KAYE Daniel Kwabena Amponsah, known professionally as Koo Nimo, was bom on October 3, 1934 in Ofoase, a village near Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti Region of modem Ghana. His mother, Akua Forkuo, was a farmer, cloth trader, homemaker, and a chorister at the local Methodist church. His father, Kwame Amponsah, was a farmer, tailor, mason, and musical amateur who played the trumpet in the Ofoase brass band. 1 During his childhood in Ofoase, young Kwabena was exposed to a mix of musical styles characteristic to Akan-speaking villages in the Gold Coast colony during the 1930s.1 2 He played the asratoa, a pair of plum-sized gourd rattles attached to a string, with which Ghanaian children practice intricate rhythmic patterns.3 He made his own drums by fixing rubber over Koo Nimo and the Kumasi Adadam Trio, old tin cans.. He enjoyed the rhythms of c. 1969. The subtle tonalities of the Asante-Twi language and the harmonies of indigenous song deeply impressed Kwabena. His maternal grandmother sang indigenous songs in a “modal, moody, bending” style. His mother often sang abibindwom, vernacular Christian poetry set to indigenous melodies, at home and in church. Asante-Twi is one of the main dialects of the Akan peoples, and this was the predominant language spoken in Ofoase. “Ashanti” is the British spelling of Asante, and it is still used to designate the province in central Ghana. On the Akan, cf. Fynn 1982. 3 This is still practiced by children in Ghana, but apparently less commonly than in the past (Nketia 1963:4). 148 JOURNAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF AFRICAN MUSIC He loved listening to the telling of Ananse-the-spider tales (.Anansesem) by village elders, which were interspersed with story songs (mmoguo) that he would commit to memory.4 sang traditional Akan dirges. More than thirty years of British rule and other influences arising from the region's long history of foreign trade had resulted, especially since the late 19th century, in the introduction of new musical instruments and styles, and the development of new musical genres in the Ghanaian regions. At the age of six, Kwabena was given lessons on the harmonium, and he soon played it to accompany hymn singing at Sunday church services. He was taught English at the local school, and learned English-language school songs. Further exposure to Western instruments came from his older brother Paul, who played the harmonica and Nana Kwabena Tenten, another villager, who performed popular asiko songs to his own accompaniment on the accordion, with rhythm provided by a carpenter’s saw. 5 The Ofoase brass band, in which his father played trumpet, had a repertory of popular highlife tunes and British airs. In 1942, Kwabena’s older sister married a member of the Asante royal family and went to live in Kumasi.6 In that year, Kwabena also moved to Kumasi where, by living in the bosom of Asante royalty, he came to appreciate diverse courtly musical genres. He recalls the “impressive atmosphere and environment of the palace, the paraphernalia of the Asantehene in state”: “All the chiefs canle to take their position, and everyone knew their proper position - the chiefs, the drummers, the musketeers, the horn players, the bearers of the towering umbrellas. It was a great display of organization and discipline.” 