PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It only seems that it was last month I was doing this same report for season 2003-04. Time seems to march by so quickly nowadays, and yet in the past twelve months Normanhurst CC has achieved so much. You should be proud of the achievements of our club, particularly all those that have been involved in the club’s committee over the past 5 years. During this period, we set ourselves targets and implemented time lines in which to achieve certain objectives. Successes have included: • Aiming to have an A Grade Normo team in 5 years – this was achieved in 4. • Wanting to grow our junior numbers in the 5-7 year old age group – this year we saw numbers grow from 23 to 51 in our new Have a Go program (formerly Kanga cricket) – thanks Rocco and Tim. • Plans to introduce club playing shirts for all age groups – it took a while but this year we did it ! • Seeking a major sponsor to assist in the growth of Normo CC – it’s been fantastic having the support of Pennant Hills Bowling Club. • Facilitating the transition of our junior players into senior cricket – this has been increasing every year. This year saw the average age of the club’s committee fall from 40 years to around 30, which is fantastic. It was great to have Rob Darling and Cameron Riddett back, but with the inclusion of Rocco Giaquinto and Rob Magrath, the future of the club looks secure with these young guys soon to be in the driving seat. Many thanks must also go to Jaye Waldegrave who again completed the difficult task of Registrar. Tim Grigg whose wit and enthusiasm for the young kids in Have a Go was priceless. John Kerr who can now do the equipment job in his sleep. Nigel Lazarus, who did a sterling job administering the most envied website in the association and lastly, Bruce Wood, whose enthusiasm for the game, our club, and the boys he coaches is unbelievable. Bruce will be leaving the committee this year and I’d like to thank him for all his efforts over the many years of his involvement – Bruce, your contributions will be sorely missed. To the future – as a committee we are hoping the club continues in its growth in numbers and successes on the field. Challenges ahead for us include next year having all players kitted out in a NCC cap or hat – they’ll look great with the players’ club shirts, and within two years having the nets at Normanhurst Oval increased from two to three, along with the concreting of the bowlers’ run-ups to replace the current clay surface. And to all us old guys out there, fielding a Masters team (over 40’s) in season 2006-07. The above will only be made possible with the assistance of you, the parents and senior players, being willing to get involved in the running of the club. If you feel you can be of assistance in any way possible, however small that assistance might appear, you’ll be welcomed aboard with open arms. Finally, to all the coaches, managers, scorers, umpires and supportive parents, grandparents and friends – thank you so much for your help. I’m sure you get the same joy as I do seeing your kids, and the ones you are supporting, developing their love of such a unique game that cricket is. As a club, I hope that we continue to be the “club of choice” for those that live within our local area. Please enjoy the evening. Anthony Maxworthy

