Permanent ponds, temporary pools, flowing waters, and artificial pools were sampled. Most of the species are new records for the island and twenty- nine are new to the Balearic Isles. The families Brachionidae and Lecanidae provide half of the taxa. Keratella procurva (Thorpe, 1912), which is considered a subtropical species, occurred with a widespread distnbution in the island. Different taxa and «Formenkreis» found are mentioned. Original drawings and scanning photomicrographs of some species are presented. During the last eight decades, fewer than 80 publications have dealt specifically with sessile rotifers, while more than 7600 articles have focused on rotifers in general. In this work research on the sessile rotifers with emphasis on the Mexican fauna has been reviewed and some additional information on the new records has been included. Difficulties involved in collection and maintenance of sessile rotifers, as well as problems of identification and quantification have been considered. Published data on the ecology and taxonomy of this group has also been reviewed. There are 35 species of sessile rotifers from three families Atrochidae, Collothecidae, and Flosculariidae, but to that four more species in the planktonic family Conochilidae may be added, as recent molecular research indicates that this family lies within Flosculariidae. -

E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author Abstract In response to a clear gap in knowledge on the biodiversity of sessile Gnesiotrocha rotifers at both global as well as re- gional Southeast Asian scales, we performed a study of free-living colonial and epiphytic rotifers attached to fifteen aquat- ic plant species in Thale Noi Lake, the first Ramsar site in Thailand. We identified 44 different taxa of sessile rotifers, including thirty-nine fixosessile species and three planktonic colonial species. This corresponds with about 40 % of the global sessile rotifer diversity, and is the highest alpha-diversity of the group ever recorded from a single lake. The record further includes a new genus, Lacinularoides n. gen., containing a single species L. coloniensis (Colledge, 1918) n. comb., which is redescribed, and several possibly new species, one of which, Ptygura thalenoiensis n. spec. is formally described here. Ptygura noodti (Koste, 1972) n. comb. is relocated from Floscularia, based on observations of living specimens of this species, formerly known only from preserved, contracted specimens from the Amazon region. -

The plankton and semi-plankton samples collected from four floodplain lakes (beels) of Barpeta district of lower Brahmaputra river basin, Assam state, northeastern India (NEI) revealed eighteen rotifer species of biodiversity and biogeographic interest belonging to five families and six genera. One species is new to the Indian Rotifera and one species is new to Assam. Our collections are characterized by two Australasian elements, five Oriental endemics, seven paleotropical species, and one cosmo (sub) tropical species. Nine species, restricted to date to NEI, are examples of regional distribution importance in India while six species depicted disjunct distribution in the country. Interestingly, seven species are categorized as Eastern hemisphere elements. All the taxa are illustrated to warrant validation as an increasing magnitude of ‘unverifiable records’ is a serious impediment for the progress of rotifer biodiversity in India. Keywords. The distribution records of K. bostoniensis were mainly located in the Nearctic, Neotropic and Western Palearctic regions. After Japan, this is the second record of it in Asia. Trichocerca tenuior and Lepadella triptera have already been recorded in Korea, but the data of two species were insufficient in previous study. Here, we describe the morphological characteristics of the three species and the trophi structures of K. bostoniensis and T. tenuior. This study is the first to characterize the trophi structure of K. bostoniensis, observed using a scanning electron microscope. In addition, we have determined the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and 18S rRNA gene sequences of T. tenuior and L. triptera for their DNA barcodes. The biodiverse Rotifera of northeast India (NEI) revealed 303 species belonging to 53 genera and 24 families; ~96% of these species examined from seven states of NEI affirm the rotifer heterogeneity of our plankton and semi-plank- ton collections. This study documents the record number of species of global and regional biogeographic interest, high- lights affinity with Southeast Asian and Australian faunas, and indicates notable heterogeneity in richness and composition amongst the seven northeastern states. The speciose rotifers of small lentic biotopes of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura, the floodplain lakes beels( ) and small wetlands (dobas and dubies) of the Brahmaputra and the Barak floodplains of Assam, and the floodplain lakes (pats) of Manipur are noteworthy. Deepor Beel and Loktak Lake (two Ramsar sites) are the globally rich rotifer `hotspots’. Interesting assemblages per sample of 80+ species in certain beels and pats, and up to 50 species in dobas and dubies depict the `Rotifera paradox’. -

Hidrobiológica 16 (1): 81-87. ABSTRACT This study examined important aspects of the sexual reproductive biology of the monogonont rotifer Brachionus quadridentatus Hermanns. Observations on the following was made: 1) Morphological description of the male, 2) An analysis of mating behavior, 3) An analysis of female and male life-span at 25oC, and 4) Morphometric characterization of the three types of eggs known in this species and determination of hatching percentages of sexual eggs at 20 and 25oC. SEM photographs of the male are included, the female and parthenogenetic and sexual eggs. Some complementary photographs with the light microscope are also included. The mating behavior of B. quadridentatus is similar to those of other brachionids. Attempted copulations lasted on average 12.4 s, and completed copulations lasted on average 71.4 s. B. quadridentatus is the Brachionus species with the longest duration of copulation recorded so far. -
About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -
