MCA Annual Report 2012 2 Letter from the Chair

Mary Ittelson Chair of the Board of Trustees

During my four years as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I have witnessed many impressive achievements and changes at the Museum of Contemporary Art . Under Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsztejn’s leadership, MCA Chicago has assembled a team that is the envy of many arts organizations. The museum’s Vision—to foster an artist-focused and audience-engaged forum for contemporary art—continues to develop and transform the institution, bringing artists and audiences ever closer together to enrich the civic with the creative. We are honored by Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson’s extraordinary $10 million gift to support this new convergent programming. Stefan and Gael have been among the most generous supporters in the MCA’s history. Their gift is an affirmation of the quality of multidisciplinary programming at the MCA and ensures that it will continue to flourish in the theater and throughout the museum. In recognition of their spectacular contribution, the museum’s performance space—the locus of innovative music, theater, and dance—has been renamed the Edlis Neeson Theater. Additionally, we are deeply grateful to Penny Pritzker and Bryan Traubert for their remarkable gift, which supports the Pritzker Traubert Collection Exhibition Fund and the Pritzker Traubert Visionary Acquisition Fund. Throughout my tenure at the MCA, I have been most proud of the launch of the Dialogue, an annual forum for transparent debate on issues of diversity and inclusion, presented in association with the MCA’s Audience

Development and Diversity Committee. This past fall, the fourth incarnation of this event focused on how Millennials—the generation born between 1980 and the early 1990s—have changed the way we experience . . . everything. Our illustrious Dialogue panel included YouTube’s most subscribed-to art theorist, Hennessy Youngman; Chicago’s Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, Michelle T. Boone; and our newest curator, Naomi Beckwith, formerly of the Studio Museum in Harlem. Together, we explored ways to rethink not only who and what we present but also the very ideologies that underlie how we collect, present, and interpret our contemporary world. Art and performance fused to create an extraordinary experience at artEdge 2012. Nick Cave’s special soundsuit performance wowed the crowd, and funk innovator George Clinton’s incredible concert capped a remarkable evening. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Amy Rule graciously served as honorary cochairs. Through the extraordinary work of event chairs Liza and Marc Brooks, Anne and Don Edwards, Penny Pritzker and Bryan Traubert, and the MCA’s dedicated staff, the museum raised $900,000. I heartily welcome the following new trustees: Leslie Bluhm, Elissa Efroymson, Brenda Fleissner, Jay Franke, Michael O’Grady, and Naomi Reese. Sadly, we also said goodbye to life trustee Richard Lenon, who passed away in the fall. Dick served on the Collection and Exhibition Committees and was keen to take part in museum events. An MCA educa- tion classroom has been named in his and his late wife Helen’s honor. We are most grateful to receive a painting by Richard Hunt as a gift from his estate, as well as a generous bequest. As my board chair tenure comes to an end, I welcome King Harris to this rewarding position. King has had a tremendous impact on the museum since becoming an MCA board member in 1979. In addition to his long- standing service on the board, his involvement with the MCA extends to the Harris Family Foundation’s generous endowed fund for exhibitions, which has provided ongoing support to the museum’s exhibition program since 2007. I anticipate a venerable future for the museum, and I look forward to

seeing how Madeleine and her staff—as well as the museum’s vast team of trustees, donors, and members—implement the museum’s Vision to further define MCA Chicago as a cultural leader in the twenty-first century.

Contemporary art owes much of its allure to its hybrid nature. Artists draw on various media and divergent perspectives to create new expressions, and their audiences have new means by which to share their reactions instantly. Likewise, some of MCA Chicago’s most interesting work happens when we erase the conventional boundaries among exhibitions, collections, performance, and educational programs. I wish to reiterate Mary Ittelson’s gratitude to the early supporters of our new Vision—in particular Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson, Penny Pritzker and Bryan Traubert, Helen and Sam Zell, Sylvia Neil and Daniel Fischel, and Marilyn and Larry Fields. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Mary as well. Their generosity helps our Vision for the museum become a reality. Mark Handforth’s successful exhibition, which launched the outdoor exhibition series on our plaza and landed us a Chicago Sun-Times cover story, was preeminent among our pilot projects in convergent program- ming. We held a community block party at which visitors posed for photos with Handforth’s sculptures and posted them on Flickr and Facebook. The MCA building and plaza were activated by this exhibition, extending our programming into the public arena at any time of day or night. This initiative is critical to our civic identity and outreach. It signals to Chicagoans that the MCA is integral to the larger community and identifies the MCA, literally and figuratively, as an unmistakably contemporary art museum. Turner Prize–winning artist Martin Creed brought an inventive