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT ON THE JUNIORS NCC fielded 11 junior boys teams and an expanded Have a Go squad in 2004-05 – the same number of boys teams as last season, although more players registered this year. We had one U/9 (Ave.), two U/10 (Limited), two U/11, two U/13, two U/14, U15 & U/16, ie. we had at least one team in every age group except the U/12’s. All the teams performed well and enjoyed their cricket while developing their skills. A special thank you to all the Coaches, Managers, scorers and other assistants for the hard work and commitment they have shown to make it all possible for the boys. I would particularly like to thank Tim Grigg, our Have a Go Co-ordinator, for organising a keen group of approximately 50 youngsters each week, more than twice as many as we had in last year’s Kanga squad. Tim had a number of willing assistant coaches, as mentioned in his report. The future looks bright for NCC with the number of talented players coming through the juniors. Our U/9 and U/10 (non-competitive) teams did well this season and are looking forward to playing ‘hard-ball’ cricket in the next year or two. Our U/13 Lehmann team had a good season, finishing a very creditable 6th out of 18 teams, despite having many under-age (U/12) players in the team. Our U/15 McGrath team showed much improved form, coming from equal last in 2003-04 to qualifying for the Semis in 3rd place this season. The highlight of the season was seeing two NCC teams, U/11 MacGill and U/14 Gilchrist, completing undefeated seasons and convincingly winning their respective Grand Finals. This was the first time in our long history that two NCC junior teams had won a Premiership in the same season. It was also our first ever U/11 and U/14 Premierships – NCC had won only 4 junior titles prior to this season, two U/12’s and two U/13’s. The performance of the U/11 MacGill team deserves special mention as they had six under-age (U/10) players. The U/14 Gilchrist boys became the first junior team in NCC history to win back-to-back Premierships, having won the U/13 title last year. This team has been undefeated since the U/12’s and is arguably the strongest junior team in NCC’s history. This season the Gilchrist team scored 2,356 runs in 11 matches – an average of 214 runs per innings or 34 runs per lost. By comparison, their opponents lost 123 for 1,189 runs, which equates to 108 runs per match (sometimes in two innings) or 9.6 runs per wicket. They thrashed WPH-C Red in the Final by 210 runs (7/269 to 59). I have had the pleasure of coaching the majority of these boys since the U/11’s and it has been very satisfying watching them develop their skills and enjoy playing attacking cricket. The Gilchrist team will skip the U/15’s next season and play in the more challenging U/16 club competition. Chris Aldersley (U/14 Gilchrist) scored 336 runs (average 67.2) and took 24 wickets to win his second NCC Junior Cricketer-of-the-Year award. Other outstanding performances included Tom Cole (U/14 Waugh) who scored 364 runs (average 33.1) and took 24 wickets, and his brother Josh Cole (U/13 Lehmann) who scored 366 runs at the incredible average of 91.5. Stephen Smith (U/15 McGrath) performed superbly with the bat, scoring 399 runs @ 57.0 average, and Lachlan Ford (U/11 MacGill) scored 253 runs @ 36.1 average and took 11 wickets. For the other statistical highlights of the season, refer to the & bowling tables in this report. Congratulations to the following boys who have won Association awards in 2004-05 – Josh Cole (U/13 Batting), Chris Aldersley (U/14 Batting), Stephen Smith (U/15 Batting) and Brendon Scott (U/15 Bowling). In order to acknowledge outstanding long service to NCC juniors, our club is presenting a new award from this season onwards to any boys who play continuously from Kangas / Have a Go to U/16 with our club. I am pleased to announce that Joel Carter, Ryan Townsend and Jeff Thomson are the first recipients of this award. This season NCC had a club record number of boys (31) selected in HK&HDCA representative teams – see names and photo at the end of this Annual Report. Well done to two young A Graders, James Rushton & Michael Cooke, who played in the U/19 Durham Shield competition. We look forward to seeing more young boys and their NCC teams advance through the junior competitions and into our senior teams in the future. The Association holds two special representative matches every year – the U/15 Ross Turner Cup and the U/12 Glenn Hourigan Cup. I am pleased to report that NCC had 7 players selected in the Turner Cup match – Stephen Smith, Brendon Scott, Calum Waldegrave, Chris Aldersley, Timm van der Gugten, Simon Fox & Daniel Wood. NCC also had 2 players selected in the Hourigan Cup match – Jarrod Witts & Jordan Pidgeon. All our boys performed well and made big impressions on the coaches, selectors and officials at the matches. A special mention to Timm van der Gugten (U/15) and Jarrod Witts (U/13) on their selection in the Cricket NSW Emerging Blues teams for 2005-06 – they are the first NCC players to reach this level. Timm has had a brilliant season, winning Premierships with his NCC U/14 Gilchrist team and the St Pius 1st XI (Man of Match in Grand Final), representing Uni NSW in the U/16 Green Shield competition, winning the batting prize in the HK&HDCA U/14 Moore Shield team, and making successive scores of 49no, 100no & 64 at the Bowral U/14 rep. carnival in April. Timm has twice won the prestigious NCC Junior Cricketer of the Year award (2002-03 & 2003-04) and is an inspiration to the many talented and dedicated cricketers now coming through NCC juniors. CLUB TROPHIES and AWARDS

