6 President’s Report

In over fifty years of operation, no CPCC season has seen such diverse and extensive level of activity. The entry and operation of 6 senior and 18 junior teams in the MWCA competitions, ‘Milo’ junior Intro to Cricket sessions, a senior T20 team and an over 40’s Masters team kept organisers, the committee, coaches and players extremely busy.

Kicking off 2009/10 was the Club’s second international tour this time taking in Singapore and Amsterdam in addition to the three weeks in England. Once again the hard work of the Tour Committee produced a wonderful cricket and travel experience for those fortunate enough to Tour. It started in the hot, humid conditions of Singapore where ex-Pat (& ex-Plat) Mark Christensen organised a fixture against his adopted Misfits side. A somewhat moist England still managed to charm the Tourists in the middle weeks and the finale in Amsterdam will be talked about for years to come. Thanks to Adrian Molloy, our tourists well and truly had their fill of cheese, Heineken, bicycles and good old Dutch hospitality by the end.

The long list of Junior MWJCA representatives & award winners is a measure of just how far we’ve come with our juniors in ten years, and an indicator of the great work done by our coaches, managers and mentors – and of course Vicki, our Junior’s Secretary. The best display of our Junior’s is however the End Of Season Picnic & Presentation Day at Clontarf. It is here that we get the strongest sense of how our young cricketers and their parents enjoyed their season, regardless of whether they won, lost or gained representative honours. To see so many kids from our local community in their CPCC gear, and to hear about their exploits and experiences is most rewarding.

The journey for a number of our Juniors leads to our Senior 7th Grade Development squad overseen by John Jackson (Jacko’s Cricket Academy). After a successful first year last season, this team comprising a mix of U16/17s, rookie Seniors, fathers and Club stalwarts, clinched a Premiership after a thrilling victory in the Grand Final. Congratulations to Captain Dom Wheeler for leading this squad to the title against a decidedly more ‘Senior’ opposition. One event associated with this team almost slipped through without acknowledgment. Mikaela Turik continued her run of ‘firsts’ for the club by being the first female to officially compete in one of our Senior Mens teams when she turned out for the Mighty Sevenths in round 9. I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t an Association first as well.

Our other Senior teams had mixed success with only Adam Peacock’s 5th Grade making the finals. They went through to the GF but unfortunately found themselves chasing too many runs to have a realistic chance of victory in a game they had to win. The ‘Fighting Firsts’ is a moniker we can attach to our old A1 team after Rob Minnett’s squad made a very late charge for a finals spot. They missed out by one run. Brenden Balls’ seconds were amongst the leaders in the first half of the year however injuries and player availability proved too hard to overcome in a very strong competition. Daz McDermott’s 3rds went into the season with some trepidation due to being under-gunned however they had several splendid victories, none better than the round 5 one day victory at Vic Huxley Oval. The Fourths under Blake Conde were finals bound one minute and gone the next thanks to everything going wrong in the last round.

If you hadn’t had enough cricket by the end of Saturday, then Sunday usually offered up either a T20, Masters or Social match. Tom Carden put up his hand to organise a CPCC entry into the MWCA’s first foray into the shortest form of the game. An even representation of players from all our 6 senior grades made a true Club team and it bonded instantly with strong results. In the semi finals, they came up against a Harbord Diggers ‘All Star’ side which was effectively a full strength First Grade team. Our ‘Pride of the Plateau’ men promptly dispatched these unbackable favourites but unfortunately a young Wakehurst team were too good on the day in the GF.

2009/10 marked CPCC’s inaugural season in the Sydney Masters Competition. Our Club is blessed with plenty of depth in the ‘Over 40’ category, with several still playing A Grade cricket. This made for a strong Masters squad which announced its arrival on the scene early with a solid victory over Manly Grade Club at the beautiful Manly Oval. Unfortunately our much anticipated game against Manly was to be their last due to an inability to consistently field a side forcing their withdrawal from competition. This would cost us dearly in terms of re-draws and points adjustments. In the end, we finished 3rd but all who represented CPCC enjoyed the quality of the grounds, competition and civility of Masters Cricket. Thanks to John Jackson for leading the Master’s charge, Andrew Fraser for getting us onto Manly Oval and Ross Wiblin for arranging Grahams Reserve as our home ground.

The ongoing saga of PIPE International’s drilling work on Plateau Park played itself out during the season with a disappointing conclusion. The optimism of PIPE recognising their obligation to compensate the community for the year long occupation of Plateau Park dissipated into an ugly feud that even reached the pages of The Australian newspaper. CPCC continued to lobby Council to act appropriately in the Community’s interest after PIPE broke off communication, and after receiving PIPE’s insulting reply continued to bring awareness to the issue through the Manly Daily which was then picked up by The Australian. In short, PIPE left Plateau Park in a worse condition than when they took it over for more than a year. They encouraged the Community to believe that they would compensate us for the loss of our facility, then walked away when the job was done. After crying poor, PIPE Networks accepted a $373 million takeover offer by TPG Telecom at $6.30 per share in March this year. Unfortunately a small volunteer community organisation like ours just can’t afford the time and resources, which are stretched to the limit just to put players on the field, to maintain a campaign against a company like this and hold them accountable as corporate citizens. The small consolation was that the enforced layoff of Plateau Park for soccer, and the work done by Council in lieu of PIPE’s contributions was that by the time we got on to Plateau Park in round 3 the ground was in relatively good shape. By the end of the summer we had the ‘square’ looking tip top as Council had repaired PIPE’s damage and grass growing conditions were excellent. The challenge is to now maintain this and expand it to the rest of the outfield. One thing is clear however, PIPE or whoever they are now are not welcome back at the Plateau.

There were also developments regarding other facilities at Plateau Park. The Youth Club was renovated over Dec/Jan but unfortunately they ripped out the showers. CPCC and Strikers, the two biggest clubs operating from Plateau Park and hall hirers were not consulted on the renovations with the result being the Youth Club is now less satisfactory to use as a game day club facility. On the positive side, Council gave CPCC the green light to renovate the old Tennis Shed for use as a small facility to provide shelter, amenity and storage. The call has gone out to all Club Members who are builders, architects or tradesmen to assist us in the project. Hopefully we will have it operational by Christmas 2010.

Finally I would like to wish Jamie Hobdell & his partner Anita the very best as they head home to England. We thank them both for embracing and involving themselves in just about all aspects of our Club. Jamie’s 9-77 will be forever in the record books as will Anita's name on the Golf Trophy.

7 Treasurer’s Report Any year is a good year that a Plateau team finishes as Premiers. This year that honour belongs to our Junior development 7th Grade side. Congratulations to Dom Wheeler on Captaining the magnificent sevenths to a Premiership win. John Jackson also has every right to feel pretty proud of himself after nurturing our Plateau-bred juniors through the first stage of their cricketing careers and then guiding them to the Minor Premiers and victory in the Grand Final. The Adam Peacock led Fifth Grade team also made it to the Grand final. They put up a great fight chasing a large total, but in the end they fell short. Our top 4 grades did not make it to the finals and will all be out to settle that score next season. The following tables summarises where all Plateau teams finished in the regular and post seasons:

Team Regular Season After the finals 1st 5th - 2nd 6th - 3rd 7th - 4th 5th - 5th 2nd Runners Up 7th 1st Premiers

Juniors - Continued success for the Juniors is no accident. The CPCC Juniors juggernaut continues as the years roll on. Fined tuned logistics are common place but should never be taken for granted. While we have created a culture of teamwork and great organisation we need to maintain this year after year to keep the club strong. As we all know the Juniors are the life blood of the club and this needs constant monitoring and care, the kind provided by the likes of Vicki and the team of volunteers, managers supporters and helping hands. Thanks to everyone for another great year.

Financial - Another strong performance in the financials for the Club. The loss in the bank balance is a win in the assets. We have purchased $11K of cricket ball stock at a good price, so we will not need to purchase any cricket balls over the coming season which is a definite benefit to the club. It is also important to note that our average profit over the last few years is less than the sponsorship amount that we have received from the Brookvale Hotel. Without the sponsorship payment we would need to either find other lucrative fund raising opportunities or raise Fees to a lot higher than what they are. Players are urged to continue to attend the hotel to keep the sponsorship partnership strong with the Brookvale Hotel. Thanks to Michael Patterson for his ongoing support. Thanks also to Toby for another great year crunching the Plateau’s numbers and doing a darn good job.

Plateau Park - Finally we got Vic Huxley Oval back. Having said that, it still wasn’t ready for the start of the season. A debacle of immense proportions. Pipe International have a lot of explaining to do. The drilling rig left a depression on the western side of the wicket which promptly fills with water and makes play an impossiblilty when games at other venues will go ahead as scheduled. The good news is that our President has secured “in principal” agreement to use the derelict Tennis Hut for our Cricketing purposes. Hopefully we will be able to refurbish this in the coming months to upgrade the facilities at Plateau Park.

Presentation Night - CPCC is such a great club with so many events going on that the season summary at the Presentation Night is always colourful and an entertaining round up of the season just finished. With the 7th Grade team as Premiers there was plenty of cheering and awards were flowing as fast as the beers, by the gallery of the usual suspects that congregate around at the bar. Congrats to Jeff Porter-Dening on collecting the Bruce Shearer, JPD had a super season. We also had our fair share of people collecting trophies at the MWCA Presentation night. Not the least of which was our own John Jackson who picked up the Sportsman of the Year for his endless thirst for cricketing exploits from running the 7ths to running the Masters and the 2nd CPCC England Tour.

England Tour - In July 2009, CPCC embarked on its 2nd Tour to England. This time we stopped in Singapore on the way over and on the way back we stopped in Amsterdam. The Singapore leg got the Tour off to an incredible start. With Mark Christensen as our host the game was a great success and the hospitality was as fantastic as the humidity. One way to describe the time we had in England is to say we all returned approx 5 kilos heavier (& I’m not talking about luggage). We revisited some venues we played in the 2005 Tour and received the same warm welcome. We also visited some new Clubs in the York region taking in the sights and a hugely memorable day at York Races. Of course we were dominant in the Boat Races. Everything about the Amsterdam leg was better than the high expectations. The day at the VRA was excellently organised; the flag waving, the food, the beer, the trophy presentation, the prizes, the speeches & the friendly people. No wonder that night went til 5am. Thanks to Adrian “Mugsy” Molloy for the effort in pulling that event together. I managed to condense the Tour down to a 2 hour dvd. If you get a chance, have a look, at the very least, I’m sure the boatraces will amuse. Also there’s literally thousands of photos if you need more evidence of a great tour.

Masters - This year was the first year we had enough 40 year olds to form our own Masters Team. And what a great team it was. For those that don’t know what the format is, minimum age of 40, 40 overs per side, retire at 40 and come back in at the end if required, and if the temp hits 40 the game is called off. We don’t want people to expire before they retire, do we? We played a great season and came ever so close to winning in our first season. The top 4 teams all lost 2 games each and the ultimate winners, Parramatta, was declared Premiers after a complicated week of emails and number crunching and stats reconciling. Next year we will have more players that will qualify for Masters and we will look to claim the Masters crown for the Plateau. John Jackson deserves great praise for organising the season, as does Stirling Hamman for his endless commitment to the great game of cricket in all its forms.

Twenty/20 - Another new venture for the Plateau this year was the Twenty/20. Led by Tom Carden the Plateau side made it all the way to the Grand Final. Our best win in the competition was over Harbord Diggers. Dean Storey and Matt Richards tore the Diggers team apart having them 9/23 after 10 overs. The Diggers were shell-shocked. They managed a 40 run 10th wicket partnership but Brenden Ball and Jason Ferris put the target away with relative ease. In the final, we put on a competitive total of 180 however our bowling could not break through and our target was chased down with overs & wickets to spare. The Twenty/20 will be another stand out feature on the jam packed CPCC calendar for next year.

9 Ten Years Ago 1999/2000, the season that spanned two centuries saw several significant developments for the Club. Firstly, CPCC was successful in lobbying Warringah Council in having the cricket field at Plateau Park named after Life Member and Collaroy Plateau community servant Vic Huxley. Councillor Julie Sutton was instrumental in this decision, assisting the Club after being lobbied by Dave Quarford.

Speaking of clubmen and Dave Quarford for that matter, in the year that he handed over the Presidency to yours truly Freddy was granted Life Membership after many years service as a player, captain, President and Junior Coach. Sadly ex-clubman Jack Eaton passed away during the season.

The turn of the century couldn’t be allowed to pass without a CPCC ‘Team of the Millenium’ being compiled. The team selected was: 1. Geoff ‘Chippy’ Brown 2. Pete Henriksen 3. Robert Minnett 4. Ross Fairhall 5. David Tallack 6. John Wellburn (vc) 7. George Turner (c) & wk 8. Don Leech 9. Alan Richardson 10. Vic Huxley 11. Bob Williams 12. Peter Bell

Criteria for this was a minimum of 4 seasons, standard of performance over time, consideration of grade played and significant on-field contributions to team/club.

The Club moved headquarters from the Surf Rock after one year to the Dee Why Hotel. Social Secretary Matt Kehoe lined up the deal and the move was well supported. The development of a club website by Chris Jack opened CPCC up to the world and is now one of our most important assets for attracting new players and communicating to members. Unfortunately the Club missed out on the domain name www.cpcc.com.au to the Cooper Plains Childcare Centre. This was accompanied by the completion of the club’s All-time Statistics Database. Up to this time, career totals were kept for leading players and updated annually as running totals. Whilst this gave us our leaders in the main categories, it was limited to the top five or six. Milton Lidgard’s vast collection of Club records allowed for a more extensive list of top performers to be compiled, in more categories of statistics.

The club fielded four senior teams and five junior teams. Of the senior teams, John Jackson’s A3s were the best performers making the finals. The A1s lamented the loss of Mark Christensen to New York, whilst opposing batsmen rejoiced. Matt Kehoe’s A2’s were building a formidable squad but couldn’t make the most of their opportunities – a hattrick to Dom Tilden being a highlight. Alex McGee’s two centuries highlighted Ben Ireland’s B2 team season.

The Social Scene continued to grow. A move back to Longy Chinese was for the last time, with the sad news that the iconic restaurant was to be bulldozed for units. Perhaps the staff were just sick of cleaning it after our annual dinners! Attendees were entertained by Chris Jack’s “James Bond trivia”. Readers of the report were treated to a golfing retrospective by Brad Lasoski. Brad recounted his experience in the golf day going down to Bob Vere by a shot thanks to incorrect scoring by Chris Jack using his new Palm Pilot device. The article starts with a colourful description of the event….. “ Bayview Golf Course. The dreaded road holes; a blinding tee shot up a short par 4, a long par 3 back down the hill. The 96’ Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon is starting to kick in. Up the hill again, punch six-iron, the temples are starting to throb and I am sweating pure Coonawarra. Pull out driver on the dog leg 7th and choose a highly ambitious line, straight over the trees. The group behind starts heckling. Those coming off the adjacent greens are trying to steal the cheese and biscuits out of the cart. These Plateau Cricket Club golf days can be brutal”.

The Club’s Bank account was $3707.43 under Treasurer Mark Christensen, Secretary Rob Minnett complained about the standard of umpiring rightfully enquiring as to how can batsmen be judged as having crossed on an LBW, Alex McGee won the Shearer, and Andrew MacLeman the Armstrong. The ‘Randolph Beddows’ Flag

Randolph Beddows is well known in Manly Warringah cricket circles, particularly amongst the First Graders. There is no keener cricketer in the District than Randy. Whether it has been following Martin Shield, the old Forest Hawks, Balgowlah or of late Harbord Bowling teams, Randolph has been a regular on the sidelines for years. Given a chance to field for any team who was short, Randolph would be out like a shot invariably to fine leg. Otherwise, he’s more than happy to have a chat and reminisce.

In 2004 Randolph returned a piece of CPCC history he had been custodian of for 25 years. The small flag, one of many which used to be attached to wooden stakes and employed as boundary markers, was left behind after a match in the late 60’s. It is the last known survivor.

It was decided to honour the first grade player with the highest ‘Shearer’ Points total for the season with the creation of this trophy. Season Player Points 2009/10 Jason Haithwaite 786 2008/09 Rob Minnett 806 2007/08 Pete Henriksen 992

12 Major Club Awards

The ‘B & B’ Trophy (Brian & Barbara Moore)  This perpetual senior Club Award was added during the 2001/02 season courtesy of ex- clubman Brian Moore. Brian, who re-visited the Plateau for the first time since returning to England after the ’72 season, was thrilled to see the Club continuing on as strong as ever after all these years. Brian and his son Ian who moved to Australia from England in the sixties, played for several seasons with the Plateau with Brian captaining the 1971/72 premiership winning C2 team.

It was agreed by the Executive that the Award be presented to a player who displays an effort, both on and off the field which is above and beyond that which is normally expected. The winner is decided by vote of nominations received from team Captains.

This year the presentation of the ‘B & B’ Trophy is to Rob Van Dam. ‘Cloggs’ has been a first grade stalwart for many years before focussing on participation in the new Masters squad. Whichever grade he has played, Rob always offers great support to the Captain. This usually takes the form of minding & transporting the kit and other gear, or quietly taking the initiative to set up stumps and boundaries. Above all, Cloggs is an excellent Team Member, always positive with his team mates, respectful of officials and one who lets his considerable cricket ability answer anything thrown at him by the opposition. Rothmans sponsored this trophy, first awarded in 1968. Originally introduced for the winner of the Club’s Annual Single Wicket Competition, this award now includes the winner of a Double Wicket Competition, a variation of the single wicket concept. Both events involve club members (individually or in pairs) playing off against each other over competition rounds to decide finalists and eventually a winner/winning pair. Results are determined by runs scored and wickets taken against drawn opponents. The event was resurrected in 2006 after a 17 year hiatus.  Touring Trophies

These two Perpetual Trophies were created during the 50th Anniversary Tour of England. Players are eligible for these awards by playing in any official CPCC touring match (either International or Domestic) or official home ‘host’ matches against visiting touring teams. They are awarded on a conventional season basis (1 July to 30 June).

I think everyone goes into a new season looking to go all the way to the Grand Final. You may however, struggle to get there if you lose the first 5 games or go into several games short of players or, in our case, do both of the above. I’d like to thank all the lads for what was a testing season. As usual we produced some great individual performances, not the least of which was Jason Haithwaite’s century in the final game.

Our first 5 games were a series of unfortunate events. In the first game, we selected one of the recent internet signings in James Houlgrave. James turned up late on the first day without any whites, borrowed one of my England Tour shirts, borrowed pants from Jason, only scored 3 runs and then did a no show on the second day, never returning said shirt or pants. This was made worse by the fact that we lost the game by one wicket & the season was not off to a good start. Game 2 was against old rivals Seaforth. We put a respectable target on the board but with week 2 washed out, this game ended in a draw. Day 1 of game 3 was washed out which meant a one day game in the second week. Hopes were high when we secured the services of Mark Christensen for week 2 & our season was going to get a much needed boost. Hopes were dashed when Cromer rolled us for 70, courtesy of Golden Ducks to Scott Robertson and a dubious LBW Doug Campbell. We managed to claim 6 wickets but our total was far too ordinary. Game 4 was another case of not having a full team on the paddock. With another player short we only put an average score on the board, however we looked to have Harbord Bowling covered. Nothing is certain in cricket & Harbord fought back to claim victory by 1 wicket. At this point, frustration was gathering momentum in the Plateau 1st Grade camp. Game 5 was against Harbord Diggers, the decision to field first looked to have paid off when Sharpy collected the wicket of Cevaal in the first over, but big hitting Bill Clark helped Diggers score 209. We were never really in the hunt but Jason Haithewaite 54 helped us get to a respectable 169.

Game 6 was the Bye and we were still without a win heading into Game 7 against Belrose. I chimed in with 91 and we were looking in great shape at 3/171 but we lost 4 wickets for 5 runs and all of a sudden we were knee deep in it & all out for 209. This was another game where we batted a player short & it nearly cost us the match, but we got Belrose out for 180 and we finally had our first win.

By Game 8 Seaforth had officially folded, bringing Nick Buxton to the ranks of Collaroy Plateau. David Moss and Jason Ferris formed a 99 run partnership and we declared at 8 for 206. Paps and Deano both took 3 wickets helping us knock over Mova Vale for 144 and our season was back on track. In Game 9 we were hoping for revenge against Cromer but they passed our 196 with only 7 down.

An amazing spell of bowling by Dave Bennetts 5/25 earned us victory over Harbord Bowling in Game 10. Game 11 was the designated Bye Round following the redesigned draw and in Game 12 against Harbord Diggers, CPCC showed unbelievable teamwork to claim a draw against the minor premiers.

The final game was nothing short of extraordinary. Needing only a draw to make it to the Semi-finals, Belrose set us 195 at Terrey Hills. We started very badly. If a reply of 5/45 wasn’t bad enough, Jason Ferris was ruled out of day 2 with a back injury, leaving us a player short for the 4th time in the season. Dan Peters dug in to help the score along, Sharpy took the score past the follow-on. This brought together Dean Storey and Jason Haithwaite and their task was to score 82 runs to get us into the finals with 1 wicket in hand, otherwise our season was over. No pressure. Jason was letting some shaft out and not to be outdone Dean was too. Was it possible to pull off an incredible victory? Jason Haithwaite provided the next highlight by racking up his first century in first grade. However with an agonising 1 run to tie the match Deano snicked one to slips and the game and season was over. I’d like to congratulate Dean & Jason on one of the most courageous batting efforts I have ever seen.

Well done the boys on the commitment and passion for the game. I’m very keen to head into next season with renewed confidence and take care of some unfinished business.

Well another great season for the Towers (sorry Jacko Plateau) has come and gone. We kicked off with our second Tooouuur of England in July. This time we also played a game against Mark Christensen’s ‘Misfits’ in Singapore on the way & finished with a match against Adrian Mugsy Malloy’s VRA in Amsterdam at the end. We did not win as many games as the 05 tour but we certainly had just as good a time & apart from the blatant false starting (we have video evidence) by our opponents in game 1 we were again undefeated in the boat racing.

Congratulations to Dom Wheelers 7th grade for making this a premiership season at the Plateau, especially to Jacko who recruited me to the mighty CPCC some 16 or so seasons ago & has like myself been chasing an elusive premiership ever since. In fact it looked for a while like John might get 2 in a season as our inaugural Masters side performed brilliantly and challenged strongly for the title right to the end of the season.

