Call to Worship

I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

~ Psalm 40:1-3 (ESV)

C onfession of Sin

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

~from The Worship Sourcebook

Remembering the Gospel

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. 19 He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

~Micah 7:18-19 (ESV)

Hymn – In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found, There in the ground His body lay He is my light, my strength, my song; Light of the world by darkness slain: this Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Then bursting forth in glorious Day firm through the fiercest drought and storm.. Up from the grave he rose again! What heights of love, And as He stands in victory what depths of peace, Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, when fears are stilled, For I am His and He is mine when strivings cease! Bought with the precious blood of My Comforter, my All in All, Christ. here in the love of Christ I stand. No guilt in life, no fear in death, In Christ alone! who took on flesh This is the power of Christ in me; Fullness of God in helpless babe! From life's first cry to final breath. This gift of love and righteousness Jesus commands my destiny. Scorned by the ones he came to save: No power of , no scheme of man, Till on that cross as Jesus died, Can ever pluck me from His hand; The wrath of God was satisfied Till He returns or calls me home, For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the power of Christ I'll stand. Here in the death of Christ I live.

Scripture Reading

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. ~Mark 3:1-6 (ESV)

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. ~Ephesians 4:26-27

The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult. ~Proverbs 12:16

Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly. ~Proverbs 14:29

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. ~Proverbs 15:1

A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention. ~Proverbs 15:18

Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. ~Proverbs 16:32

Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. ~Proverbs 19:11

Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.” ~Proverbs 24:29

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, 22 for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you. ~Proverbs 25:21-22

Scoffers set a city aflame, but the wise turn away wrath. ~Proverbs 29:8

A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back. ~Proverbs 29:11

A man of wrath stirs up strife, and one given to anger causes much transgression. ~Proverbs 29:22

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? ~James 3:16-4:12

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

~Psalm 23

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. ~Psalm 103:8-10

11 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. ~John 3:16-17

Hymn – Nothing But The Blood

What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! Precious is the flow That makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; For my cleansing, this my plea, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! Precious is the flow That makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone, Nothing but the blood of Jesus Naught of good that I have done, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! Precious is the flow That makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; This is all my righteousness, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! Precious is the flow That makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
