided. Please be sure your name, the date and the time of arrival are written clearly across the top. Thank you for your cooperation.

Failure to follow the attendance procedures may jeopardize course credit. Please refer to the Student Handbook for more information regarding the N-rule and receiving course credit. Thank you for your cooperation.

10 11 Open Campus

To: Parent of Second-Semester Sophmores, Juniors and Seniors

From: Housemasters

Re: Open Campus

Date August 2014

Freshman and first-semester sophomores DO NOT have open campus privileges and are not permitted to be outside the school building without adult supervision during the school day . They are assigned studies during their unscheduled blocks . Students are expected to bring appropriate materials for independent study . Regular and punctual at- tendence is expected .

Second-semester sophomores and all juniors who demonstrate good citzenship and are in good academic standing (grade of C- or higher) are eligible for open campus upon Housemaster approval . These students may go to the cafeteria or go to the library, or they may work with a teacher in a supervised setting or leave the school grounds/

Seniors with open campus privileges may not congregate near classrooms, hallways, or other unauthorized areas while classes are in session . We ask our students to be respectful of our neighbors and not to congregate in nearby yards or neighboring street, in particu- lar, the areas of Blithedaile St ., Kimball Terr ., Elm Rd ., Lowell Ave ., Hull St . and Dexter Rd . The Housemaster of parents/guardians can deny or revoke open campus privileges at any time .

Open campus if an opt- out program and parents should contact their child’s housemater if they are interested in opting out .

12 13 Home - School Communication

Home School Communications

Philosophy

Communication between home and school fosters an environment that supports the development of life-long, independent learners. We believe that, as young adults, our students assume primary responsibility to account for their actions, to communicate regularly with their teachers, and to seek out school personnel directly for assistance and problem resolution.

As students assume more responsibility for themselves, we believe that they can and should be included in communications and meetings, increasing their commitment to their own progress as independent learners and securing their investment in the outcomes of such collaborations.

Together we share the challenge of fostering this growth in independence as students move through their time at Newton North. We recognize this can sometimes be a difficult process - a time when young adults may struggle to find this independence, and, to that end, there are many adults in the building to help them.

Support

The following adults are available to assist your child at school: teachers guidance counselors housemasters coaches and after-school activity advisors special education liaisons (if applicable)

Sharing of information between home and school develops this supportive relationship further by celebrating successes, discussing areas of need, and communicating information about other situations (in and out of school) which may impact a student’s learning.

12 13 Home - School Communication Continued

Guidelines

1. Students benefit when faculty, staff and parents communicate respectfully and effectively. 2. Teachers convey their preferred communication form at the start of courses (email or phone). 3. Parents and school staff acknowledge the volume of information that circulates each day and are respectful of time demands. 4. Parents and school staff act respectfully at meetings and forums and are considerate of speakers in asking questions and making comments. 5. Specific concerns should be addressed to the classroom teacher first. 6. To respect everyone’s time and commitments, communication responses within two business days are recommended. 7. Beyond the regular school communications, families of students who need additional support may contact a classroom teacher. 8. Concerns that cannot be resolved within two or three communication exchanges with the classroom teacher may warrant additional consultation, possibly involving department chairs or housemasters in more complex situations. 9. When these exchanges do not lead to quick resolution of concerns, families and school personnel may desire phone or in-person meetings for further discussion.

Regular School Communication

The following scheduled meetings and communications occur regularly: Back-to-school mailing (Aug) Back-to-School Night (Oct) Report Cards & Tiger Tales: Principal’s Newsletter (Nov, Jan, Apr, June) available through the PARENT PORTAL (see access info on next page) Parent Conferences (Nov & Dec) Emails from Housemasters & Principal Emails and website updates from PTSO School website Special Education documents and meetings Newtonite School Newspaper – available on-line

Education Team Conferences

Educational Team Conferences (ETCs) are available for students who are struggling due to academic and/or emotional difficulties. Meetings include the student, guardian(s), counselor, teachers, and, at times, housemaster in order to share information, express specific concerns, and create an action plan for support. Anyone may request an ETC; scheduling is handled by the counselor and guardian(s), with notification generated by 14 the house secretary. 15

Student Support Programs

Supports Available to All Students

Please contact your child’s counselor or housemaster regarding any of these programs .