multidisciplinary approach to the MCA’s second yearlong artist’s residency. This audience-engagement initiative redefines what a residency can accomplish and explores new ways to intertwine artist, audience, and museum. Creed’s interventions transcended the traditional confines of the galleries, activating the entire MCA building, and extending onto our plaza and into the city. Equally bold programs included dance artists Eiko & Koma’s performance of Naked in the galleries during their exhibition Time Is Not Even, Space Is Not Empty; the performance red, black and GREEN: a blues, a collaboration between performer-poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph and artist Theaster Gates in which the stage set doubled as an exhibition; and Sonic Events, a performance by sculptor and instrument-maker Ian Schneller and composer/violinist Andrew Bird, in which seventy-five plant-shaped audio horn speakers created a literal symphonic field for visitors to walk through and explore. The exhibition This Will Have Been: Art, Love and Politics in the 1980s garnered critical praise and a gratifying buzz in the art community. StreetWise dedicated an entire issue to the 1980s, and the show received a cover story in the , as well as generous attention from Time magazine, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and Time Out Chicago. The catalogue we produced to accompany the exhibition was recognized as one of 2012’s 50 best book designs in the 50 Books/50 Covers competition held by Design Observer, the AIGA and Designers & Books. We are pleased that the show traveled to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and then to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. The 1980s exhibition was inspired by signature works in the MCA Collection. In the same vein, the MCA Vision renewed our focus on our own holdings by devoting half of the museum’s main floor to rotating thematic shows drawn primarily from our collection, including The Language of Less and Phantom Limb: Approaches to Painting Today, both of which were conceived and curated by James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator Michael Darling. We also welcomed Dieter Roelstraete to our curatorial team as Manilow Senior Curator. Dieter came to us from the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp in Belgium, where he organized large-scale group exhibitions and

monographic shows. This fall also marked the launch of the MCA’s Teen Creative Agency (TCA), a rigorous program that helps young men and women understand themselves and their world through contemporary art. TCA members strengthened their critical and interpretive skills as they worked with the MCA’s development, communications, design, and director’s departments to learn how museum programs come together. They also collaborated with Marc Bamuthi Joseph on his multimedia SHareOUT, and assisted artist Cauleen Smith during the performance that kicked off her exhibition. We are all extremely proud of what they have accomplished and welcome them as members of the MCA team. The MCA comprises not only the exceptionally dedicated individuals who serve on our staff and board of trustees, but, more to the point, everyone who joins us in celebrating all that contemporary art makes pos- sible—artistic activity, compelling experiences, and meaningful dialogue.

The 2012 fiscal year inaugurated a new approach to programming in the MCA Chicago building. We strove to clarify and regularize the types of exhibitions displayed in our galleries so that visitors could learn to expect certain things in certain parts of the building, and to maximize the effective- ness of our spaces. For instance, starting with Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks as the inaugural show, we now devote one side of our large, second-floor galleries to solo exhibitions of artists who are just starting to gain wider prominence. Also, we transitioned from monthly exhibitions of Chicago artists, as had been the practice for ten years under the banner of UBS 12 x 12, to larger exhibitions of Chicago artists, which have longer life spans and have been rechristened BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works exhibitions. MCA Screen was another new initiative launched this year to present exciting new film and video works in a fixed location on the fourth floor. Each of these changes helps us renew our commitment to the MCA’s permanent collection by presenting exhibitions large and small throughout the museum’s yearlong programming. During this fiscal year we began our second artist’s residency with Martin Creed Plays Chicago. There’s a huge amount of mutual trust that goes into asking artists to participate in such a venture, and the results have been stunning. Martin Creed has, without exception, created a series of monthly experiences that have engaged our audiences through their sheer scale, beauty, and audacity. None of us could have predicted the

MCA Annual Report 2012 Curatorial 10

transformative effect the artist would have both on the institution and the public. Whether they lost themselves in a sea of balloons, gazed in awe at the huge, revolving Mothers sculpture, or scratched their heads quizzically at the rolled-up paper balls that appeared in our galleries, visitors have told us that they were amused, challenged, and moved by the world Martin has created in Chicago. We believe these results and reactions are the very fuel that drives a contemporary art museum.
