George Watt Fenneman November 10, — May 29, was an You Bet Your Life radio and television announcer. Fenneman was born in Peking now You Bet Your LifeChinathe only child of American parents in the import-export business. He was nine months old when his parents moved to San FranciscoCaliforniawhere he grew up. In he graduated from San Francisco State College with a degree in speech and drama, and took a job as an announcer with a local radio station. During the Second World War he worked as a broadcast correspondent for You Bet Your Life U. Office of War Information. In he moved to Los Angeles and resumed his radio career. Fenneman's mellifluous voice, clean-cut good looks, You Bet Your Life gentlemanly manner provided the ideal foil for Marx's You Bet Your Life antics and bawdy ad libs. Fenneman was a resilient target of Marx's frequent mispronunciations of his name "Feminine" and other light-hearted teasing. Groucho called him the perfect straight man. Fenneman remained friends with Marx until the latter's death in Fenneman was one of a pair of announcers on Dragnet ; he shared narration duties with Hal Gibney on radio and the original Dragnet television seriesand then with John Stephenson when Dragnet returned to TV in It was Fenneman's voice You Bet Your Life announced, "The story you are about to see is true. The idea was the same as it later was with You Bet Your Life Cosby : to invite people on and have an unrehearsed You Bet Your Life with them. Groucho could always be counted on to enliven the banter with his unique blend of comedy and wit. After talking with Groucho for several minutes, the contestants chose quiz questions from a category they had preselected and, if they answered them correctly, won money.