Help Room, located in room 242 The Help Room offers students academic support in every major content area . Each period, a teacher from one specific department is assigned to the Help Room . A schedule is posted on the Help Room door so that students can see when there is a teacher available from the department in which they need assistance . Students may go to the Help Room during their study or free periods .

Focused Study, located in room 240 Focused Study Halls are comprised of small groups of students who need extra support in one or more of their classes . A Focused Study has fewer students than a Directed Study, and a teacher is available to provide academic guidance . Focused Studies meet next door to the Help Room . In small studies, it is easier for housemasters, teachers and counselors to track student attendance and monitor academic progress .

Peer Tutoring The Peer Tutoring Program pairs 9th and 10th graders with upperclassmen to get help in specific subject areas . Students commit to Peer Tutoring for a semester . The tutoring session replaces a study hall, so attendance is mandatory . Tutors are selected after being recommended and interviewed by teachers . Teachers may also recommend students be tutored in the program .

PM Program The PM program meets for 2 hours after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday . Newton North staff serves as the tutors, and they provide support with homework completion, test and quiz preparation, time management, and organization . In some cases, students choose whether to attend the program, or students may be mandated to attend by parents and housemasters .

After School Program The After School Program is a free tutorial program that takes place from 3:00-4:30pm on Mondays and Thursdays . Newton North staff serves as the tutors, and they provide support with homework completion, test and quiz preparation, time management, and organization . Tutors also communicate with students’ parents and teachers . Tutoring is offered in all major subject areas, including English, math, science, history, Spanish and French . Welcome to the 2014-2015 Newton North PTSO!

Your PTSO strives to bring together the parents/guardians of our diverse student body in ways that are both enriching and enjoyable. We have several volunteer openings. Please go to www.NorthPTSO.org to read more. • Learn something new at the Huntington Lecture Series, talks delivered by parents and teachers addressing cultural interests; and at fun and informative PTSO events, including the Just Think: Teens Making Smart Choices expo.

26 27 School Security Camera Policy SCHOOL COMMITTEE POLICY SECURITY CAMERAS

At the high schools only, permanent camera installations will be permitted in public areas. These installations will NOT be located in classrooms, office areas, locker rooms or bathrooms. The purpose of these installations is to monitor public areas where the potential for criminal activity is greatest (false fire alarm pulls, graffiti, theft, etc.). The cameras will only monitor passage in and out of these areas. This will allow administration to review the activity in the immediate public area shortly before and after the crime took place, reducing the number of potential people to interview. The recording, viewing and storage of the recorded data will follow the attached protocol. (Attachment-Protocol for Security Camera Recorded Data).

Protocol for Security Camera Recorded Data Approved by School Committee 6/14/10

Security camera recordings will be viewable in each building by authorized designees only. Camera Placement:

Camera installations will only be located in public areas such as hallways, athletic areas, large public gathering spaces, parking lots and public walkways. The purpose of these installations is to monitor public areas where the potential for criminal activity is greatest (false fire alarm pulls, graffiti, vandalism, backpack and personal belonging theft, etc.). The cameras shall not be placed in areas where there may be a reasonable expectation of privacy by staff and students (e.g. rest rooms, locker rooms, private offices, department offices, conference rooms, staff lounges).

Signage and Notification:

Signs will be posted in public entryways to the buildings and at other conspicuous locations informing persons that the building and grounds may be under video surveillance. The posted signs will read: Surveillance Cameras in Use. The District shall notify students, staff and the general public that video surveillance will occur on school property through use of the signage and other appropriate notifications including a notice in the student handbook.

Limited Access to Recordings:

• The Superintendent or his/her expressly authorized designee shall oversee video surveillance. • Only individuals authorized by the Superintendent or his/her designee may view the surveillance recordings. • Only the principal and/or superintendent will decide when and if viewing needs to occur. • Police access will be determined in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding with the Newton Police Department.

Viewing:

• There will be no monitoring of live recordings. • Reviewing the recordings will occur only when a suspected crime is committed inside or outside the building (e.g. vandalism, graffiti, etc.). • Viewing the data is to be performed by a minimum of two administrators that have been expressly authorized to do so by the principal. • A log book shall include the following details: the persons viewing the data, what event triggered the viewing, the date/time viewed, what was found on the recording, whether the data was copied or forwarded, and what consequences were imposed as a result of the recorded information. • Information obtained through video surveillance may only be used for disciplinary investigations, security or law enforcement purposes. No sound is to be monitored or recorded in connection with the video surveillance system. • Surveillance system misuse shall be addressed on a case-by-case basis by the District.

