Kade Simpson Medal

Today, Kade will present the Kade Simpson Medal, for ‘Best On Ground.’ Being named after such a prolific Emerald personality, we are sure that this will be a medal that all players would be honoured to receive. As it currently stands, we hope for this tradition to be continued into future seasons, as we continue to celebrate the culture of the ENFC.

We are hoping to build on the culture of the Emerald Football Club. As part of this, we are looking to build and maintain our connections with the many past personalities of our club.

In a new initiative, the Kade Simpson Medal Day, coinciding with the President/Sponsors’ Luncheon, is a chance to celebrate those players who have utilised the Emerald Football Netball Club, as a stepping stone towards playing sport at a professional level.

The EFNC hopes to provide the chance for players of all skill level, to participate in their favourite game, however, also wants to provide a base of support for those who endeavour to take their sport to the next level.

Kade Simpson is a highly regarded AFL footballer. He has played 144 games for the Carlton Football Club, (131 consecutive games, second current highest in the AFL). Kade has represented Australia twice in the International Rules Series, on the second occasion, winning the Jim Stynes Medal.

Kade has been spotted supporting Emerald (and his brother, Ryan) at our local games.

Today Kade will also be on the microphone to chat to the kids and adult fans alike, so don’t miss out!

Trivia

Thank you to Karen for supplying this information.

In a previous edition of the YVMDFL Grapevine, it had an article called "Keiko's History".

In this article, he lists the highest scores in the League’s history, from 1891-2011 and the lowest scores from that period as well.

Emerald kicked the highest score in the League’s history back in 2000:

Emerald 68-32-440 defeated Boronia Park 3-1-19

Emerald has also kicked one of the lowest scores in 1924:

Emerald 0-3-3 against Ferntree Gully 4-0-24 From the Editor – Robyn Kuys

Round 7 Emerald v Kinglake

Seniors: Report by Steery

At home to Kinglake and playing for the CFA shield, which Emerald had yet to win? Now in its third year, yes three years since Black Saturday, Emerald started the game well with ten scoring shots to three, but only a twelve point lead at quarter time, leaving the visitors with a sniff.

The second quarter was much the same, Emerald dominating the play but not the scoreboard, increasing its lead by ten points.

The third quarter saw Emerald again dominate, but with seventeen points in three quarters of footy, making what should have been a one hundred point lead, only forty one points.

The last quarter Emerald finally kicked straight, adding five goals, one point, to run out comfortable winners and our name going on the CFA shield for the first time.

Well done boys!

Final Score: Emerald 16-18-114 defeated Kinglake 11-2-68 Goals: M. Cox 5, J. Taylor 2, D. Porter 2, A. Hellriegel 2, L. McKenna 2, J. Cousins 1, B. Starkey 1, S. Buhmann 1 Best Players: D. Rout, B. Kennedy, L. McKenna, S. Kenny, R. Simpson and J. Taylor

Reserves: Report by J.C. Round 7 and we needed to give our all against Kinglake and we certainly ran out with determination.

The centre boys started well and were really moving the ball well and giving our forwards good delivery, but we couldn’t put the score on the board.

The second quarter started much the same, but Kinglake started to put some pressure on our back line and it was good to see the boys stand tall and be relentless with their pressure.

By the long break we were on top, but not really dominating the game.

The second half was a bit of a tug of war for the first few minutes, until our back half started getting on top and we were linking up well through the lines.

The last quarter we were in control, but Kinglake flooded our forward line and made it hard to score.

In the end, we ran out winners on the score board, but I honestly believe we can and must play better, smarter footy, to beat the top sides.

Final Score: Emerald 10-14-74 defeated Kinglake 3-2-20 Goals: J. Robson 4, L. Whyte 3, N. Jansen 2, J. Mather 1 Best Players: B. Hartnell, S. Paull, N. Jansen, M. Hedger, J. Marshall and S. Nuttall U/18s: Report by Sully The boys performed well today and ran away with a big victory.

It was a great team performance with a lot of good contributors. Jarrod Donders and Jason Burns were good up forward with four goals each.

Well done! Next week will be a big test against Seville.

Final Score: Emerald 19-11-125 defeated Kinglake 2-5-17 Goals: J. Donders 4, J. Burns 4, B. Stephenson 3, D. Cann 2, D. Harris 1, C. Thomsen 1, B. Miller 1, R. Strong 1, M. Quinn 1, A. Thomson 1 Best Players: C. Thomsen, D. Cann, J. Donders, J. Burns, A. Thomson and J. Wilson

Round 3 Emerald v Marysville Veterans: Report by Goldy, Gotchy.

A bright sunny day greeted the boys, for our clash with the new comers, Marysville (Villains). Playing at home in windy but great ground conditions, we were set for a good contest. Marysville were short five players, fifteen minutes before the game, (for those who played for us last year, we all know how that feels). Pete offered a guaranteed full game to anyone who wanted to play for Marysville. Milne, Langers, Geoff Mckimmie and Wazza, all volunteered. Well done boys!

Marysville came out and kicked the first two goals catching us off guard, (after a quick headcount we were three short). With that sorted, the first quarter panned out fairly even.

Half time saw us with a lead supported by accurate kicking from our forwards. Marysville had a couple of handy on ballers, winning the ball from the centre, peppering the goals, fortunately for us with minor scores. Thanks to Milne, for missing one with the wind.

Our boys taking a twenty one point lead into the last quarter capitalized on every opportunity and kicked us out, to a seven goal victory.

Sixteen goals, eight points, the goal kicking practice is paying off. Marysville finished with seven goals, twenty points, for the day, missing eight shots in the last quarter. John McGough made a great comeback, after a brief stint as a V8 Super car driver, kicking five majors.

John Phillips, Marysville President, sent through an email to our club thanking us for a great day, most importantly acknowledging the spirit in which the game was played. If we take the same commitment and attitude into the rest of the season, we will have both on and off field success. He made mention of the Emerald boys who helped his team out, to ensure a good contest. Langers, who lined up on the wing for Marysville, played a great game and finished up in the Emerald awards. In case you didn’t know JC, he always goes to his left; I think you got that in the end.

Thanks to Walks for running the bar, with Paul, Maso for the running, Tom Gatt, Trainer and all the helpers in the canteen.

Despite the late rain, the fire was roaring, inviting some of the Marysville team to enjoy our hospitality. Flash from Marysville, did mention there was a chance we could be playing them in the snow, when we meet in August, can‟t wait!

Looking forward to our next match against North Croydon, away on the 19th of June, this will let us know where we are at.

Final Score: Emerald 16-8-104 defeated Marysville 7-20-62 Goals: J. McGough 5, D. Stuhldreier 2, P. McLean 2, D. Street 2, M.. Gottschalk 2, J. Campbell 1, D. Kyval 1, J. Cranfield 1 Best Players: J. McGough, P. McLean, J. Campbell, C. Goldrick, G. Stray and R. Hubbard Round 8 Emerald v Seville

Seniors: Report by Steery Top of the table clash, with the winner to go one clear and after Emerald had a one point win in round one at home, Seville on their own turf, was always going to be tough.

Seville started well kicking the first four goals, but Emerald kicked two goals to stay in touch at the first break.

In the second quarter, Emerald fought back to level the score at the long break.

The third quarter was a great tussle, the going from one end to the other, however Seville kicking a late goal to lead by one goal, going into the last quarter.

Emerald came out firing in a very tough, hard, physical contest, with Emerald having most of the play, but Seville making the most of every opportunity.

Emerald hit the front with only minutes to go, only to see Seville kick a goal in the last minute, to win by four points.

Both teams sure to play Finals!

Final Score: Seville 10-7-67 defeated Emerald 9-9-63 Goals: S. Wright 2, S. Kenny 2, B. Kennedy 1, J. Mather 1, J. Taylor 1. M. Cox 1, C. Marsh 1 Best Players: S. Wright, R. Simpson, C. Porter, M. Steer, D. Rout and S. Buhmann

Reserves: Report by J.C. Round 8 and Seville at the Pringle (I hate this ground!)

We were always going to struggle against Seville, with a few injuries and senior players missing, but I felt we could hold our own.

The first quarter opened at a ferocious pace and both sides wouldn’t give an inch. Our backline was under extreme pressure and stood tall and although we lost two midfielders in the first five minutes, by the first break we were in front by two points.

The second quarter started the same and once again thanks largely to the backline, we managed to put some great passages of play together and put Seville’s backline under pressure, but with more injuries, by the long break we finished one goal down.

The third quarter started and we had no bench and no real midfield rotations, so everyone had to suck it up and just run and try to create something.

Ultimately, the tide was turning and with no changes for the midfield or backline, Seville was getting on top. The boys battled hard, but by the end of the term, we were struggling to stop them.

The last quarter was a struggle for us, with half the forward line on one leg and the backline exhausted, Seville ran out with a nine goal win.

Emerald reserves were beaten on the day, but we don’t believe they are better than us, so we look forward to meeting them again at home.

To all the players who fought the game out, I thank them and commend them for their effort.

Final Score: Seville 9-10-64 defeated Emerald 1-6-12 Goals: J. Campbell 1 Best Players: M. Hedger, S. Paull, H. Fitzgerald, C. Bray and D. Atherton

U/18‟s: Report by Sully

The boys came to Seville today, knowing it was going to be our toughest challenge of the year and the boys produced their best performance, to win by four goals.

Jarrod Donders was great up forward and Brody Stephenson kicked six goals.

Final Score: Emerald 10-5-65 defeated Seville 5-11-41 Goals: B. Stephenson 6, B. Miller 1, M. Dompietro 1, J. Donders 1, J. Burns 1 Best Players: J. Donders, J. Burns, A, Thomson, M. Harmer, B. Miller and M. Dompietro

Netball

Round 7 Emerald v Kinglake „A‟ Report by Kim Walker For the first time this season, the ‘A’ grade girls had their full squad to take the court against Kinglake.