Ok so this is supposed to be a 2nd grade report and I haven’t mentioned 2nds yet, well the fact is we did not make the finals after being in the top 4 all season & being top for the first third of the season. We performed well until the Xmas break, but in the New Year we really struggled to be competitive with the bat. So although there were plenty of on field highlights it has to go down as a wasted opportunity as we were certainly capable of beating any side in the comp on our day. The team did however never lose its sense of humour & we were possibly the best represented side at the Brooky Hotel on Sat evenings.

We probably need another shake up in the top grades next season to ensure we remain competitive. As I write the Nelson Bay trip is looming large & I’m sure the player market will be as active there as always. On a more successful note I was pleased to not only play in my first complete Chewy Cup match but to Captain a winning side. It’s always a hotly contested game with bragging rights & the famous Chewy Cup Trophy going to the victor for the next year. Our side had representatives from 5 of our 6 senior sides & in fact we absolutely smashed the Breakers 11 posting well over 200 in our 35 overs & rolling them cheaply just before the rain arrived.

In terms of the number of wins and losses it was a pretty ordinary season. In terms of playing cricket with a good bunch of blokes that all got on well with each other every Saturday, it was a great season.

We had a few close losses and a few close wins but struggled as a team to bat consistently and, more importantly, to our potential. Every player has the ability to score 25 or more runs on a regular basis but of players that batted more than eight innings, we only had four players average over 17 with the rest averaging between 6 and 12 and that was the main reason for our less than successful season.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though as we had seven players getting half centuries this season which is by far and away the most successful season that I’ve been involved with in the last ten years in terms of the number of individual players doing that. Andrew Davis was the pick of our batsmen with two half centuries (62 and 53*) and the winner of the batting average award with 24.67. David Quarford top scored with 84 (to go with a 57) and Steve Albanese showed great promise in his comeback season with CPCC after a few years in the wilderness scoring 52, 31* and 30* and we will be looking to him to continue that on to bigger and better things next season. Other half-centurions were James Dyson (74), Pete Relf (60), Nathan Osborne (57*) and Darren McDermott (50). Another positive was the promotion of local CPCC junior Tom Carden to the top of the order to open the batting. Carden showed great temperament in the new role and saw his average double when opening the batting compared to when batting down the order.

We’ve got plenty of good bowling options and our attack was again spearheaded by Mick Mackin who finished the season with 39 wickets which included two “5 wickets in an innings” performances. Mackin was given great support from the wily old veteran David Quarford who took 18 wickets and the bowling average award with an average of 16.89 just edging out Mackin who averaged 17.18. The control shown by the old pro Quarford still amazes opposition players, especially the younger ones that haven’t faced such beguiling bowling and competitive temperament as of that delivered by Quarford. Davis also bowled some great opening spells with his left arm swingers and Ben Fudali, once his knee injury had completely healed, bowled with good pace and aggression. Osborne also bowled with great pace including one frightening spell where he took five wickets in thirteen balls in a one day match where he finished with 5/25 off seven overs, 24 of those runs coming from six inside or outside edges that went for four. Osborne was only able to play 6 matches this season but was good to have on board in those games. Before finishing up the bowling wrap, special mention must go to “the partnership breaker” Ben Ireland who took a wicket in his first over in each of the first four games and again in his seventh bowl for the season with his leg and top spinners. He also took a wicket in the second over of his spell in the sixth game and could have added to his tally but for a dropped catch in another first over of a spell. If the younger cricketers coming through are beguiled by Quarford’s offies, they are positively hypnotized by Ireland’s uniquely special deliveries.

There’s nothing I like better than being in the field with ten of my mates and this year was no exception. Our fielding, in partnership with our bowling, is our strength and we had a good season in the field. We took some fantastic catches this season and our ground fielding was as good as it’s ever been. The two most pleasing things about our fielding is the attitude and effort every player puts in and, more importantly, if a catch does go down, no one blows up and starts having a go at the player that has dropped it. Every one of us has dropped catches in the past and every one of us will drop another one in the future so there’s no point in bagging the player who is already beating himself up about it and, as captain, it’s good to know that we are a tight knit group that just gets on with the job no matter what has happened the previous ball. Our fielding award this season went to Andrew Cameron who took some very sharp catches at square leg and who saved countless boundaries with his panther like reflexes and was a runaway winner when the player’s votes were counted for this award. On a personal note, it was also good to get my name on the Warwick Armstrong Trophy again with 21 catches but I couldn’t have done it without the bowlers.

In summing up, we had some memorable moments as a team this season --- bowling St Peters out for 84 in our win over those knobs…..scoring 301 in our win over Belrose….a 95 run tie against Cromer……and the most memorable, restricting North Steyne to 144 with some magnificent bowling and fielding in a one dayer before falling in a heap to be 9/102 with three overs to go to then watch Osborne smash 37 off about 12 balls to finish with 57* and a one run win with a leg bye on the last ball of the match was a fantastic feeling. To do it up at Vic Huxley Oval aka Plateau Park aka “The Home Of Cricket” aka “the most picturesque ground in the world” was the icing on the cake! --- and look forward to next season in the hope that everyone delivers on their ability with the bat a bit more often than we did this season and have a real crack at bringing another title home to our great club.

Our season started slowly with a convincing loss to DY RSL, as we struggled to field a team and find any rhythm. Our frustrations continued into the second round with a convincing 236 posted on the board against grand finalists - Long Reef, thanks to a superb 101 run partnership between Humberstone & Faulkner, only to have the second week washed out.

We found our step in the third round; even if it took three 2nd grade players to help secure the 47-run win. Against a weaker Cromer, we managed to restrict their batting order to 165 thanks to a haul of 5-32 for fill-in Dobie. It was then left to Gilkes (78) & Wearing (80) to bat the opposition out of the game by scoring 140 for the 2nd wicket.

Round 4 saw our second loss of the season against last year's (and this year's) Premiers - Harbord Bowling. Our bowlers did extremely well to restrict a very strong batting side to 160 from 39 overs, with Moore taking 7-42 and Rohanek 3-45. Unfortunately we all out for 111 from 49 overs. With so much time left in the day, we attempted to go for the quick outright, and had Harbord Bowling 7-119 before Moore went for a caught & bowled chance, only to watch is finger dislodge out of the socket. Special mentions go to Eade for taking 3 catches in an innings and to Steel Jnr (age: 14) who lined up against ex-1st grade bowlers to score his first run in senior cricket, before being dubiously given out by his father "caught down leg-side".

With round 5 came another unsuccessful outing for the once dominant 4th grade side. After limping to 170 off the designated 35 overs (thanks largely to the 63 sundries, including 45 wides), our normally tight fielding could not produce the goods, and Harbord Diggers (last year's easy-beats, this year's runners up) cruised to victory with 6 balls to spare and 3 wickets in hand.

We finally got to play at the Home of Cricket (Vic Huxley Oval) in round 6 against hit-and-miss Terrey Hills. After being put into bat CPCC managed a defendable 196 - despite Moss falling for a 1st innings (and first ball playing for CPCC 4th's) golden duck. With a few overs left in the first day, we had Terrey Hills struggling at 3/8 and our tails up in the air. Unfortunately, the second week proved fruitless as only two more wickets fell, and Terrey Hills rode their luck (especially with some old, feeble umpiring) to reach the target in 67 overs.

Going into round 7 against Belrose RL, CPCC were 2nd last on the table with 1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses. Something had to go right, and this round it did. With Humberstone at the helm, and CPCC's first win of the toss, we set out to make up for the poor start to the season. Moss blasted 55 in a 61 run opening stand with Humberstone (first to fall on 12). Pressley (90), Moore (34), Rohanek (21), Rovere (35) and an unbeaten 52* from Faulkner kept the runs flowing and CPCC declared at the end of the first day 7 for 352. Needless to say, the task of scoring 5 runs per over proved too daunting for Belrose, and they fell well short at 239 after 53 overs. Rohanek finishing with 4-72, Moore 3-83 and Faulkner 2-20.

After such a spectacular win the previous week, it was time to face DY RSL again. Once again, after being sent in to bat only a few batsmen got starts with top scorers Pressley 29, Moss 28 and Coates 20 in our total of 145. DY RSL looked the goods at 4/95; however, they lost their last 6 wickets for 12 runs. Rohanek (5/35) and Coates (3/23) did the damage with ball.

First game of 2010 saw us back up at Vic Huxley Oval against Long Reef in a one-dayer. With Conde and Humberstone MIA, Pressley took the reins for the first time since 2008. Excellent bowling changes & field placings saw Long Reef crumble to 89 off 31 overs, with Le taking his first hat trick off his much acclaimed "spinners". Pick of the bowlers were Moore 3/13, Le 3/32 and the return of Chung 2/9. CPCC got off to a very poor start, losing consistent wickets to be 8/69. It was left to Le (8*) and Conde (17*) to see off the bowling attack and score the runs patiently with 3 overs to spare. Chung top scored with 24.

3 wins in a row was stretched to 4 after round 10 against Cromer. A very dominant bowling display left Cromer all out for 105 in the final over with Moore taking 4/18, Rovere 2/17 and Chung 2/21. CPCC then left Cromer for dead, passing the total with 6 wickets in hand and 12 balls to spare. Moss 27, Moore 24* and Rohanek 24* caused chaos to the Cromer bowling attack, forcing them to use 8 different bowlers within the 35 overs.

Our streak of wins ended in round 11 against premiers Harbord Bowling. On a scorching day that required frequent stoppages, CPCC managed to reach 4/146 of 35 overs thanks to a Chung 54* and Rovere 45* partnership that saved us from a horrendous position of 4/35 at drinks. Our defence started well, taking 2 quick wickets to have HBCC 2/18; however, their two best batsmen took the game away from us, reaching the target in a rain & wind affected match in the 27th over with 6 wickets in hand. Faulkner bowled exceptionally well to have figures of 2/35 from his 7 overs, whilst Chung & Humberstone took a wicket each.

With a spot in the top four within grasp, and playing the top 3 sides in the last four rounds, CPCC needed to up the intensity going into the finals. Round 12 started well against Harbord Diggers, with Conde (56) and Rovere (45) combining for an 84-run, 5th wicket partnership. Lusty hitting from Le (36*), Moss (25) & Rohanek (23) took the total to 248 from 69 overs. With a good position set, and favourites to leapfrog Harbord Diggers into 3rd spot, all CPCC needed was a good 2nd week. Unfortunately...... it rained.

Our travels took us to the great, wind-swept heights of Tania Park against the 7th place Terrey Hills. Things started well for CPCC, rolling Terrey Hills by tea for 53, and with only 3 bowlers used. The win was assured before the first wicket fell with Moss first to fall on 42. Humberstone (31) cemented one end whilst Chung (21) & Moore (37*) played all around the park. Conde (30*) then came in to add some excitement, combining with Moore to score 49 runs in the last 4 overs. CPCC declared 5/178 at the end of the day, with a lead of 125. Day 2 started slowly, and it took 6 overs & 10 runs before the first wicket fell. Despite a minor 35-run 4th wicket partnership, CPCC cruised to outright victory, taking the last 6 wickets for 21 runs. Pick of the bowlers were Rohanek (3/12 & 5/20), Moore (4/20 & 0/18), Chung (3/21 & 1/7) & Coates (3/13). Le's direct-hit run out from third man also proved a highlight.