7 Kwabena was fascinated with the court linguists and their language (ahenfle kasa), rich in euphemisms and proverbs. He attuned himself to the language of the court drums and ivory horns (ntahera) that rang out appellations to the Asante king (Asantehene). He was also impressed by the inspirational songs of the court minstrels (kwadwomfoo), laden with proverbs, history, and praise for the Asantehene and Queen Mother.8 He later described his upbringing in the Manhyia by saying, “I was irradiated with tradition.” Kwabena was sent to the Kumasi Presbyterian Middle School where the Western- style education included further training in English language and study of Western music. At the same time, through access to his brother-in-law’s gramophone player, he delved into a variety of popular musical styles coming out of Britain, the United States, and the Caribbean, including Cuban musicians, the Sexteto Habanero and Don Azpiazu, and recordings by Bing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington from the USA. In 1948, he was sent to Adisadel College, a prestigious boarding school in Cape Coast, where he spent four years receiving a British-style education Here he sang in the church choir and played Protestant hymns and selections from Bach and Mendelssohn on the organ at Sunday church services. He took piano lessons and practiced music from the repertory of Western classical and popular music. He also played keyboards in the student highlife dance band. He was fond of swing and jazz, and dreamed of becoming a jazz pianist. Soon, however, his musical interests turned to the guitar, which was a popular instrument among the students at Adisadel, and also well-liked in the coastal Fante region around Cape Coast. The guitar was becoming a musical instrument of importance in Ghana, and in sub-Saharan Africa generally in the first half of the 20th century (cf. Kaye 1998). In the period between the 1920s and 1940s, in both rural and urban styles, an increasing number of recordings by Akan musicians were featuring the guitar as the main accompaniment instrument to singing, alongside the percussion. One of the rural idioms was the odonson, which derived from traditions of seperewa (harp-lute) playing. The urban guitar bands of the 1940s and 1950s also played odonson, but they were coming to concentrate increasingly on highlife and related popular styles. Kwabena Amponsah bought his first guitar, a Gallotone from South Africa, on a school vacation in Kumasi. He soon began to study local guitar styles with friends and local guitarists in Cape Coast. During visits to Kumasi, he would spend hours at the gramophone stands at Kejetia lorry park, where he could listen to recordings of guitar-accompanied Akan songs by the Kumasi Trio, Akwasi Manu, Sam, Kwamin, and Ofori Pening. “This was my real academy”, Koo Nimo has said of Kejetia, “I listened to every musician at that time.” 9 One of the first guitar patterns he learned was called “caterpillar walking”, which is actually a form of dagomba, one of the popular coastal West African guitar idioms, known from Sierra Leone to Nigeria. (Ex. I) 10 The dagomba style is performed on a single six-stringed guitar, tuned in the common manner (E-A-d-g-b-e'). Its harmonies are usually based on a seven tone diatonic scale in a Western ‘major’ key such as F, G, E, or C, and emphasize two chords, the tonic major (I), and the dominant seventh (V7). The meter is 4/4, with a relatively fast tempo, in the range of 116 - 136 beats per minute. The melody consists of a 4-beat cyclical pattern that 9 Koo Nimo, interview by the author, 28 December 1988. Kejetia, like any transportation terminal at the present, was a convenient location for selling music. In 1989, music (cassette tape) stands still dotted Kejetia lorry park. “ Collins suggests that the dagomba originated with Liberian sailors (Collins 1985:1-2). Quarter note (crotchet) = 124 Much of the subtlety of this style derives from the rhythmic and melodic variations that emerge from the intricate right-hand thumb and forefinger plucking style.

Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below).

This difference can be attributed partly to the advancement of recording technology, a shift from shellac to vinyl records as well as the advent of multi-track tape recorders in Ghana. The 1970s had a unique highlife sound that can be situated within and explained by the socio-cultural context of recording approaches embraced by studio engineers. This paper inves- tigates the technological approaches to the production of highlife songs at the Ghana Film Studio (GFS) and how they reshaped the highlife soundscape in the 1970s. It also draws attention to the influence of Francis Kwakye, the then resident recording engineer of GFS as a case study to explore highlife sound on records within this period. Employing document review, audio review, observations and interview for data collection, the paper reveals that the engineering techniques and tools employed on the recordings were socio-culturally influenced and constructed to resonate with the Ghanaian identity of the time.

Reviewed by Angela Anima-Korang Southern Illinois University Carbondale Ghana’s music industry can be described as a thriving one, much like its film industry. The West African sovereign state is well on its way to becoming a force to reckon with on the international music market. With such contemporary rap artists as Sarkodie, Fuse ODG (Azonto), Reggie Rockstone, R2Bs, and Edem in its fold, Ghana’s music is transcending borders and penetrating international markets. Historically, Ghana’s varying ethnic groups, as well as its interaction with countries on the continent, greatly influences the genres of music that the country has created over the years. Traditionally, Ghana’s music is geographically categorized by the types of musical instruments used: Music originating from the North uses stringed instruments and high-pitched voices; and music emanating from the Coast features drums and relatively low-pitched voice intermissions. Up until the 1990s, “highlife” was the most popular form of music in Ghana, borrowing from jazz, swing, rock, soukous, and mostly music to which the colonizers had listened. Highlife switched from the traditional form with drums to a music genre characterized by the electric guitar. “Burger-highlife” then erupted as a form of highlife generated by artists who had settled out of Ghana (primarily in Germany), but who still felt connected to the motherland through music, such as Ben Brako, George Darko, and Pat Thomas.

Thus the state support of popular as well as traditional and western type art/religious music sectors by the pioneering leaders Nkrumah, Nyere, Sekou Toure, President Keita. Their approach can therefore be considered as tri-musical B) The failure of this tri-musical approach being transmitted into the Ghanaian tertiary education system. This became rather bi-musical; i.e. the training of students only in traditional African and imported western art idioms C) Some reasons for this intellectual university hostility to popular music/culture 1) imported elitist, Marxist and Frankfurt School ideas concerning the ephemeral, frivolous, low status and inconsequential nature (cf. high art) of popular music and performance. 2) Residual African traditional attitudes towards professional musicians. Low regard and apprehension of such indigenous professional traditional groups as West African jalis/griots, praise drummers and goje players D) The negative consequences of the narrow bi-musical approach has effected both the university students and the evolution of local musical forms such as highlife music and the concert party. It fosters elitist attitudes by students who do not consider the creative role of the masses and intermediate classes important in musical development. It has in a lack of intellectual input into local popular music: few books and biographies on the topic, no intellectual input into it.

This study examines the Igbo popular musical Tagging genre in Nigeria through its creative forms (highlife and other Periodized hybridized forms), exhibited within the period from 1960 up to the present. The main objective of this study is to capture all musical Hybridized typologies within the period stipulated and tag them, using socio- cultural parameters, such as language, age, group philosophy, musical form, etc. It adopted descriptive and socio-musicological approaches in evaluating the musical trends through periodized format and also using the socio tagging system as its conceptual framework. The following musical typologies (Égwú Nñùtá, Égwú Ìkwǫkìlìkwǫ, Ēgwū O ̣̀gbàrà-o ̣̄fūù, and Égwú A gwàrà ǫgwa) were, however, discovered and tagged appropriately in the course of the study for easy reference, recognition, and for ethnic identity.     1 FALL 2021 MUN 1xxx - section TBA World Music Ensemble – African Popular Music Ensemble Tuesdays (7:20 PM-9:10 PM) at the School of Music Dr. Sarah Politz, [email protected] Office: Yon Hall 435 Office hours: TBA Credits: 1.0 credit hours The African Popular Music Ensemble will specialize in the popular music of the African continent, with a special focus on Afrobeat, highlife, soukous, African jazz, and the brass band traditions of Africa and the diaspora. Together we will listen to, perform, and arrange music from the works of Fela Kuti (Nigeria), Salif Keita (Mali), Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba (South Africa), Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), and the Gangbe Brass Band of Benin. Instrumentation will vary based on personnel each semester, and will typically include a rhythm section, horn section, and vocal soloists. The ensemble will also draw on the participation of faculty performers, as well as guest artists specializing in African popular music from the community and beyond. These collaborations will contribute to the diversity of musical and cultural experiences related to Africa that are available to students throughout the semester. Course Objectives The African Popular Music Ensemble is dedicated to learning African culture through musical performance. After completion of this course, students will be able to perform in a variety of African popular music styles on their instrument. These skills will be developed through a combination of listening to recordings, developing skills in listening and blending within the ensemble, and individual study and practice outside of rehearsals. Students who wish to develop their skills in improvisation will have many opportunities to do so.