Short Term Data Storage:

• Video recordings (with the exception of those segments that evidence a crime being committed) will be maintained for a maximum of fourteen (14) consecutive days and then deleted. All such recordings shall be treated as confidential and shall not be released to individuals or agencies outside of the District except through subpoena or other court order requiring such release. • Any law enforcement agency may be provided with a duplicate of the recorded materials in conjunction with an ongoing investigation by that agency. Notification to the Superintendent’s office shall take place for each duplication of data.

26 27 Letter From The Health Office Summer Reminders from the School Nurse

Medication Pick-up: Parents of students who have medication stored in the health room should pick it up by the last day of school, June 26. All medication (pills, epi-pens, inhalers, etc.) not picked up will be discarded. Please plan ahead to pick medication up so it is not wasted! Medication may not be carried home by the student -- it must be picked up by a parent. School nurses will not be available after June 26 to return medication to families.

Medication Order Reminder: All medication orders expire at the end of the school year. If you are visiting your child’s health care provider during the summer, consider requesting a new medication order for the school nurse. All medication, prescription or over-the-counter, requires an order. The Medication Permission Form and the Medication Policy are both available online at http://newtonma.gov/gov/health/school.asp

Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Available: The results of the latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) administered to Newton middle and high school students every two years since 1998 are now available. The survey is largely based on a similar survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Questions on the anonymous and confidential survey focused on issues such as substance abuse, violence and safety, as well as physical and mental health. Highlights of this year's survey include a continued decline in tobacco use among Newton youth, a decrease in bullying, but a slight increase in alcohol use and in reports of students who are worried about school, social and appearance issues. For more information about the survey, how it is administered, how the data can be interpreted, and a summary of the results, visit the Health and Human Services Department website at www.newtonma.gov.

West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease Prevention: Newton residents were diagnosed with both Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus last year. Take steps to avoid getting sick! Mosquito repellant not only works for mosquitoes, but helps repel ticks as well. Use a repellant with DEET, and follow label instructions for concentrations appropriate for children. Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito hours, particularly once West Nile Virus has been detected in the mosquito population. Remove containers around your home (tires, kid pools, pots, tarps) that could allow mosquitoes to breed. Check your body for ticks after being outdoors and remove them immediately to avoid disease transmission.

Shoo the flu! Seasonal influenza vaccine will be offered this fall during the school day to students and employees. Both the flu shot and the nasal spray flu vaccine will be available to all students in Kindergarten through grade 12, by parental consent only. Consent and screening forms will be posted at www.newtonma.gov/flu by mid-September, in preparation for the October/November clinics. Insurance information will be requested, but all students are welcome to receive the vaccine at no charge.

The flu clinic date for Newton North High School will be November 14, 2013. Forms (available mid- Sept.) will be due to the school nurse by November 12. This schedule is confirmed unless the flu vaccine supply is delayed, in which case the school nurse will notify families of an alternative date once the vaccine arrives.

Have a happy and healthy summer!

IMPORTANT CALCULATOR INFORMATION

MATH DEPARTMENT

Dear Parent or Guardian,

There are many innovations in the use of technology in mathematics education. At Newton North one of the tools we use in all courses is a calculator. Students are expected to bring a calculator to class as part of their materials.

Some important notes regarding calculators:

· Most teachers do not allow students to use their cell phones as calculators in class.

· For parents/guardians of incoming freshmen, it may behoove you to look ahead in your child’s math sequence below to see what calculator will be required in grades 10-12 (in order to avoid purchasing multiple calculators during the four years).

· The TI-Inspire is not recommended by the NNHS math department. Our graphing calculators of choice are: TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition. The TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus are acceptable as well, though they are not as highly recommended.

· Please note that calculators are also required for all science and engineering classes at NNHS. Students may use either a scientific or graphing calculator in his/her science class. Students must bring their calculator to science class every day. Thus, a calculator is a doubly important school supply for your child.

· You may find used calculators or calculators on sale on the internet (e.g. Craigslist, ebay). The earlier you look, the better your chances are of finding a good deal.

· If it is a problem for a student to purchase a calculator of his/her own, we would encourage the student to contact his/her math teacher during the first week of school so that we can help. You may also call or email me directly to assist in this manner.

SEE NEXT PAGE FOR A LIST OF OUR RECOMMENDED CALCULATORS BY COURSE.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