The final round saw CPCC (now in 2nd place) up against Belrose RL (equal 2nd place). The winner was guaranteed a spot in the finals, whilst the loser had to sweat it out, hoping that either of the bottom two teams would beat the teams coming 4th & 5th. We were surprised to be sent into bat on hot, dry day down at Lake Park and the unexpected decision by Belrose proved a blessing...... for Belrose. CPCC were rolled for 70 in the 50th over, Pressley top scored with 33, whilst our batting card showed 6 ducks. Belrose went to guarantee the win on day 1 with big hitting and a lot of risk taking, leaving them 4/95 at stumps. Wickets fell consistently on the second day, and Belrose were all out for 159, a lead of 89. With 42 over left in the day,

24 Seniors Team Reports

CPCC went for the outright victory to put us into the finals. With a change in batting line up, Eade & Conde combined for a 2nd wicket partnership of 42 before both fell in quick succession. Chung then smacked his way to 38 off as many seconds whilst Rohanek proceeded to hit the ball straight back to the bowler first ball. Le then led the charge at the back end, scoring 44 with some huge 6s into the lake, before being bowled for the last wicket. With lead of 72 (after scoring 161 of 24.4 overs), and only 17 overs remaining, it was down to the bowlers to finish the miraculous. Belrose weren't going to die wondering either, and a tight finish loomed. Things were not going well early, but finally the opening partnership was broken for 36, and we soon afterwards had Belrose 5/57 and heading into their tail. At 6/66 we were still positive, but a number of 'dubious' umpiring decisions took the wind out of us, and Belrose got the runs with 2 overs and 3 wickets in hand. It was a hard fought day, with 23 wickets and 300 runs being scored on day 2 alone. It was a gutsy effort, but not enough to secure a spot in the finals, with 4th & 5th winning their respective games, and pushing CPCC into the much dreaded 5th place.

It was a mixed season for the CPCC side, with 3 consecutive losses followed by 4 consecutive wins. Twice this season we managed to post a decent score on the board, only to have the second week washed out - what hurts more is that these games were against the teams that eventually finished 3rd & 4th.

Well done to all the guys who either continued to play with the side, or joined us for the first time.

Yeah man...... let's carry our hard work into 2010/11 ? the Year of the Tanks!

5th Grade

The 2009/2010 Season proved to be a successful one for the 5th Grade team. A Grand Final appearance against Harbord Diggers was just reward for a season of hard work. Unfortunately we may not have been good enough on the day to take the title nut I am sure that every member of the team would say that they were satisfied with the season.

The year started with a number of new faces as we lost a number of players to other grades. This allowed us to welcome new players as well as some old friends as well. The end result was a group of guys keen to enjoy the season ahead. And what a start to the season we had! Steve Bull rattled of an amazing 177 in the first innings of the first game, falling just short of the club record for highest individual score. This was made even more amazing given that practise sessions in the pre-season were few and far between. We won that game and were off to a fantastic start.

As the season progressed, the wins continued with only a few hiccups along the way. Along with the wins came the development of a number of players in the squad, which was just reward for their efforts. Anthony Johnson gets special mention for his hard work throughout the year to develop as a “Go-To bowler” when a wicket was needed. Two seasons ago Anthony could barely manage a bowl in the middle but this season saw him break numerous partnerships, assisting the team to take control of matches at crucial times. Coupled with this, Anthony also achieved his highest score with the bat (31 not out) further demonstrating his growth as a player.

Two other players that grew over the season were Brian Siao and Chris Wiles. Brian has developed into a fantastic keeper who is now as easy behind the stumps against the spinners as he is against the quicks. Chris had his first season at the Plateau and has demonstrated that he will be a future bowling force, just as well given the state of the existing fast bowling stocks!

Throughout 2009/2010 we struggled with player availability due to illness, injury and other commitments. We were extremely grateful for the implementation of the Super Sub rule. If had not been available the season may have not had such a positive outcome.

I am sure that the team would agree that 2009/2010 was enjoyable, whilst challenging. It provided everyone with an opportunity to be involved, whilst still achieving results. I would like to also thank all the team for their efforts throughout the season and I look forward to 2010/2011. Adam Peacock 5th Grade Captain

26 Seniors Team Reports 7th Grade

PREMIERSSSSSS! 2009/10 was a highly successful season for CPCC’s 7th Grade development squad. As per the supposed ‘President’s Cup’ rules of MWCA, our team was composed mainly of players from our junior U16/17s and U15s sides alongside a few older players who made up the core of the squad throughout the season. The team breezed through the season losing only one game, and took out the premiership after an extremely hard fought win in the GF over Balgowlah Golf – a team made up purely of adults. This is a great accomplishment for such a young squad, and I would like to take a moment to provide a quick summary of the highlights of this outstanding season: Round 1 – Wakehurst @ Passmore 2. We got our season off to the perfect start, compiling 257 on day one. Toby Horstead got his best ever season with the bat off to a great start with 75, and was well backed up by CPCC debutants James Price (41*) and Jack Ross (27). With only 9 players in the second week, Wakehurst struggled with the bat, bowled out for 39 (Jeff Porter-Dening 6/26) and 94 (Adam Powers 4/22). Round 2 – Manly @ Dee Why Oval. We racked up an almighty 377 runs on day 1 against Mike Pawley’s 7th grade side, primarily thanks to maiden CPCC centuries from Dom Wheeler (119) and Jeff Porter-Dening (117), who shared a 211 run 3rd wicket partnership. However, torrential rain on day 2 forced a draw. Round 4 – Balgowlah @ Balgowlah Oval. An under strength Balgowlah side were no match for a CPCC side on top form – bowled out for just 67 on day 1 thanks to 4/13 from Angus Mackenzie, a recently graduated junior. 62 runs to Jack Ross and 49 from Dom helped us to 224, and another outright victory was secured when Angus bagged 6/17 in the second innings – making it an impressive 10/30 for the match. Round 7 – Harbord Bowling @ Kierle Park 1. After 4 outright victories from 5 matches, our first real test of the season came against Harbord. We were able to restrict Harbord to 155 on day 1, primarily thanks to 4/22 from club stalwart John Jackson, however we made a meal of the run chase. After slumping to 3/7, we limped to 9/127 thanks to 50 from Jack Ross, before an outstanding 30 run final wicket partnership between Tim Morris and Jacko saw us scrape home for a 1 wicket win. Round 8 – Wakehurst @ Lionel Watts. Another maiden century for 7th grade – this time from club treasurer Toby Horstead (123) – and 50 runs from the U16/17s David Morris saw us post 287 on day one. On day 2 the wickets were shared around as Wakehurst were bowled out for 122 and then 63 (Angus 4/11, Nathan Lange 4/20, Damon Twight 3/25) for another outright win. Round 9 – Manly @ Millers 2. Our first game after Christmas saw a club first, as Mikaela Turik became the first woman to play in the MWCA senior comp. In a one day match, we bowled Manly out for 107 thanks to 4/14 from U16/17s player Mitch Curran and 3/12 from newcomer Maxim Mangraviti, before easily securing an 8 wicket win (Toby 45, Pete Bonner 28, Dom 24*). Round 11 – Balgowlah @ Tania Park. Our one loss for the season came against Balgowlah under horrendous conditions. After setting a competitive 168 from our 35 overs (Jacko 44, Nick Bonner 34, Tim Morris 31), Balgowlah easily chased it down once the wind and rain set in, making it extremely difficult for our bowlers. Round 14 – Harbord Bowling @ Forest High. In the final round of the season, we bowled Harbord out for 114 on day 1 (Jeff 4/11, Jacko 2/34) before cruising past the total on day 2 (Jeff 51*, Toby 27, Dom 26). This ensured we finished the regular season as minor premiers with 83 points. Semi Final – Harbord Bowling @ David Thomas 2. Having just beaten Harbord in the final round, and needing only a draw to progress to the final, runs on the board was what we wanted and that was what we got. A second century to Toby (122) at the most crucial point of the season, as well as 83 to Dom saw us set Harbord 322 runs to win. They were never really in the hunt after getting off to a very slow start, and the tail enders were left with far too much work to do as they were bowled out for 224. Angus picked up another 4 wickets, and was well backed up by Jack Ross with 3/27 and Mitch Curran 2/25. Grand Final – Balgowlah @ David Thomas 2. The team was quietly confident heading into the GF, but were nervous after Balgowlah had racked up 370 in their semi against Manly. However we got off to a flyer once again with the bat thanks to Toby (53) and Pete (20), and were 3/108 after 20 overs. The middle order struggled a bit but thanks to a quick fire 30 from Nick Bonner we made it to 9/193 before a spectacular final wicket partnership of 55 between Angus Mackenzie (29) and U16/17s player Sam Cheeseman (17*) helped us make it to 248. Before day 1 was out, we had to bowl 2 overs, and sunk the first dagger into Balgowlah when Nick Bonner produced a spectacular inswinger with his second ball, making the opener look foolish as he shouldered arms before seeing his off stump cartwheel back. On day 2 another early wicket to Nick had Balgowlah 2/4 before they put together a few good partnerships, but we fought back well to have them 6/104 when their gun batsmen chopped on for 54. After that some lower order hitting had Balgowlah in the hunt for a while at 8/194, but 2 wickets in consecutive balls from Mitch Curran sealed the deal as Balgowlah were bowled out for 194. And the Premiership was ours.

A special mention must go to John Jackson, club Vice President, who regularly found young talent to join our side, as well as chipping in himself with consistent performances each and every week. I would particularly like to thank him for asking me to captain the side this year – it was a great honour and he made the job so much easier for me. I would also like to thank club treasurer Toby Horstead for being the rock of the side this season – he continually got us off to a great start with the bat, and was always supportive in the field, again making my life so much easier as captain.

I am very proud of what we achieved this season with such a young squad, and would like wish everyone who played with us good luck for their future cricketing careers. Dom Wheeler 7th Grade Captain

Masters (Over 40) “Age shall not weary them or the years condemn”

After several years in the planning and waiting for players to reach 40 we entered a team in the Sydney Masters comp. I believe it is first CPCC team to play in a season long comp. outside the MWDCA. It proved a very successful venture. A willing band of competitive cricketers enjoyed the Sunday afternoon games played on turf with good spirit. The team finished in fourth position in a 22 team comp. In fact our win loss record of 9-2 along with 3 other teams was the best in the comp. The winners (Parramatta) was decided on a bonus point system. Particularly pleasing was our defeats of Manly, Warringah and Macquarie Uni.

Our squad was made up of: Regulars - David Bennetts, Andrew Cameron, Rob van Dam ,Mathew Golledge, David Halliday, Luke Ireland, John Jackson, Rob McCabe, Scott McLachlan, David Moss, Robert Minnett, Ray Stevenson Part-timers - Peter Bonner, Col Huxley, Paul Brown, David Quarford, Tim Morris

Our consistent performances were built on good depth. We had many competitive all rounders in the side but it was appreciated how players were prepared to take flexible roles. Everyone contributed to team performances. Our left handed opening bowling combination of ‘D’ and Clogs was key in building pressure on opponents. Clogs 6-17 versus Warringah was a fine display of left handed swing bowling. Medium pace support was provided by Dave Moss, Rob McCabe, Luke Ireland, Ray Stevenson, Dave Bennetts and Scott McLachlan. Spin options came from Hallers and Langy.