NCC presents the following awards and trophies: • Each new junior starting his or her cricket with Normanhurst is presented with a personalised “plaque”. Each season after that, a new team plate is presented to be added to their plaque (there’s room for 10 plates). • Each Junior team’s Coach / Manager or Senior team’s Captain awards 3 individual trophies to recognise special achievements. (NCC has a criteria to determine the batting & bowling awards in senior and junior cricket). • The team Manager / Coach also nominate players for the club’s perpetual trophies, from which the winners are selected by the Executive Committee. • Any player who scores a century is presented with a minibat outlining the details (name, score, grade, opposition & date). Their name and score are added to the NCC Bill Kemsley Centuries Shield. • Any player who achieves a hat-trick during the season is presented with the ball mounted. If the hat-trick is achieved in competitive cricket (U/11 upwards), their name is added to the NCC Bowlers’ Honour Board. • Any player who takes 7 or more wickets in an innings, or 10 or more wickets in a match, is presented with a trophy containing the match ball and their name and figures are added to the NCC Bowlers’ Honour Board. • Any player who has played for 5 (or 10) years with NCC is presented with a service medal. This does not have to be consecutive seasons. • Any players who play continuously from Kangas / Have a Go to U/16 with NCC will be presented with an award to recognise their long service and commitment to NCC junior cricket. • Players in teams that win their competition are presented with an NCC Premiership plaque. The coaches and managers receive a Premiership medal. The Association presents the players with an embroidered baggy cap. • Any players who graduate from U/16’s to seniors with NCC the following season receive a red & black NCC baggy cap. This usually occurs at either the Presentation Night or at the first match in the following season. • Any player who represented HK&HDCA in representative cricket is presented with an NCC rep. medal.

After many years of Kanga Cricket at Normo CC, it was decided to switch to the new Have-A-Go format supported by Cricket NSW. This provided a more structured development program than in previous years and also saw the kids being issued with a range of Milo cricket gear to take home and practice with.

The Have-A-Go program proved to be more marketable and popular with the 5 – 7 year olds and their families, as our numbers more than doubled from last year’s Kanga program. Rocco Giaquinto, NCC Youth Development Officer, arranged for a representative from Cricket NSW to visit a range of local schools, promoting the NCC Have-A-Go program. This initiative was no doubt instrumental in our huge increase in numbers this season.

The season kicked off with 45 boys and 6 girls signed up with Have-A-Go. The goals for the season were to ensure the children had fun, developed their cricket skills, developed their sportsmanship skills and learnt some of the disciplines involved in playing cricket and being part of a team.

The Have-A-Go program issued by Cricket NSW was closely followed for the first few weeks, however it soon became apparent that the children still enjoyed the fun of Diamond Cricket and this became the regular game for finishing off the morning.

With an average of 40 children participating each week, it would have been impossible to run each session alone. Parental involvement was fantastic and I would like to thank all those parents who assisted, in particular Marcus, Darren, the Robs, Michael and Toby.

It was rewarding to see the improvement of each child over the season. We have some potential champs in the squad and each one of them will tell you that they will be playing for Australia someday. The children took on the spirit of cricket well and were always enthusiastic and very well behaved. Congratulations to all the Have-A-Go cricketers on a fantastic season.

Thanks again to the children for their enthusiasm each Saturday morning – good luck next season.

