Prior to being named coach of the softball squad in mid-December, Quirindongo spent four seasons playing for the Hunter College Hawks while also serving as an assistant coach at Bronx Leadership High School Academy.

Through her playing and coaching experience, Quirindongo has learned the importance of values such as teamwork, preparation, leadership, and sacrifi ce. Now at Lehman College, she hopes to apply these aspects as a head coach. The opportunity to coach, inspire, and lead student-athletes is an exciting prospect for Quirindongo as she will attempt to lead the Lightning back to respectability.

With an emphasis on recruiting, the former Hawk will hope to improve team numbers while making the softball squad a respectable force in the CUNY Athletic Conference. SHANI ESPINAL ASSISTANT COACH 1ST SEASON Shani Espinal, the only assistant to Head Coach Joanna Quirindongo, has been engaged in sports since the age of eight. She started her athletic endeavors playing little league baseball in Our Lady of Refuge's P.A.L league. She played for a team named the Dodgers, batting second in the lineup and playing second base. Since then, she has become the ultimate competitor, excelling in many of her athletic projects over the years.

Espinal attended DeWitt Clinton High School where she was the center fi elder and team-captain of her team for four seasons. She was also on the gymnastics team for two years and bowling team for four years. During her senior year, Coach Espinal was awarded MVP for both bowling and softball, and she was also awarded All-Around Athlete of the Year.

Following a brilliant high school playing career, Espinal went on to play collegiate softball for the Hunter College Hawks under Head Coach Betsy Hipple. There, she was the starting center fi elder for four seasons and batted second in the lineup. In addition to holding down the center fi eld position at Hunter, Espinal also became a reliable pitcher for Coach Hipple. 2008 SEASON PREVIEW Lehman Softball Team Enters New Era with Pair of New Coaches, 14 New Faces Coming into the 2008 campaign the Lehman Softball team will have a fresh new look that will give the fans hope for a bright future and the Lightning will play with youthful exuberance that will be required this season should Lehman contend for a spot in the CUNYAC playoffs. Last season the squad posted a 14-8 record (6-6 CUNYAC) and fell to John Jay in the CUNYAC Quarterfi nals. This year, only two players (Christy Pasqualicchio and Maria Cruz) return from the 2007 campaign, and 14 fresh faces will be counted on to make an impact.

The Lightning will also have a new coach at the helm as Joanna Quirindongo was hired as the team’s Head Coach during the off-season. Quirindongo’s knowledge and passion for the game is impeccable as she spent her four-year collegiate career at CUNY powerhouse Hunter College where she was a standout player and a 2005 CUNYAC Second-Team All-Star. The former Hawk knows what it takes to win, as Hunter competed for a conference title in all four of her seasons playing for the team. Her intelligence and leadership abilities also were also on display when she spent four years as an assistant coach at Bronx Leadership High School Academy. The Bronx native is excited to come back home and coach the Lehman Lightning softball team, and she is looking forward to the challenge.

“Getting the chance to coach a college team in my hometown of the Bronx is very special to me,” she said. “There are a lot of newcomers on the team, and we’re hoping to develop great team chemistry while staying competitive.”

Joining her staff is Shani Espinal, her teammate and former softball player at Hunter College. Her knowledge of the game will be very benefi cial to the softball program at Lehman College. Her familiarity to the style that Quirindongo plans to implement will be vital for the success of the team this season.

The fi rst player returning for the squad is sophomore outfi elder and ace pitcher Maria Cruz. In her freshman season last year, she was very impressive at the plate leading the Lightning in many offensive categories. Her .472 batting average, as well as her .642 slugging percentage, were team-bests. In addition to her offensive potential, the sophomore sensation and Brooklyn native out of Bushwick High School will also be looked upon to be Lehman’s stopper this season. In addition to Cruz, returnee Christy Pasqualicchio will also looked upon to lead a squad that will have 14 freshman players this season. Pasqualicchio is in her junior season and will provide veteran leadership for the squad.

The 14 freshman players rounding out the roster and providing new energy this season will be infi elders Crissette Maxwell, Rubie Cruz, Marlena Caban, Luz Garcia, Victoria McMahon, Arleni Ulloa, outfi elder Lakeisha Gordon, and utility players Katherine Pena, Catherine Torres, Shante Richardson, Sadi Mendoza, Christina Del Valle and Jimbelyn Batista. These freshmen will have the opportunity to learn and mature as players for the squad and Coach Quirindongo is very eager to see what these players will bring to the table.

“I’m very eager to see what these ladies will contribute to the squad this season and their willingness to learn and understand the game of softball will be something that I’m excited to teach them,” she said.

The schedule for the Lightning this season will present a lot of challenges as the team will face some tough non-conference opponents including USMMA, St. Joseph’s College (BK) and St. Joseph’s College (LI). As always, Lehman will play many games against the polished CUNY Conference opponents such as Staten Island and Baruch. An interesting and anticipated day will be March 29 when Coach Qurindongo will head to her old stomping grounds as she will lead her young Lehman squad as they battle Hunter College.

As the 2008 season approaches, one thing is for certain: The Lightning will bring a new attitude to the fi eld, one that will see them give 100 percent to each contest they participate in. Although the team will be in a transitional period, the foundation of youth is being set for the softball program and Quirindongo is a good candidate to lead the Lightning into a new era.