Our strategy of bat first and defend a score was consistently supported by Rob Minnett at opener. He was the best batter in the competition. Dave Moss, David Halliday, Dave Bennetts and Luke Ireland were ‘40 scorers’ in the middle order. Also important to our batting were consistent contributions at the end from Andrew Davis.

Our fielding set the standard for the competition. Our ground fielding and catching consistently swung games our way....a long ball in the outfield by Luke at Longueville, Dave Lang at square leg v Lindfield, a ripper by Ray at second slip and a fantastic stop and throw by Rob van Dam versus Macquarie Uni come to mind. Rob Minnett did a sterling job behind the stumps and Matt Golledge was a rock at mid off.

Thanks to the Manly grade club for arrangements re Grahams reserve. Also thanks to players who regularly carried out administrative duties.....Andrew (treasurer), Rob van Dam (shade), Luke and Cammo (beer sales), We will be going around again next season so if you are 40 and interested, get in touch!!! It is likely some older masters players may play classics with a new Warringah side next season.

Twenty20

The 2009/2010 season marked the beginning of a new phase in the Manly Warringah competition. A Twenty20 competition was held for the first time, and of course the Plateau jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the new initiative. The T20 season contained 3 pool games followed by a semi and a grand final, with games being held monthly on Sunday mornings at Nolans.

I was given the privilege of being the inaugural T20 skipper and organiser and set about building a squad of keen players with a desire to get representatives from each of the 5 Collaroy teams. This was achieved for game 1 against Harbord Bowling. The squad contained at least 1 player from each grade with a good mixture of youth and experience. We batted first and put on a massive 5/197, 3rd grades Josh Toth provided the highlight with a brilliant 69. Harbord fought well but were never really in it pulling up 13 runs short.

In the following game we were outdone by a strong Wakehurst side. We were bowled out in 19.1 overs for 143, Josh Toth again was the star with 60. Wakehurst got the runs 6 wickets done after 16 overs, 3rd grade skipper Brenden Ball took 3 wickets.

Harbord Diggers forfeited our 3rd pool game, sending us into the semis. We were matched up against the other Diggers team in the comp, labelled as a Diggers Dream Team, as the club picked their strongest possible T20 side for the comp. On a soggy morning Dean Storey and Matt Richards turned it on and absolutely carved through the Diggers batting line up. We gambled by opening with spin, and together the pair had the Diggers at 9/23 by the end of their spell. Dean picked up 5 and Matt grabbed 4. The final wicket fell with their score at a miserly 66. The Plateau cruised to the score only 3 wickets down after 13 overs, Ferris 34 not out.

In the final we were back up against Wakehurst. We batted first and after getting a strong start could not capitalise and put on a big score. We made 163, Minnett 47. The Wakehurst batsmen were fair too good on the day and they chased down our total in 17 overs, only losing 1 wicket. Despite the disappointing grand final loss the first Twenty20 competition was a very enjoyable and successful one for the Plateau. The change to the shorter format for a few games gave players a chance to let their hair down and have a slog without pressure and it was a lot of fun for all involved players and spectators.

Josh Toth picked up the Twenty20 player of the year, which was decided by Shearers.

It was a pleasure to captain and run the team for the season and thanks to everyone who had a game or came down and watched. I hope that Twenty20 will be back and even better in 2010/2011!

32 Junior Secretary’s Report

There really wasn't an ‘off-season’ last year for those of us lucky enough to be in the CPCC touring party to Singapore, England and Amsterdam. There was just enough time to wrap-up season 08/09 before it was time to pack our bags and head to the airport. After 22 tour matches against local sides and a trip to Lords to view The Ashes it was literally straight off the plane just in time for registration for season 09/10 ......

Junior registrations at CPCC and across MWJCA continued to show a healthy increase in numbers especially in the younger/developmental age groups which promises much for the future of Cricket in our area. Just under 250 Junior players signed on to play cricket with CPCC for 09/10 which translated to 18 Saturday morning teams and a Friday evening In2Cricket group.

This strengthening of numbers across the association became evident at the MWJCA rep trials at the start of last season. Last October saw us proudly congratulate 21 CPCC Juniors who were selected for MWJCA representative duties. Rep caps went to: Under 11 Creak Shield - Joel Wood and Ellis Raymond Under 11 IDCA – Aaron Stevens and Noah Vumbaca Under 12 Cawsey Shield – Matt Brock, Glyn Archer, Jake Carden and Nick Hidas Under 13 Gee Shield – Zach Trewartha and Ben Wickham Under 13 IDCA – Kieren Nixon and Matt Wickham Under 14 Moore Shield - James Boyer, Angus Demol and Liam Filmer-Ramsay Under 15 Weblin Shield - James Trickey Under 15 IDCA – Patrick Flakelar, Riley Thomas, Harris Rogers Under 16 Watson Shield/President's Cup - Cody Bruce and Arshdeep Virdi

Further into the season Arshdeep Virdi was also selected to play Green shield. Jake Carden and Nick Hidas went on to be selected in the Under13's Emerging Blues Program which commences at the end of July 2010.

As well as a productive representative season, players also had the opportunity to attend carnivals in Lismore, Ballina and Newcastle over the Christmas holidays. These carnivals are just one of a number of initiatives that have been introduced by the "new" MWJCA rep committee chaired by Ross Trewartha. Another new initiative was to hold the trials for the upcoming 2010/11 season at the end of the 09/10 season where the increase in player numbers across the MWJCA was even more apparent with record numbers of players attending. Two train-on squads have been selected in each age group with training sessions to commence at the end of July.

Mikaela Turik continues to hold the CPCC flag high in Women's Cricket circles. Among her achievements this season Mikaela captained the NSGCA U15 team for the CNSW DCA Margaret Peden Shield and has been selected for the U17's Emerging Breakers Squad. Mikaela is currently in Canada for training and games that will hopefully ultimately lead to qualification for the Women's World Cup in 2013.

Our second CPCC Junior “Tour” saw four CPCC teams head down to Canberra during the 2009 October school holidays to take part in the eight a side Twenty/20 Kookaburra Cup run by CricketACT. We never know quite what to expect weather-wise down in the Capital. After sweating it out in a 40° heat wave in 08 the 09 tour turned the thermostat down to freezing! What we can always expect though is quality cricket action and great socialising. The accommodation this time was at "Crestview" in Queanbeyan where thankfully our cabins were toasty warm with the heating cranked up to combat the below zero temps. The Indian fare at the nearby "Punjabi Hut" was also warm and well received. The 3rd Canberra tour is currently in the planning stages with a new accommodation venue locked in at "Capital Country Holiday Park" on the NSW/ACT border. We look forward to enjoying the excellent cricket and entertainment facilities that Canberra has to offer and will remember to pack for all climates!

The In2Cricket program for our newest club members moved to Plateau Park on Friday evenings. Over 30 eager youngsters aged from 4-7 registered for this activity based introduction to the skills of cricket. Thanks to Luke Arcus who helped run these sessions along with helpers from Under 13's "Power" team. As well as the Friday "twilight" activity sessions, players from this group - along with some of our Kanga and Under 9's players - were able to accept an offer from CricketNSW to take part in the on ground entertainment at the SCG test match in January. Reports were that this was a wonderful day for the players and their parents and an experience that will be remembered for years to come.

Our annual Father/Son/Daughter Australia day social match was back on again this year at Plateau Park. Two teams (24 players) played an enjoyable morning of cricket followed by a BBQ lunch. There were plenty of star moments including a hat-trick to Eli Cox from the Under 12's "Surge" team.

At the recent MWJCA presentation night CPCC featured prominently in the proceedings. The Under 12/1 "Surge" team were on hand to receive their Premier's trophies. Congratulations to Coach Bruce Forder and the team. A special mention to Arshdeep Virdi who took home the most prestigious award of the evening winning the Eric Palmer Award as the most outstanding player for MWJCA for season 2009-2010. CPCC boasted 5 individual Award winners on the night with trophies presented to:

In the wrap-up for season 2009/10 we had: 12/1 "Surge" finishing as Premiers 16/17 "Flash" and 13/1 "Power" finishing as runners-up 16/17 "Static" and 10/1 "Electrodes" finishing in 3rd position on their respective tables, along with some very commendable 33 Junior Secretary’s Report performances from our other teams.

Several of our 16/17's players along with some of our coaches, committee members and previous CPCC Juniors were victorious in the MWCA 7th Grade Grand Final. A huge congratulations to Mitch Curran (16/17's "Static" and Coach U9's "Megawatts"), Sam Cheeseman (16/17's "Static"), Matt Terry (15's)+, Nick Bonner (16/17's "Flash"), Dom Wheeler ( 16/17's 2008-09 and Coach 10/2 "Neutrons"), Jeff Porter-Dening (16/17's 2008-09), Angus Mackenzie (16/17's 2008-09), John "Jacko" Jackson (Coach U15's and Club Vice Pres) and their other team mates.

Once again we had a dedicated contingent of parent helpers and Senior Club players involved in coaching and managing our Saturday morning teams. Many others helped with scoring, training, and various other team duties. It is great to see some of our “older” Juniors now getting involved with the younger players. Special mention to Nathan Lange,. Mitchell Curran, Damon Twight and Matt Terry from Under 16/17’s who helped out with Under 9’s teams this season. Thanks also to former Juniors Matt Richards, Dom Wheeler, David Le and Jeff Porter-Dening who coached U15's, 10/2's and Kangas respectively.

Throughout the season we ran a few sausage sizzles in aid of the McGrath Foundation. Thank- you to all who supported these events - especially our Friday evening In2Cricket group. As a result we were able to send this worthy charity a cheque for $500. The presentation day raffle raised around $300 for our Club. Funds from raffles and REBEL MVP credits are greatly appreciated by the Club and go a long way to help finance the purchasing of new kits and gear for our Club members. Your support in these ventures is always appreciated.

CricketNSW actively encourages all coaches to take part in their coach education and accreditation program. A Level 1 coaching course was offered early in the season which some of our Plateau coaches were able to take advantage of. Many of our Plateau coaches have already attained Level 1 or 2 coaching certificates over the past few seasons. The provision of the new on-line Level 0 coaching certificate made it possible for ALL Plateau coaches to attain this minimum requirement. To reward our Club for 100% of team delegates completing the coaching requirements we were the recipients of a signed Speedblitz Blues Bat which has been framed and will be presented each season as one of our Junior perpetual trophies. The trophy is to be known as the Bert Elsworthy Trophy and will be awarded for the most catches taken in a season across the Junior competition. The inaugural winner of this award was Damon Steel from 13/1's with an impressive 16 catches for 09/10 - and he's not a keeper!

Other activities that kept us busy throughout the summer courtesy of CricketNSW were visits to ANZ Stadium to watch the Blues in the KFC Big Bash 20/20 matches, and the "Beach Cricket" activities at Dee Why Beach. These events were well attended by CPCC members with David Le, Steve and Michael King and their team taking home plenty of prizes from the day at the beach.

