Created October 2012 / Updated December 2016 2 Guide to the Library Files Montclair Historical Society and photocopies. They pertain to the town of Montclair and its surrounding area.

General history is also included. Montclair’s African American history and the Crane family files make up the largest portions of this collection. There are files on individual members of the Crane family, and several folders dedicated to Crane family genealogy. This collection is limited primarily to organizations, groups, people, etc. Files concerning homes, churches and other buildings in Montclair are also incorporated into this collection.

Arrangement Note The files in this collection are arranged by subject. The staff and volunteers responsible for the processing of this collection felt that this was the most sensible arrangement because the materials are intended for frequent access. The green hanging folders represent a general category. The manila legal-size folders within each hanging folder represent subcategories. For example, the hanging folder entitled “Legal Folder 3” is the third folder for the general “Legal” category. This folder contains a manila folder called

“Indian Deed of 1703,” which is a subcategory. The folders that contain files on specific people are arranged alphabetically. All of the files relating to places are located in File Cabinet 4. The hanging folders containing these files are arranged alphabetically. This collection has been entered by file folder into the Past Perfect database. Corresponding accession numbers are listed on each folder.

Container List This is an inventory of the collection. It includes the file cabinet number, drawer number, the folder title (this corresponds to the green hanging folders mentioned above in the Arrangement Note) and the folder contents (this corresponds to the manila folders within each green hanging folder mentioned above in the Arrangement Note).
