Most significant centre-right conservative-liberal political party in Romania. Re-founded in 1990 after the Romanian revolution, it presents itself as the first formally constituted political party in the country and the oldest in the family of European liberal parties. Until 2014, the PNL had been a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). The party statutes adopted in June 2014 dropped any reference to international affiliation, consequently most of its MEPs joined the European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament.

Irish nationalist party that long was widely regarded as the political wing of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), though from at least the 1990s both organisations emphasised their separateness. Organised in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, Sinn Féin strives for an end to the political partition of the island of Ireland, embodying an ideology that is variously characterised as nationalism and Republicanism. Sinn Féin advocates democratic socialism, but some observers question the accuracy of its frequent portrayal as a party of the radical left. (Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica)

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is currently the junior partner in the government's ruling "grand coalition" of conservative Christian Democrats and Social Democrats. The SPD favours the transition to a low-carbon economy. It sees highly efficient coal and gas stations as bridge-building technologies until energy demand can be fully satisfied by renewables. Costs for the transformation of the energy system have to be shared evenly between consumers.

The Free Democrats are Germany's liberal, market-oriented party. Although the party was not elected to federal parliament in 2013 for the first time in post-war history, it still holds political sway, especially in some state politics. The FDP wants to integrate the increasing amount of renewable energy into a market-based system. They want more efforts in the area of energy efficiency. All-in-all, they would like to see a re-boot of the energy transition to make it cheaper and to bring it in sync with grid expansion.

The Left Party currently makes up part of the opposition in the German federal parliament. They advocate decentralised energy production and distribution and a 100 percent renewable energy sector by 2050. Costs of the energy transition should be distributed broadly to relieve households. Grids and utilities should become public enterprises and electricity as a common good should not be traded on the exchange or used to make profits.