What a beautiful day we had once again for the final day's play and end of season picnic/presentation. It's always wonderful to see such a large contingent of club members gathered together at Clontarf Reserve to mark the closing of another season in the history of CPCC. A big "thank you" to all those that helped on the day with cooking the BBQ, collecting bread rolls and returning empty crates, collecting sausages, selling raffle tickets, picking up rubbish and many other useful tasks. Many thanks to Dave Allison for the provision of the sound system which made the announcements SO much better! Picnic day is always a fitting way to sign-off the cricket season and the accompanying summer. It’s also the day we farewell our “graduating” Juniors. This season we bid "adieu" to – Daniel McIntyre, Dylan Mazza, Austen Woods, Nick Bonner, Angus Mackenzie and Matt Bullivant. I'm sure you will hold happy memories of your Junior Cricket years at CPCC. We hope to still see you around the CPCC scene whether it be playing in our Senior's ranks in the afternoon competition or trying your hand at coaching.

To those of you backing-up again next season it's not long until the days start to get longer and warmer and before we know it season 2010/11 will be underway.....

At the commencement of pre-season training half of our players had not even met the other half. Therefore ,it is to their great credit that they evolved into such a wonderful team. The way they celebrated each other's many successes and supported one another after rare disappointments was highly impressive.

The excellent bowling deserved the outstanding efforts they received from their team mates in the field. On the rare occasions when our formidable top order batting failed, there was always a significant contribution from our late middle order to steer us out of any trouble. The result of this commitment to each other was a brilliant season in which we were undefeated. This included a crushing win over the eventual premiers.

Congratulations to the entire team and thank-you for the support from a great parental crew.

This season brought a mixture of highs and lows, with the lows being events out of the teams’ control which unfortunately cost us a few possible victories. Focusing on the highs, we creditably finished a very respectable 3rd position with 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 no result from our 9 matches. A remarkable effort considering 9 of our squad of 13 players were still eligible to play in the under 15’s age group!

There were two main individual highlights of this season. A magnificent 150 not out to our premier batsman, Cody Bruce saw him re- write the local record books with his knock being a new association batting high score record. This season also saw Mikaela Turik make her International Debut for the Canadian Women’s Cricket Team, playing several One Day International matches in the West Indies and perform exceeding well.

It is gratifying to see the team continue to enjoy their cricket camaraderie after being a formidable team for so many years together as a unit. We have had very few changes to this team over time and are looking forward to continuing this tradition into next year, so as we can have a real crack at the title. Over the many years together, the team has enjoyed marvellous parental support and again this year we had our annual parents’ night out at our favourite Thai restaurant which was enjoyed by all.

I would like to express my appreciation for all of the support and encouragement given to me again this year. Special thanks to Greg Bruce for being a great team manager. Thanks also to Peter Clements for your invaluable assistance at our training sessions, David Turik for your much appreciated contribution in sharing the umpiring duties, and in doing so, giving my legs a much needed rest. You guys all make my job so much more enjoyable and easy.

Looking forward with great anticipation to next season! Glenn Shaw - Coach

The Under 15 MWJCA competition this season was a 10 team competition. For the fifth year in succession the competition was won by a Peninsula side. At our best we were competitive with all sides and we finished fourth. We played with a regular squad of 11 only. Thanks to the U16/17 teams who helped us out by lending eligible players throughout the season as required.

Our squad was made up of new members Mathew Terry and Lachlan Duncan and regulars Lachlan Simpson (capt.), Cameron Baber, Ryan Bishop-Perrett, Thomas Cains, Billy Evers, Callum Gracie, Todd Jacobs, Travers Keirle, Kesh Ratnavabushena.

We routinely bowled most players in an innings and our attack showed good depth. Every player chipped in with the ball at some stage of the season. Lachlan bowled with good pace and showed an ability to move the ball. He destroyed Wakehurst with a 5-for. Ryan was a very useful support opener. When he had rhythm Todd bowled with good pace and direction. Thomas changed to off spin and showed promise bowling a great spell against Peninsula. Callum bowled cleverly attacking the stumps with movement.

Our batting revolved around Matt Terry. He was our best batter and set up our batting innings. Travers played several good support innings up the order in the second half of the season. Cameron continued to perform well as an aggressive middle order batter. Lachlan found form with the bat this season and played a number of aggressive innings in the middle order. Kesh, Thomas, Billy and Ryan showed improved and solid batting technique which should translate to higher scores with increased physical power and confidence.

Our best performance was a very close match against the Peninsula side. An excellent display of bowling and fielding dismissed peninsula for 104. Unfortunately we fell one run short in the run chase. It is pleasing to see a team lift their performance against tough opposition.

Thanks to Matt Richards for co-coaching the side. Thanks also to the loyal band of followers who supported the team on Saturday mornings through the season. In particular, thanks to Louise Baber for her management duties. Hope to see you back at the club next year in the U16/17's. It would be good to see some players joining Matt Terry in the 7th grade development team cricket on Saturday afternoons. John Jackson - Coach

An eventful season, started with a tie in game 1 against a strong Wakehurst team, before 3 straight losses. The team then came from the clouds to win 2 in a row before Christmas and followed up with 3 from 4 after the break, including knocking off both St Augustines teams in consecutive matches. The team boasts a number of rep players and a large slice of ability. Most rep players contributed match-winning performances at various times, however the team relied on all players to produce exciting cricket to win matches.

Some highlights from the season; Game 1 v Wakehurst; - Ross Bacon (27) and Sam Filmer-Ramsay(37) opening stand of 66. Jordy Hammond .... swung the ball like the great Bob Massie to rout the Wakehurst middle order, finishing with 4 for 28, including some genuine nicks to slips...well caught by Harry Rogers. Patrick Flakelar under the final catch with the scores tied...well caught Patrick ! Game 3 v St Augustines Green; - Harry Rogers magnificent 6-26 including 5 bowled, Nick Dennis 17, Max Hinchcliff 27 but it is to no avail.....we lose. Game 5 v Harbord; - Angus Demol 40no and Patrick Flakelar 31no, come together at 9-99, and carry us past 131 for victory.....Plateau Park erupts, crazy scenes at the home of cricket Game 6 v Cromer; - Zach Trewartha 58, Liam Filmer Ramsay 48, Patrick Flakelar 37 set us up with 205. Cromer look likely winners at 7 down needing another 15 runs. Patrick Flakelar takes a sensational hatrick (all bowled) to finish the game with a match-winning 5-25. Game 9 v St Ausgustines Gold; - we hold the 3 year undefeated champions to 226 all out. Liam Filmer-Ramsay (25) and Angus Demol (27) as openers set us on the chase with a 41 opening stand. All batsmen make contributions and at 4-94 with 25 overs left we need 5 an over. Sam Filmer-Ramsay (18) and Patrick Flakelar (21) along with Zach Trewartha take the attack to the champs. The run rate remains at 6 an over as the last 5 overs commence at 11.45. A flurry of shots, and generally cool headed batting ensued, but as the final over commences at 12.05pm we need 6 for victory. Zach Trewartha lifts the second last ball of the match into the outfield for 2 to finish with a magnificent 75no at 12.10pm !!....crowd goes wild, Collaroy players and supporters rush everywhere, another stunning victory. Game 10 v St Augustines Green; - Jordy Hammond does it again! ..wrecking the opposition (4-16), Patrick Flakelar once again bowls at express pace (4-19), and Josh McMahon bags his first wicket, to leave us chasing 126. Reeling at 6-16 Josh McMahon (35)and Harry Rogers embark on a 75 run stand, before Ariel Norris gets her highest score of the season. Harry goes on to 81no as we smack ‘em everywhere reaching 197. Emily Carden and Liam Filmer-Ramsay steam in with the new ball to have them on the rack at 2-0 in search of an unlikely outright..alas we have to settle for 1st innings win. Game 11 – Last game v Peninsula; - Peninsula spend 50 overs over 143, half of which are sundries (kids minds on winter sport maybe ?), Max Hinchcliffe (2-5), Josh McMahon (2-18). Harry Rogers continues his rich vein of form dispatching the bowling to all parts for 56no and with Angus Demol (33), have us cruising. A flurry of wickets gives them some hope before Nick Dennis and Sam Filmer- Ramsay put it beyond doubt, to finish the season with a bang.

Thanks to all players for playing in the right spirit, enthusiastically supporting each other, especially at training, training hard(?), having a go, and showing what they can do. As a team and individually, you all improved noticeably over the course of the season. Thank s to Rad Hammond for her non-stop enthusiasm and dedication, and for all the organisation of everything off the field...all the stuff I hate doing. You’re a champion Rad. To Geoff Rogers, Jim Ramsay and Neil Hinchcliffe, thanks for umpiring and generally keeping the team on fire and on target while out there in the middle with them. To all the parents who scored, photographed, put out boundaries, bought coffee and generally chatted away Saturday mornings, thanks for helping make it an enjoyable season for all.

38 Junior Team Reports UNDER 14/1 ‘Storm’

Another enjoyable season for the Under 14 "Storm" team. Even though our match results didn't reflect it, the boys still showed consistent effort all over the park.

Our bowling was strong with Darcy Munce (4/32 v PCC Round 3), Giles Devaney (3/30 v PCC Rd 10, David Dwyer (3/46 v CCC Round 5), Riley Thomas (4/41 v CCC Round 5) and Aaron Good (4/13 v St Augustine's Green Round 2) all showing promising performances.

Our batting let us down a little, but overall 2009/2010 was a good season. David Dwyer with 250 for the season and a high score of 71 was the standout with the bat.

Good efforts across the board from James Boyer, Jake Jenkins, Ben Lyon, Dean Meadows, Dylan Moss, Rhayn Stewart, Kayin Walker, Ben Wickham and Matt Wickham rounded out our season.

Special thanks to our Umpire Kevin Munce and Scorer Bruce Wickham.