Most of the under 9s were in their first year of “proper” cricket competing against other clubs and had an excellent year. Of the 18 games played, we won 14 under the average system, which is limited to 16 overs per team. As there is no competition table in this age group we don’t know how we finished in relation to the other teams but there were a couple of teams that were definitely miffed when we beat them late in the season. The 10 boys were always keen to play and train. Their skills development was quite successful. Every player genuinely improved and performed a match winning performance at some stage of the season. We played only 2 matches with the regulation 8 players, at every other match we had reserves. Five players actually played in all 18 games. The coach Tom Reid deserves full credit for making the matches (and training) fun, interesting and challenging for all the team. There was plenty of parent involvement with Stewart Johnson and Tony Middlebrook taking on the bulk of the umpiring duties, Russell Stephens assisting at the Thursday training sessions and everyone else pitching in when needed to pad up the batsmen and lend a hand. Thanks everyone. Our team was as follows:- Ben Griffiths – developed well as a cricketer during the season his best skill being his spin bowling, which bagged 12 wickets for the season. Best bowling performance 4 wickets for 2 runs. Best batting was 14 from two overs faced. Daniel Reid – a classic all-rounder with plenty of pace in his bowling and never scared to have a go with the bat, scoring over two hundred in the season. Daniel was always more likely to hold a catch than anyone else and took some quite remarkable catches this season. Best bowling performance was 3 for 4. Best batting was 22 off two overs. Dhruv Kaushik – really improved his bowling during the season. Best bowling effort was 1 over, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for zero runs! Best batting was 12 from 12 balls. Fletcher Stephens – a genuine all-rounder with his left arm swing bowling and punishing batting. Fletcher topped the aggregate runs for the season with 223 runs from 33 overs faced. Best batting was 24 from just two overs. Best bowling was 4 for 2. Harrison Middlebrook – would have topped the batting averages easily with a bradmanesque average if he didn’t lose his wicket in the last match. Only player to hit a six off a no ball. Harrison bats and bowls with a classical style. Best batting was 20 from 2 overs. Best bowling was 1 for 4. Kartik Kundra – bowled tightly and accurately all season to take out the bowling award with an average of 5.2 (15 wickets for 78 runs). Also batted as if he had been doing it all his life, scoring over two hundred runs in the season. Best bowling 3 for 3. Best batting 22 off 2 overs. Kushagra Kundra – although playing above his age you couldn’t tell from his performances. Kush bowled brilliantly all season, only his brother had a better average. Also batted solidly against all opponents. Best bowling was 3 wickets for no runs in two matches! Best batting 17 from 2 overs. Kieren Johnson – batted and bowled well all season. He only got out 3 times in the whole season. Kieran also kept the batsmen honest whenever he had his turn at keeping wicket. Best bowling 2 for 13. Best batting 19 off two overs. Mark Munasinghe – improved right through the season particularly with his bowling. Took two wickets and two difficult catches in the last match the season to finish the year as the man of the match. Best bowling performance 2 for 4. Best batting was 11 from just 12 balls. Oliver Harradine – batted solidly throughout the season to take the batting average award with an average of 60.67 (182 runs for 3 outs). Bowled his slow spinners with an accuracy that usually tied down the batting. Best bowling figures were 3 for 3. Best batting was 22 from 2 overs. Coaches Alistair Simpson and Ross Howard Manager David Blunt

The U/10 Gillespie team was a great group of boys who all got on well and had a very enjoyable summer of cricket. All players developed their skills during the summer and by the end of the season were showing signs of good teamwork (and sportsmanship). The team started the season with a tie and two strong wins. Sam is tireless in the field, taking some great catches and was involved in a number of run outs. Sam continues to show great potential both as a batsman and a fast bowler. Sam scored 137 runs at an average of 19.57, with a highest score of 30 not out. Sam took 5 wickets at an average of 29.60, conceding 148 runs from 38 overs. Coach Peter Thorburn Assistant Coach Jeff Rogers Manager Anthony Fox

The Under 10 Ponting team had a successful season posting over 1700 runs and taking 73 wickets. The boys increased their skills and understanding of the game and always played enthusiastic cricket. Daniel Arthur: Took out the bowling award with 13 wickets for the season from his slow pace and accuracy with best figures of 4/27.

Harnett Bhatia: Gained confidence as the season unfolded and was always keen to listen to advice. He scored 73 runs and played some great straight bat shots.

Matthew Cosgriff: Always keen and enthusiastic left hand batsman and fieldsman who posted 96 runs with a 16 run average and claiming 6 wickets from his medium pace attack.

William Fox: A consistent strong hitting right hand batsman who punished any stray deliveries, posting 362 runs average 51.7 and claiming the batting award. Handy as wicket keeper and fast bowler taking 8 wickets, best figures of 4/17.

UNDER 11 LANGER

Coach Stuart McInnis Manager Nigel Lazarus

Congratulations to all the boys on a great season! A highly commendable all-round team effort, producing an excellent overall result – desperately unlucky in the end to just miss out on the finals after such a heroic last match effort.