They started strong in the first quarter and continued this style of play for the rest of the game.

The defence end were over everything and kept Kinglake's goalers to just ten for the whole game. The attack end dominated their Kinglake opponents, with the goalers shooting seventy goals for the game and the mid court players looking more fluent each week.

It was a strong and disciplined performance, with both these attributes needed to take on Seville this week.

Final Score: Emerald 70 defeated Kinglake 10 Goal Scorers: Megan Whiteroad 44, Brooke Maher 26 Best Players: Samantha Coller, Meagan Baguley, Megan Whiteroad and Elise Borg

„B‟ Report by Elsie Borg The ‘B’ grade girls were ready for a big game, after their first loss for the season, to the top of the ladder, Powelltown.

After training with Kate from inter-league, the girls were ready to step it up.

In the first two quarters the girls maintained a lead, but felt as though they were not playing at their best game. After a motivational chat at half time, the girls pulled together, having a great last half.

With Kate, Rochelle and Lynette, putting up strong defence and the mid court players in Jade, Haylee and Chloe, feeding the goalers, Kylie, Kim and Bev, the girls were unstoppable this week.

After the win, the girls are feeling confident to take on Seville next week.

Final Score: Emerald 44 defeated Kinglake 19 Goal Scorers: Kylie Delmarco 18, Beverly White 14, Kim Walker 12 Best Players: Haylee Steer, Kate Griffin, Kylie Delmarco and Kim Walker „C‟ Report by Dayna Russell

Well done Bombers, what a great TEAM EFFORT!!

It was fantastic to see the girls pull together and work as a team. Their defence all over the court was a stand out.

The girls went into the game, determined to get a win and improve their percentage and it certainly paid off.

It was nice to see the girls put in place, plays, that they have been working on at training. Their talk on the court was positive and they played in the true spirit of the game.

Great job, keep up the good work.

Final Score: Emerald 30 defeated Kinglake 11 Goal Scorers: Sharni Campbell 27, Donna Baguley 2, Teyara Campbell 1 Best Players: Briane Cutting, Cathy Campbell, Megan Appleby and Melanie Jessop

Round 8 Emerald v Seville

„A‟ Report by Rachel Fox Today was the game of the Round, with first and second on the ladder playing. We had put all the hard work in the last couple of weeks at training and it was now time to put it in to action.

Our last encounter was the first game of the season, although we came away with the win, we had a lot to prove to ourselves this time around.

We set up a great first half and were able to come away with a great ten goal win, putting us on the top of the ladder.

Let’s keep up all our hard work girls!

Final Score: Emerald 45 defeated Seville 35 Goal Scorers: Brooke Maher 23, Megan Whiteroad 22 Best Players: Elise Borg, Nic Argoon, Megan Whiteroad and Brooke Maher

„B‟ Report by Elise Borg Round 8 saw Emerald travel to Seville, taking the court with ten girls, which meant that at each quarter fresh legs could take the court, which proved to be helpful in the sunny conditions.

Suffering from a blood nose, a minute before the game in the warm up, Shell once again ran the defence end along side Kate, who are both consistently playing great netball. The mid court, consisting of Haylee, Jade and Chloe, proved to be unstoppable, providing sensational passing into the gaolers and great defensive pressure down the court.

This week also saw the introduction of Kim and Bev, having a run in the mid court, instead of their usual goaling positions. Kylie had her work set out for her, to regain the title of leader of the ‘B’ grade gaolers with the second place player, scoring a whopping two hundred and eighteen goals (218) goals, the previous week. Kylie continued to score accurately all game and added another thirty five (35) goals to her increasing tally.

Lauren Moses, also made her debut in the ‘B’ grade side and proved to be a strong asset, in both the defence and attack end.

At three quarter time, the girls set themselves a challenge to hit the sixty mark, which would be a new personal best for them and just fell short.

Final Score: Emerald 58 defeated Seville 21 Goal Scorers: Kylie Delmarco 35, Kim Walker 9, Lauren Moses 7, Bev White 7 Best Players: Kate Griffin, Rochelle Appleby, Kylie Delmarco and Haylee Steer

„C‟ Report by Cath Campbell

Well done to Seville on a good win, unfortunately Emerald lost to Seville by six goals.

The girls started off really strongly, with great passes and finding nice space on the court. Tara and Meagan were feeding into the ring nicely and the goalers were moving well, to create space and there were some fantastic goals.

Seville stepped up their game in the second and third quarters and their goal shooter barely missed a goal. Incidentally, Emerald dropped their heads and Seville pulled away.

Sharni injured her knee in the third quarter, but made a courageous return to the court in the fourth quarter.

Emerald came back strongly in the last quarter, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to come home with a win.

Final Score: Seville 30 defeated by Emerald 24 Goal Scorers: Sharni Campbell 21, Donna Baguley 2, Teyara Campbell 1 Best Players: Teyara Campbell, Sharni Campbell, Tara Fuller and Dayna Russell