39 Junior Team Reports UNDER 13/1 ‘Power’

What a fantastic season of cricket by a side that just keeps on improving all the time. We started with 2 wins, then had 2 losses and then won 7 straight games defeating every team in the competition to finish a very close 2nd position. In our 2 losses, we were outplayed by the PCC Sea Spiders in the first one and probably lost the game at the toss against the PCC Pirahnas on an extremely hot morning at a dry Griffith Park. We batted 2nd in 8 matches and won 6 of them. Batted 1st 3 times and won all 3! This season we beat Wakehurst twice and PCC Sea Spiders once, teams we have previously not beaten. I think this shows how much the guys have improved. I believe a major part of this improvement is due to how well the boys all play together as a team. We batted patiently when chasing runs and we set strong offside fields and bowled to them. Take into account that all this was achieved with 4 players each missing some part of the season with broken bones. I’d like to congratulate the boys for their selection of Jake and Damon as Captain and Vice Captain at the start of the season. I think the guys not only did an excellent job tactically but also set an example to the rest of the team with the way they played

Season highlights: Matt Allen - First full season of cricket. Best bowling 3/15, batting partnerships of 48 with Daniel v St Augustines, 35 again with Daniel v the Piranhas and a good partnership with Jay batting the final 8 overs v Wakehurst. Also fielded with lots of energy and was keen to learn and always listened Glyn Archer - Scored his top score v Harbord in the 1st game with 36 and had partnerships of 44 with Chris and 52 with Wyatt during this innings, then scored 23 against Wakehurst in a partnership of 38 with Damon. Bowled superbly, particularly against the Sea Spiders taking 2/1. His season figures were 5/106 off 51 overs His bowling economy was second only to Jake. Glyn was also part of the MWJCA Cawsey Shield rep team and played some very good cricket during the rep seas he has made the U13 rep squad again for the coming season. Max Bertock - Scored 10no in an entertaining partnership with Wyatt at the end of the 1st game against Harbord. Came to the crease against Wakehurst with 22 runs needed to win and combined with Jake for 12 of them and then Damon for the rest before hitting the winning runs with 1 ball remaining. Came to crease with the score at 6/36 against St Augustines in the 21st over and was out in the 39th over with the score at 73 Also had some very good bowling figures with 1/5 v Harbord, 1/6 v St Augustines and 1/7 v Piranhas Matt Brock - Unfortunately for Matt he missed all but one week in the second half of the season with a broken arm. Had a top score of 18 against the Sea Spiders when he came to the crease with the score on 69 and was the last man out with the score on 136. Followed this with 16 against the Piranhas. Bowled beautifully at Plateau Park against St Augustines when we were defending only 75, with figures of 2/17. He made the MWJCA Cawsey Shield rep team where he scored his first half century in an innings against Hornsby and also took 5 wickets in a match against Hawkesbury. Matt was also nominated to try out for the U13 Emerging Blues, however was unable to due to the removal of his appendix. Has made the U13 rep squad for the coming season Jake Carden - Scored 278 runs for the season with scores of 54 v’s Wakehurst which included an 87 run partnership with Damon, 52no v’s Harbord, 38 against Wakehurst, 37 against the Sea Spiders in which he struck the teams only 6 of the season, and 30 against the Piranhas He was at the crease batting when we chased down 3 totals in a row against Wakehurst, Sea Spiders and Piranhas Took season figures of 21/88 off 65 overs which included figures of 4/10, 4/13, 3/16, 3/6 and 3/5. 16 of his 21 wickets were bowled. Jake was part of the MWJCA Cawsey shield rep team which he also captained and scored a very good 60 odd in one game. Has again made the U13 rep squad and has also been selected for the U13 Emerging Blues squad Wyatt Crawley - Got his highest score ever in the 1st game against Harbord with 22no. Followed this with a 16 against St Augustines which included a 40 run partnership with Daniel. The running between the wickets between Wyatt and Daniel was probably the best I’d seen since we started traditional cricket. A good partnership of 40 with Michael in the final game against Harbord. More often than not opened the bowling and took 13 wickets for the season with best figures of 3/11, 3/10 and 2/10. Fielding highlight was 2 catches in the gully at Plateau Park against St Augustines off the bowling of Matt Brock which went along way to defending our score of only 75. Charlie Jormanainen - Missed the first 2 games of the season so got off to a bit of a slow start. Had a good partnership of 16 with Jake at Griffith Park against Wakehurst and the way he batted in the nets in the last month of the season indicates to me that he will get runs next season. Bowled well against Harbord in the one dayer when only 4 runs came off his 3 overs. Took 2 great catches against Harbord with the second one getting Damon his hatrick. Michael King - First season with the club and a very good one it was. Started off the season with his highest score 44 against Harbord which included a fantastic 84 run partnership with Chris. Scored a very good 28 against the Sea Spiders including a 42 run partnership with Matt Brock before getting out to a great catch. Had an excellent partnership with Jake of 36 against the Piranhas before getting out just before the winning runs were scored. Bowled with good variation and consistently troubled the batsman taking 10 wickets for the season including figures of 2/6 and 2/3 against Harbord dismissing both openers. Also took 2 fantastic catches at 1st slip off Glyn’s bowling. Has made the U14 rep squad for the coming season Chris Lawson Started off the season in fine style scoring our teams individual highest score of 60no against Harbord which included that very good parrtnership with Michael of 84. In this game Chris came to the crease when the score was 68 and he eventually retired when the score was 224. Also batted well against Wakehurst at Griffith Park in a partnership of 21 with Damon. Took 5 wickets for the season with his bowling with 2/17 and 2/11 against the Piranhas. He also dismissed one of the best batsman in the competition against the Sea Spiders at Beverley job Again he did a very good job keeping for us. Chris has also made the Manly U14 rep squad Jay McDougal - Always difficult to join a new team especially when you haven’t played a lot of cricket, but I think Jay handled it very well. Really good innings against Wakehurst at Griffith park when he came to the crease with the score at 151 in the 37th over and was still there not out after 50 overs with the score on 191. Followed this with a 4no against the competitions 2nd best bowling attack in the Sea Spiders. Had one of the best strike rates with his bowling taking 5/65 for the season with best figures of 2/12against Wakehurst. Took a very good catch in the covers against Harbord straight after spending a good deal of time practicing on the crazy catch. Sean McFarlane - Not one of our fastest scorers however he makes up for this with his patience and his determination to occupy the crease. Had an opening partnership with Damon of 20 in the first game. Came in when the score was on 95 and was not out when we hit the winning runs 116 against St Augustines. Hit a four at Plateau Park against St Augustines, One of only 2 boundaries in the teams innings. Was part of a wonderful opening partnership with Damon where they put on 40 and both retired setting up our win against the Piranhas on a very slow ground. Bowling is improving all the time as he picks up pace with best figures of 1/2 and 1/7 In the field again he was always prepared to put his body on the line to stop the ball Daniel Priest - After missing the first game, opened the innings against St Augustines and scored his second career half century with a score of 56no that included 9 boundaries. When he retired after 15 overs the score was on 91 which put us in complete control of the game. Scored 33 against the Piranhas, 27 against Wakehurst and had a very good partnership with Jake scoring 21 against the Piranhas in the 2nd round which placed us in a winning position. Bowled well against St Augustines at Plateau Park where he took 3/16 when we defended 75, and in most games took a wicket. Excellent in the field where he took 8 catches and was involved in 3 run outs,1 memorable one at Plateau park chasing after the ball at 120% and throwing it into Damon straight over the stumps. Damon Steel - Great season all round particularly with the ba.t Opened in 7 innings and retired in 6 of them. That is a lot of time at the crease. Had scores of 36no against Harbord, 35no against Wakehurst, 34no against the Sea Spiders including a 53 run partnership with Jake. A thoroughly deserved 1st half century of 54no against Wakehurst which included an 84 run partnership with Jake and finally

40 Junior Team Reports 26no against the Piranhas in that great opening stand with Sean Best bowling figures were 1/4 in 6 overs against St Augustines when we were defending only 75, 2/2 in the great win against the Sea Spiders and 3/6 including a hatrick in the last game against Harbord. He was sensational in the field taking an amazing 15 catches with the pick of them being one at Beverley Job taking it one handed over his head while moving backwards .Damon has also made the Manly U14 rep squad for the coming season

I would like to thank all our parents who provide wonderful support to our team, in particular Rob, Tony, Rick, Graham and Martin for coaching assistance, umpiring and scoring and also to all the coffee mums.

UNDER 12/1 ‘Force’

Let's start by saying "thank you' to everyone involved in our team”. To all of our players, the parents who come and watch and help score, umpire etc. A BIG "thanks" to Karen Brock our fantastic manager and also thanks to Vicki and all the other people involved from the club - Thanks guys.

It is a pleasure to train and help this group of boys with their cricket. We had some highs and a few lows, but we were competitive in all games and played some very good cricket. We ended the season midfield on the competition ladder, but could have finished much higher seeing we lost 4 of our games by 1 wicket or under 10 runs.

The first match was the highlight of the season for me. We made over 300 runs against the other CPCC 12/1 team but unfortunately lost the game by 1 run. Boys cricket is a game that you must fight hard to the last ball or the last run,and play well for both Saturdays of the match. Our player awards were: Batting Abhijeet Virdi Bowling Harrison Brock Allrounder Aaron Stevens

We also had 3 boys play rep cricket for Manly Warringah: Ellis Raymond, Jack Pickering and Aaron Stevens. Well done boys. All our players had a turn batting, bowling and keeping, but soon you will be coming to the age where you will look at your game and decide the spot that you like to play, both in the field and in the batting order and the type of bowling you like to try.

There were many highlights, some great bowling, big hits, some great catches and also some funny misses, but we came off the field with a smile and always gave of our best. WELL DONE BOYS. Congratulations to the CPCC "Surge" team who won the Competition !!!

Hope to see you all again next season, enjoy yourselves and walk in with the bowler boys. Cheers Darryl Stevens - Coach

43 Junior Team Reports UNDER 12-1 ‘Surge’

A great year by the U12 Surge boys finishing top of the competition after losing only one game all season. The team is improving every year and has become a very tight unit who have all contributed to the teams overall performance. Our season started off with the interclub derby between the two CPCC teams "Force" and "Surge", which will probably go down as one of the most memorable games in junior club history. The match ended with a one run victory to "Surge" in a game that included 623 runs in total, a century and five 50+ scores - a truly impressive performance from both teams.

Following on from this start the team had a win against Peninsular and a loss to Forest. The loss to Forest was a great lesson as our team had a far superior run rate but lost our wickets without using the allocated 50 overs. From this minor setback the boys went from strength to strength as they wrapped up their first outright win against Cromer and finally a win against Harbord before the Christmas break.

After the Christmas holidays the team really hit their straps with wins against CPCC Force and St Augustines in one day matches and then two consecutive outright wins -the first against Peninsular and then to exact revenge against Forest. Our last game of the year was against the second placed Wakehurst in a top of the table clash which the Surge won. The improvement in all the boys this year has been great to watch and many of the team have been rewarded with representative duties.

We welcomed the arrival of two new players to the team this year in Nick Hidas and Declan Price who both fitted in well. Nick went on to become our team and the club's best batter and was rewarded for a great season with the "Don Leech" most outstanding Junior Batsman perpetual trophy. Nick has also been selected for the U13's train on squad for the NSW Emerging Blues.

Other special mentions from the team were Isaiah Vumbaca (team bowling award) and Joel Wood (team all -rounder award) who both had tremendous seasons and excelled in all forms of the game. Also to Tim Forder who won the team's most improved bowling award and Nick Parker who took the second highest wicket keeping catches in the competition. Fine efforts also all season from Umar Ali, Eli Cox, Daniel Ferriera, Jack Fontes, Matthew Lawson, Nathan Logan and Kieren Nixon who all contributed to our eventual Premiership!

All in all a year to remember and congratulations to the whole team for a great year. Thanks especially to Roy, Sheree and all the parents for their help during the year. Bruce Forder – Coach

44 Junior Team Reports UNDER 10/1 ‘Electrons’

Well the 2009/2010 season has come and gone and the Under 10/1 "Electrons" enjoyed a rewarding season in dealing with a hard ball for the first time.

With several players from the past few years required to move up an age group and some new blood, the "Electrons" blended all aspects of the game and achieved an overall good display of batting, bowling and fielding.

Congratulations goes to all the team but especially to Sam Papandrea for achieving the team Bowling Award , Hayden Brown for achieving the team Batting Award and to Christian Loone for his continued improvement in batting and bowling and thereby achieving the team Most Improved award. Might I say, these boys achieved this only due to the team support around them.

