THE MYSTERY OF JESUS Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman with a Hemorrhage The Sandwich • Healing of two females, both in the state of being unclean

• Jairus, a synagogue official asks healing for his daughter, who was 12 years old

• On his way, a woman suffering with hemorrhages for 12 years, came to touch his cloak and was healed

• Jairus asks for his daughter, the woman reaches out on her own

Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman with a Hemorrhage The Woman with a Hemorrhage is a woman who is menstruating.

Menstruating woman were considered unclean and could not be a part of the temple gathering

Jesus does not know who touched him, he just felt that power had come out of him

Her healing is physical and spiritual. She felted cured and her faith was affirmed

This delays Jesus so he does not get to the girl on time

Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman with a Hemorrhage • They cross to the other side of the sea – Back to Jewish area.

• Jairus comes and requests a healing • After the healing of the woman, officials come to say his daughter has died.

• Note the awkward language vs 36-41

• Jesus telling her to rise, is another connection to Jesus’ own resurrection

It is all about those who recognize Jesus and those who do not.

THE MYSTERY OF JESUS Jesus returns to Nazareth

Jesus goes into the synagogue on the Sabbath. Many are astonished with what Jesus said. The people are questioning who Jesus is. Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands? Don’t we know his family?

They took offense at him. He was too familiar.

He was not able to do any mighty deeds there.

Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus calls the 12 and sends them out two by two

He explains how to deal with rejection. Shake the dust off your feet and move on.

As everyone is trying to figure out who Jesus is, we hear King Herod’s ideas.

Herod thinks Jesus is John the Baptist whom he beheaded.

Flashback – What happened to John the Baptist?

He was imprisoned because he challenged Herod who married his brother’s wife, .

Herodias wanted John dead. Herod feared John, loved to hear him preach.

On Herod’s birthday, Herodias’ daughter danced for the king. He promised her anything.

Herodias had her daughter ask for the head of John the Baptist.

What happens to John foreshadows what will happen to Jesus.

John speaks the truth to power.

Story of vengeful hatred, chance opportunity, filial devotion, And weakness.

Note the actions and weakness of Herod = the actions and weakness of Pilate. Satisfying the crowd.

• It seems as though no time as passed. • The separation between the sending and returning is the flashback to John. • The disciples returned and reported to Jesus all that they had done. • Jesus wants them to go away with him to a deserted place to rest • The people are pressing upon him and so have no opportunities for time alone.

• Jesus sees the crowds and his heart was moved with pity. They seemed lost, without a shepherd. • Reflects the nurturing aspect of God • Jesus has concern with food: 1. After healing states to give her something to eat 2. Fasting laws

• Jesus dismissed the crowds • Had his disciples get into a boat • He went alone UP A MOUNTAIN to pray

The boat was tossed around by the waves • Jesus was alone on the shore • He saw they were being tossed about • 4th watch of the night (after 3:00 AM) Harkens back to the • ????“He meant to pass by them”???? calming of the sea in chapter 4 They saw him, were terrified, Jesus got into the boat, the wind died down They were astounded and did not understand

• Why did he want to pass by them? • They saw him but thought it was a ghost and cried out. What did they cry out? • They saw him and were terrified. At the storm,? at the ghost? • They were astounded. Because it was Jesus? Because the wind died down? • They had not understood the loaves. What does that have to do with the walking on water? • Why were their hearts hardened? Mark stated earlier that the Pharisees had this when he healed the man with the withered hand. Now them. They were sent out on mission with joy and now they do not understand.

• The disciples cannot understand who Jesus is and the significance of the feeding of the 5,000 but the people do.

• The chapter began with Jesus not being recognized in Nazareth to the end of the chapter with him being sought out in Gennesaret.

Pharisees and Scribes gathered around Jesus.

Mark explains a Jewish custom. Washing of items before use

Jesus calls them hypocrites. They disregard God’s commandment and cling to their own traditions.

Nullifying the word of God and its challenge by coming up with loopholes.

God said, Honor your father and mother

If your gift is qorban, you do not need to care for your parents and so nullify the word of God.

Defilement in God’s eyes comes from inside List of evils not outside. They honor God with their lips Evil thoughts unchastity, and not with their heart. Jesus when to the pagan or unclean area of Tyre He is speaking with a pagan woman Jews would have found this shocking

The children are the children of Israel Dogs were insulting words from Jews toward Gentiles

Jesus sees the priority of the Jews over the Gentiles but he does move toward opening the ministry to all.

Jesus heals the deaf man and removed his speech impediment. He used spit and touched his tongue.

He was ordered to tell no one but the more he ordered it, the more he proclaimed it.

They were astonished and said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.

Jesus is opening up people to hearing the word of God and speaking it.

The disciples misunderstand Jesus and why he tells them to watch out and guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod (puffery, pride).

Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are you hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear?

Jesus is not talking about bread, he can make bread.

Jesus put spittle on his eyes and laid hands on him

Jesus asks, “Do you see anything?”

The blind man sees people looking like trees and walking.

Laid hands a second time and his sight was restored.

Jesus asks who do people say that he is.

He asks them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Peter says to him, “You are the Messiah.”

Then he warned them not to tell anyone.

Most know Matthew’s version (16:16)

Jesus starts to talk about his upcoming suffering.

Peter rebukes Jesus

Jesus rebukes Peter, “Get behind me, . You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

They had no concept of a suffering Messiah.

Those who are to follow him must deny themselves, pick up their cross and follow him.

Why gain the whole world and lose yourself? What can one give in exchange of one’s life?

Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes into his Father’s glory.
