Stamkos & Vasilevskiy Pace Lightning's Rout of Islanders ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 2021 SPORTS 14 Maharaj shines SAfrica seal series ‘win’ over Windies GROS ISLET, St. Lucia, June 22, (AP): Keshav Maharaj took a hat trick in his 5-36 to lead South Africa to a 158-run win over West Indies in the second test and a 2-0 series sweep. Maharaj became just the second South African and fi rst in more than 60 years to take a test hat trick when he dismissed Kieran Powell, Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva in the second-to-last over before lunch on the fourth day. West Indies was already under pres- sure after fast bowler Kagiso Rabada’s three wickets at the top of the order. But Maharaj hurried the home team’s demise in St. Lucia as it was all out for 165 before tea on the fourth day, well off the target of 324 set by South Africa. CRICKET Maharaj also wrapped it up when Jayden Seales was caught out on the square leg boundary to give the left- arm spinner his fi fth. Roston Chase wasn’t able to take his place at No. 4 because of a leg injury, meaning West Indies had only nine batsmen. Maharaj’s three in three balls started with a key breakthrough when Powell holed out at square leg for 51. Maharaj added the wickets of Holder and Da Silva, with Wiaan Mulder’s low one-handed catch down to his right at leg slip sealing the hat trick. It sent Maharaj running and sliding, soccer-style, on his chest on the grass in celebration. The only previous South African to take a hat trick in tests was Geoff Grif- fi n against England at Lord’s in 1960. West Indies started the day 15-0 but lost captain Kraigg Brathwaite (6) and Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Pat Maroon (14) and New York Islanders left wing Matt Martin (17) battle for possession of the puck during the fi rst period in Game 5 of an NHL hockey Stanley Shai Hope (2) quickly to the pace of Cup semifi nal playoff series, on June 21, in Tampa, Fla. NHL MORNING SKATE: STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS EDITION – JUNE 22, 2021 THREE HARD LAPS * The Lightning matched a franchise playoff record with eight goals to claim an 8-0 victory on home ice and move within one win of their second straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. * Brayden Point became the second player in NHL history – and first in 45 years – to post an eight-game goal streak in one postseason, following Reggie Leach who had a 10-game run with the Flyers in 1976. * After three straight one-goal games, including back-to-back overtime contests, the Golden Knights and Canadiens will square off for a 3-2 series lead tonight in Las Vegas. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 24, 2021 LIGHTNING, ISLANDERS VIE FOR STANLEY CUP FINAL BERTH IN GAME 7 SHOWDOWN FRIDAY NEW YORK (June 24, 2021) -- The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders will decide their Stanley Cup Semifinals series Friday night when they take to the ice at AMALIE Arena in Tampa for a winner-take-all Game 7 (8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS). The teams will be vying for a berth in the Stanley Cup Final against the winner of the other Semifinals series between the Vegas Golden Knights and Montreal Canadiens. The Lightning will be skating in their ninth Game 7 in franchise history (5-3) and for the sixth time in the final-four round (2-3). Only three other clubs – all from the Original Six – have played as many such contests in the Semifinals: the Boston Bruins (8 GP; 4-4), Detroit Red Wings (6 GP; 5-1) and Chicago Blackhawks (6 GP; 3-3). Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh has made a team-high eight career appearances in a Game 7 (6-2), one of 10 active players with at least six career Game 7 wins. McDonagh is attempting to join two active NHL players with seven-or-more such wins: Carl Hagelin (8-2) and Anton Stralman (7-2). Other players on the Lightning roster with at least five previous Game 7s are defenseman Victor Hedman (3-3) and forwards Steven Stamkos (3-3) and Pat Maroon (2-3). The Islanders, who blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 in Game 7 in the Second Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, are competing in a Game 7 in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history.
