When I was growing up, my father would take us to get fresh hot doughnuts from Krispy Kreme every Sunday. The cake doughnuts, covered in peanuts or dipped in sprin- kles, were always my favorite. And to this day, I crave cake doughnuts. Fast forward 20 years to the time when both my sister and I lived in the same New York neighborhood. There was a fantastic bakery nearby where the counters were piled high with zucchini bread, apple walnut muffins, whoopie pies. As a cook myself, I loved the setup as much as the pastries. It was an open commissary kitchen with a walk-up coun- ter for ordering. As you waited in line, you could watch the bakers make all manner of homespun baked goods. Among the array of delicious- ness displayed on the counter was what looked like a mini muffin coated in cinnamon and sugar. BY KEVIN MCDONOUGH A prominent family with po- litical ambitions finds itself linked to an infamous crime. Wasn’t that the plot to ABC’s just-canceled “The Family”? It also describes “American Gothic” (10 p.m., CBS, TV-14), a much worse show in almost every way imaginable. We’re supposed to believe that somebody in this very fa- mous clan is actually linked to or may be the notorious “Silver Bell Killer.” And that he or she actually kept evidence, clip- pings and a box of silver bells tucked away in the garage. Since so many secrets are ba- sically given away in the pilot, the series will milk tension and drama from the lengths family members will go to protect their reputations and perhaps even their very lives from the possible killer(s) in their imme- diate gene pool. Look for Virginia Madsen as the icy matriarch capable of just about anything. In addition to being pretty obvious and spectacularly un- original, the story includes a disturbed child who may be a chip off the old serial killing block.
