SWSML Bat Regulations – 2011 Season

Summary: In the interest of player safety, starting with the 2011 season the SWSML has adopted the BBCOR certification standard for non-wood bats. As such, all players are encouraged to use either a BBCOR certified bat, or a wood/wood composite bat. That said 2011 will serve as a transition year, and as such a very limited number of non-composite BESR bats will be permitted for use, and only for the 2011 season. Bat regulation specifics are contained below.

Wood & Wood Composite Bat Regulation:  All bats that are constructed of wood or wood composite materials, and are unaltered from original manufacturer’s design are acceptable for use during the 2011 season.

BBCOR Bat Regulation: All BBCOR certified are acceptable for use during the 2011 season provided they conform to the following specifications:

 Conform to a minus-three (-3) length-to-weight ratio  Are unaltered from original manufacturer’s design  Are cylindrical throughout (no flat spots barrel or V-handles)  Are marked with a visible, legible and legitimate (not reproduced or altered) BBCOR logo

BESR Bat Regulation: A limited set of BESR certificated bats are acceptable for use during the 2011 season ONLY if they conform to the following specifications:

 Conform to a minus-three (-3) length-to-weight ratio  Are unaltered from original manufacturer’s design  Are marked with a visible, legible and legitimate (not reproduced or altered) BESR logo  Are non-composite throughout/are constructed of 100% aluminum alloy (no composite material of any kind contained within any part of the bat, regardless of whether the bat states “Composite” on it or not)  Are of single-piece construction (no hybrids, fused handle & barrel)  Are cylindrical throughout (no flat spots or V-handles)

* Pre-season self-inspection: To determine if a particular (-3) BESR bat you own is acceptable for play in 2011 visit the manufacturer’s website and review both the summary section and the specifications sections for your bat. Notwithstanding any of the other requirements, if the word COMPOSITE appears in any part of the description your bat is not acceptable for use in 2011. A partial list of BESR bats that are banned from play is listed below.

Supporting Bat Regulation Rules & Enforcement:

1. Umpires have been instructed to err on the side of safety and as such reserve the exclusive right to ban any bat from use at any time.

2. An Umpire’s ruling on ANY bat is FINAL and is without question. No protests, secondary validation (i.e. request to ask for help from another umpire or league official, etc.) is permitted.

3. An opposing manager, (and only the manager) is permitted to ask the home plate Umpire to validate any bat. In this instance Rule #2 still applies.

4. Umpires reserve the right to eject any manager or player in accordance with league code of conduct rules.

5. A players who uses an illegal bat AND that player’s manager is subject to the following disciplinary action:

o First Violation: . Automatically ruled as an out for that at-bat . Immediate suspension for both player and manager from game . Both player and manager are suspended from team’s next scheduled game

o Subsequent Violation: . Automatically ruled as an out for that at-bat . Immediate suspension for both player and manager from game . Both player and manager are suspended from team’s next scheduled game at minimum . Both player and manager will be subjected to additional disciplinary action as determined by the SWSML Board