After a season-opening match “shocker”, the boys displayed some gutsy team spirit in immediately bouncing back in the second match, and followed up with a string of very solid performances. Individually all boys contributed with plenty of enthusiasm and steady improvement throughout the season. Jordan Brady compiled several very nice innings, invariably making bowlers pay dearly for straying down the leg side (Jordan is awarded “best batsman” for the season). Hugh Davies wore down the opposition with a consistent line and length, and was rightly rewarded with many nice wickets to celebrate. Josh Davies developed some scintillating pace to go with his good line and length – flying bails became a regular feature (Josh is awarded “best bowler” for the season). Jason Garrett’s explosive scoring with the bat - on both sides of the wicket - helped to quickly boost our totals on several occasions, while his lively and accurate left-arm spin kept batsmen starved of runs. James Giltrap put in excellent performances with bat, ball, and gloves – a great all-round contribution. Josh Lazarus played with excellent maturity - snaring many timely wickets with his consistent bowling and strong awareness in the field, and putting in some handy knocks with the bat. Harry McInnis was sharp in the field with nice catches and accurate returns, and bowled solidly for some well-earned wickets. Sam Morris showed an excellent eye, knocking down the stumps for run-outs, as well as producing some handy performances, both bowling and batting. Ananya Parthasarathy bowled very steadily to deny runs for the opposition and was very unlucky not to have snared more wickets – he also showed good improvement with the bat once settled in. Cameron Rickard attacked his cricket with great spirit in every department, resulting in entertaining and very successful performances with both bat and ball (Cameron is awarded “best team player” for the season). Warren Saldanha was the “backbone” of the innings on several occasions with his copybook batting technique mixed with sustained concentration – and his high quality spin bowling kept the opposition pinned down. Lach Skulander took an amazing 10 catches for the season, and contributed very nicely with patient and mature batting and wicket-keeping, as well as some nifty left-arm spin. Oliver Treanor performed consistently well with excellent pace bowling – many of his deliveries completely beating the batsmen with pace – and also dug in very well with the bat at key times.

Many thanks to the parents for their efforts and assistance with scoring, umpiring, additional coaching, etc through the season – in particular Nigel Lazarus (Manager), Jim Treanor, Bill Garrett, Karl Davies, Garth Brady, and Norbert Saldanha.

Congratulations once again to all the boys, and good cricketing for next season!

UNDER 11 MacGILL ** PREMIERS **

Coach Andrew Fullagar Manager Paul Johnston

The U/11 MacGill team consisted of the following players:

Tim Acheson, David Algama, Louis Burke-Xie, Lachlan Ford, Mitchell Fullagar, Nicholas Fullagar, Mathew Johnston, Brendan Maxworthy, Cameron Maxworthy, Elliott McClintock, Jordan Pidgeon, Guy Seymour and Liam Willis.

2004/05 was U/11 MacGill’s first season of hard ball cricket. Our team’s focus was for every boy to have the same opportunities, regardless of ability. As a result of this we finished the season as undefeated premiers with a convincing win in the final. The team’s bowling depth is evident in that all boys were within 6 overs of each other by the season’s end with each team member managing to take a number of wickets. This skilful bowling was backed up by enthusiastic fielding with many great catches being taken as well as team run outs. The batting improved greatly as the boy’s confidence grew, with all the boys performing beyond our expectations. This resulted in some great individual and team scores. In the semi-final we played WPH-C Red. We won the toss and elected to bowl although conditions weren’t ideal – wet and dewy. Great bowling and fielding restricted WPH-C to 8-124 off 50 overs included in this were four great run outs. Chasing 124 the batsmen went about the chase slowly at first but increased the rate and easily accounted for the total. 2-127 off 39 overs. In this game Lachlan Ford 2-9 and Tim Acheson 1-10 took the bowling honours and Mathew Johnston 40 retired and Jordan Pidgeon 30no excelled with the bat. The Final against WPH-C Blue at Thornleigh Oval saw us win the toss and elect to bat. Showed patience early then took to the bowling during the middle and late overs, scoring an impressive 7-197 off 50 overs. Lachlan Ford 49, Guy Seymour 35, Mitchell Fullagar 30 and Jordan Pidgeon 21 being our top run scorers. Fast, tight bowling early in their innings put pressure on the opposition and our slow bowlers finished them off. WPH-C all out for 75. Mathew Johnston 3-12 and Tim Acheson 2-20 were our leading wicket-takers on the day. The team was proud to win Normanhurst’s first ever U/11 Premiership. To achieve this honour with six U/10 players in the team speaks volumes for the players’ abilities and commitment to the team. The season was very enjoyable due to the attitude and sportsmanship shown towards one another and also towards the opposition and the umpires. As always, a successful season requires support from the parents, of which there was an abundance. I would like to thank Mark Fullagar, Greg Ford and Rod Seymour for helping out at training. I would especially like to thank Paul Johnston for his tireless efforts as Manager. All of these people contributed to a highly successful and rewarding season. Well done everyone. UNDER 13 MARTYN