Thanks goes to my manager Sue Mazza for the help in conducting a well run side. To the Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparent who turned up each week and like me, enjoyed the skill delivered each week and helped out with some umpiring and scoring , "thank- you" very much . This allowed you as parents to see how much your child developed through the season.

Congratulations boys, your achievement was perfect in all aspects of the game of cricket and it was my pleasure to coach you through the year. Well done!

UNDER 10/1 ‘Electrodes ’

It has once again been a fantastic year for the almighty Under 9s “Electrodes”. The season started with a mixture of old buddies joining a whole host of new friends, some of which were taking up cricket for the very first time.

The first training session was filled with great enthusiasm and many on the sidelines could sense that this team was going to accomplish some fantastic things throughout the season. New bats, pads and gloves, glistening cricket balls and the smell of freshly cut grass was a clear sign that cricket had returned for another year.

The bowlers steamed in with great vigour, batsmen were ducking and weaving, thank goodness for those helmets. The batsmen themselves were playing some of the most glorious shots. Cover drives, hooks, cut shots, you name it and the kids were playing it. The Don himself would have been looking down with a smile. The next generation of Australian cricketers were making a great statement to the coaching staff, everyone was eager to get selected for the starting line up.

The enthusiasm of the kids, coupled by the thousands of screaming spectators in the opening game saw the Electrodes pull off a memorable win for the grand old Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club. Great stroke play, sensational fielding and lightening fast bowling, which terrorised opposing batsmen, had the crowd in raptures. It truly was one of the team’s defining moments that helped to set up that entire season.

That wonderful spirit in the opening game was carried throughout the entire season. The team smashed its previous season’s results by winning most of its games and losing 3 by the slightest of margins. The boys should be extremely pleased with their efforts. Well done guys, your willingness to listen and learn helped you all achieve some sensational things.

A special thankyou to Andrew Logan for organising the team. To the parents for your ongoing support, the kids truly enjoyed having you all attend the games. They each grew an extra 3 feet every time you yelled out enthusiasm and encouraged them to strive for that extra effort.

As coach, I am particularly pleased to see the boys enjoy themselves and for them to love their cricket. I am sure that there will be some lifelong friends forged which will be a fantastic reflection of just how well the Electrodes have bonded this year. To see them develop into fine cricketers is a great way to round off the season.

46 Junior Team Reports UNDER 10/2 ‘Neutrons’

2009/10 was not the most successful season for the Under 10 ‘Neutrons’ team, but it was an extremely enjoyable and fun one to be a part of none the less. Every single one of the boys showed amazing improvement from our very first training session together, and were all keen to keep learning and developing their skills right throughout the season.

The batting, bowling, fielding, running and general team spirit all showed marked improvement from the beginning to the end of the season, culminating in a dominant team performance to produce our first win after months of hard work each and every week at training. I was so glad to finally be able to answer “YES!” when asked for the 10th time “Did we win?”, and the celebration that ensued was great to witness.

The bowling award this year could go to no-one else other than Otto Schultz, who consistently sent down his little outswingers on a perfect line and length, regularly chipping in with a wicket when it was needed. Alex Mayo picked up the batting award after some superb knocks at the back end of the season, putting a very high price on his wicket and regularly finding the boundary rope to keep the score ticking. Aaro Lahtinen also displayed great consistency in both his batting and bowling all year, picking up 2 wickets and producing the match-winning partnership with Luke Webber in the second last game of the season, earning him the all-rounder award. Thanks must go to all the parents who helped out both at training and at the matches all year, in particular Marjut Lahtinen for putting her hand up to be manager this year.

Finally thanks to all the boys for being so enthusiastic and eager to learn all the way through the season, without your commitment we would not have had nearly as much fun. It was great to see each and every one of them develop into fine young cricketers and I look forward to working with you all again next season. Dom Wheeler Coach

UNDER 9 ‘Megawatts’

The “Megawatts” were a new team this season with the majority of the team playing cricket for the first time. All of the boys were ready to learn and kick off their cricket careers. They were enthusiastic, boisterous, eager and ready to give it a go every week. The wins the boys had during the season certainly kept them going. Regardless of a win or loss, the boys all gave the best of their ability in each game and had fun doing it.

Each player improved enormously throughout the season under the dedicated coaching of Mitchell Curran and Nathan Lange (from Under 16/17's). Both coaches had a fantastic influence over this group of boys. Thanks so much for volunteering and helping the boys to improve in all aspects of their cricket.

Thanks also to the many parents who helped out with scoring, umpiring and warming the boys up. A particular thank you to Jenny Fontes for her wonderful organisation and Greg Alexander for umpiring each week.

48 Junior Team Reports UNDER 9 ‘Kilowatts’

Well the Under 9 Kilowatts had an amazing year and were certainly the huge improvers in the competition. With half the kids playing one year up out of their age group, it appeared a big mountain would need to be climbed. However the boys got stuck into their training and really improved, to the point that they were very competitive in the later half of the year winning many of their games.

The boys were well supported by their Mums and Dads who showed much involvement and support at both training and on game day. Thanks especially to Grant Westbury for all his help throughout the year. The boys were also very lucky to have Adam Crosthwaite (Manly 1st Grade Captain) and future NSW cricketer / Australian prospect to come along and coach them several times through out the year. That was a huge thrill for the boys.

So here were the highlights:

Tom Trevaskis – Batting award for some great hitting and lots of 4s and 6s. Most runs for the year. Harry Ireland – Bowling award – Had many games where he took 2-3 wickets in an over. Most wickets for the year. Patrick Mace – Fielding award for his dedication in the field. Most catches and run outs for the year. Billy Barwell – had a great year with both Bat and ball and will blossom next year. Jordan (Wiggly) Porter – very unlucky not to win the fielding award but also had a great year with his batting. Nick Taylor – second up in the fielding stakes for some amazing run outs and catches and had a great year all round with bat and ball. Nick Baber – most improved bowler in the team and really started to get some pace up by the end of the year. Cooper Westbury – most improved all round cricketer. His batting and bowling were amazing by the end of the year. A definite opening batsmen for the future. Ben Harris – one of the most improved batsmen who has a great technique and desire for the game. Michael Werner – possibly the best all rounder in the team. Good batting, bowling and fielding. Michael Ryan – Michael had a great year with the bat and after a slow start proved to be the biggest hitter in our team when he got hold of it.

All round it was a great year and the kids not only enjoyed, but really improved and I was very proud of all of them. Thanks as always to the amazing Vicki Carden for all her amazing work around the club. What an amazing woman and an incredible asset to the Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club.

Kind regards Michael Trevaskis Coach

49 Junior Team Reports UNDER 9 ‘Gigawatts’

Well what a team! Busting with so much energy and enthusiasm, getting them to focus was sometimes a challenge but they all CPCC welcomed the "Gigawatts" as a new team at CPCC this season. Some of the team having played Kangas for Harbord previously joined forces with a new group of friends to move into the Under 9's competition.

Damon Twight from the Under 16/17's "Static" team donated his time to coach the boys at their afternoon training sessions, assisted by Matt Terry (under 15's). The input of our more "Senior" Juniors is much appreciated by the younger members of the Club.

The team was ably managed and organised by Michele and Ivan Satalic, with many of the Dad's stepping in to umpire/coach on Saturday mornings.

By all reports an enjoyable season was had by all.

KANGA ‘Thunderbolts’

We had a big team of 12 this year, and what a team it was! They were all keen and enthusiastic and only once were we down to 10 players on the day. Our allocated reserves often made up the numbers on the opposing teams, on one occasion delighting in thrashing their mates. With great weather we played every week and only missed one training session.

The team all improved through the season, particularly in fielding and catching, finishing with a powerful performance in their last match. While the bowling was sometimes variable, all players took wickets and were capable of good line and length. The batting entertained the gallery and everyone scored boundaries. There were many notable highlights, like Riley Ward holding a sizzling catch at square leg, Sam Wallis’s mighty birthday innings, Marina Davies taking 3 wickets in 4 balls, and Charlie Woodman’s catch and 3 sixes in the second last match. Tom Shepherd’s nonchalant boundaries down the leg side were a delight and Josh Sauer was also strong on the leg side with a number of boundaries. Luke Morris played some classic cover drives and was the only player to score consistently on the off side. Archie Viesis, a real team player, was consistent all round taking 3 wickets in 2 overs and always batting well. Max Drewe’s enthusiasm and excitement on his first wicket were great to see and Brock Dose improved all round, running well and taking some valuable wickets. Hudson Hurt smashed a mighty 6 over the gallery and out of the ground and Kai Davies did the same to a bowler who was on a hat trick.

Many thanks to our manager Bronwyn Morris, our scorers, and all the supportive parents, and relatives who assisted through the year, helped at training, cheered the boys on, and provided after match refreshments. The team had as many wins as losses, were always trying hard and showed good sportsmanship.

The season was a lot of fun and I hope the team will back up for another run next summer. Peter Davies Coach

51 Junior Team Reports KANGA ‘Sparks’

The "newest" CPCC team with all players in the team playing their first ever Saturday morning cricket competition. Club stalwart Dave Quarford came out of coaching retirement to run the team through their paces at training each Thursday afternoon. Many of the Dad's took their turn as Umpire and/or coach at Saturday games. Philippa Kinstler-Smith kept things running smoothly by wearing the manager's hat.

The team certainly kept the spectators entertained at games with their improvement in cricket skills as the season progressed, some interesting variations on running between wickets and all the other antics that go hand in hand with 6 and 7 year olds playing cricket! We are sure the "Sparks" enjoyed their first summer of cricket and hope to see them back for many seasons to come.

52 Junior Team Reports KANGA ‘Lightning’

The boys had a fantastic season of cricket. It was the first season for many of the boys.

They gelled as a team very quickly and although it was a small team they came out on top more often than not.

The boys developed their skills throughout the season with all boys getting the grasp of core bowling and batting skills. They all had great fun and are looking forward to the next season.

Thanks to David Le and Jeff Porter-Dening for working with the team at training.

Graeme Faulkner – Saturday Coach

This season Jeff and I had the privilege of training the Kanga “Lightning” team on Thursday afternoons. We aimed to help them improve and develop their cricket skills while at the same time making it fun and enabling them to enjoy their cricket. The boys came to training every week looking to improve on their game but also to work together as a team. Overall each boy improved on his cricketing skills quite dramatically throughout the season with great Saturday morning results.

I would like to thank Graeme for helping out with the boys preparation before the game on Saturday mornings. Also lastly thanks to the parents who come to training and the Saturday morning games to watch and support their sons. All the boys had a great season and I'm hoping that all of them will be cricket stars in the future.

MILO in2CRICKET

MILO in2CRICKET is Australia’s national junior development program for boys and girls not yet involved in under age cricket competition. The program incorporates high participation with skill development. The program runs over 8-12 weeks, with sessions running between 60-90mins. Whilst the aim of the program is for children to develop their skills, there is always an emphasis on fun and enjoying cricket. All the equipment used is designed for young children and is safe and easy to use. Each child receives a Give-Away pack that includes a bat, ball, bag, hat, t-shirt, cd-rom and a few other promotional items. The re commended cost of the program is $50. MILO in2CRICKET is the first step in a child's long term involvement in the game of cricket. A MILO in2CRICKET centre will be linked to a junior cricket club and will lead into underage competitions.

Contact Vicki Carden for more information on CPCC participation.
