CIIURC H LA'VTON (or LAWTON) is a parish in union, Odd Rode polling district, containing, by the census of l8Gl, 724, and in 1811, 753 inhabitants, and 1452 acres; in the hundred of Northwich, deanery of , archdeaconry and diocese of , Mid Cheshire, on the Trent and Mersey Canal, near the borders of Staffordshire; 6 miles south-west from Congleton, and 6 south-east from . The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Samuel Nunn, ~LA., is valued at £360 per annum, with resiuenee, and is in the patronage of William John Rigley Lawton, Esq. The church is in the Early English style, and consi'sts of nave, with an embattled tower containing five bells and a clock, which bear the bate of 1713. The nave was rebuilt in 1803, and the tower restored in 1873. On the south side is an ancient ornamented Norman doorway. The \Vesleyans have a place of wor;:;hip here. There are charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor, producing about £10 per annum. There is a brine spring producing a quantity of good salt. This manor was held as far back as Edward IV., by William Lawton, of the King in capite, by military service, as the twentieth part of a Knight's fee.