Coach Graham Skulander Manager Peter Krisenthal

The team enjoyed their cricket this year although they struggled a little to get the wins on the board due to a number of factors, albeit, everyone gave 100% and all enjoyed their season. James Arthur – this was James’s first year with the rest of the boys and he quickly became an enthusiastic member of the team. He took some fantastic catches in the field and even opened the batting with confidence at the end of the season. Daniel Christ – again this year Daniel was always keen and vocal which helped lift the spirits of the whole team throughout the year. His versatility in bowling came through this year, as he showed good control with both spin and pace, depending on the situation. Christy Doran – Christy showed his excellent technique in batting again this year with his highest score being 61 retired. Also, his bowling this year was very effective again, taking 9 wickets. Thomas Foreman – the “Normanhurst Express”, Tom seemed to be the fastest bowler in the comp this year and terrorised many batsmen through his sheer speed and accuracy, culminating in his best bowling figures of the year being 3 for 4. Nick Georgiou – Nick always gave 100% for the team throughout the season, no matter whether it was batting, bowling or fielding. He was always willing to put in no matter what request was asked of him. He kept the rest of the team’s spirits high and batted with great tenacity. Simon Krisenthal – Simon showed his skills wicket keeping this year. His quick movement behind the stumps prevented the other teams from amassing many sundries from some of our wayward bowling. Simon also enjoyed his batting this year, albeit the “dream bat” did not perform as well as he would of liked at times. Jack Leslie – unfortunately Jack was only with us for half of the season, the time he was part of the team, he contributed well and was a very valuable team member. Karan Mahimkar – this was Karan’s first season of cricket, he impressed not only me but all his team mates with his enthusiasm and his willingness to learn the skills of the game. Matthew Nelson – again this year Matt contributed with both the bat and the ball throughout the season, being equal highest wicket taker with the ball and scoring runs at vital times in several matches. Mitchell Skulander – Mitchell was also equal highest wicket taker with the ball throughout the year with 9 wickets at an average of 9.7 runs per wicket. This was an excellent improvement on last years bowling and he was always enthusiastic in the field. Christopher Szoboszlay – this was Chris’ first year with the team, he was always keen to get stuck in whether it be batting, bowling or fielding and thoroughly enjoyed his season. Adrian Szoboszlay – this was also Adrian’s first year with the team and he was always ready to get involved when needed, especially showing his keenness in the field. Daniel Rickard – Daniel joined the team this year and had a great time with the boys. His bowling shone through, taking 8 valuable wickets and he showed great determination in his batting. Jarrod Witts – again, Jarrod had a great year with the boys, whether it be batting, bowling or wicket keeping. His batting shone through with 2 scores over 50; average 37; highest score 63 retired. It was great to see Jarrod change his batting style depending on what the situation was the team was in. I would like to thank all the parents who came along each week to support the boys and a special thanks to Kyriacos Georgiou for once again scoring so accurately and willingly again each weekend, your efforts are really appreciated. I would also like to thank Peter Krisenthal for his help in managing the team and spending many hours umpiring each Saturday in the hot sun. Finally, I would like to thank all the boys for a great season and hope to see all of you back again next season. 18 UNDER 13 LEHMANN Coach John Corish Manager Sue Haertsch This team had an enjoyable and successful season, finishing an 18 team competition in 6th place – only two points out of the semi-finals. A no-result shin-high puddle of water in the middle of Campbell Park (with 250+ runs on the board) ended up depriving these boys from a top four finish. Not bad for a team with half the side eligible to play U12s, and patched together from last years U12 side (two wins in that season), the U11 side (no wins), a player coming out of retirement, an import and one handy cricketer who played U/13s last year. The scoreboard at the end of the season read 6 wins, 3 losses (one on handicap), a bye and a no result. Cameron Allen – came out of a short retirement and very quickly reminded us all of his presence. Bowled very consistently all year taking 4 wickets, and batted well including his two highest scores against the better sides. Chinmay Chitale – successfully took up the challenge to develop a spin bowler for the team to add variety to our attack. Bowled with great control and intelligence for a new art. Once again scored consistently with 165 runs for the season, including a match saving 10th wicket partnership against Galston Glenorie. Josh Cole – The stats say it all - 366 runs at an average of 91.5, retired 6 times including every game after Christmas. Took 5 catches in the field, including a catch at cover in Round 3 direct from anyone else’s dreams. An exceptional season from a very gifted and hard working cricketer. Tim Corish – again led the bowling with 10 wickets for the season, bowling accurately and consistently. Regularly offered encouragement to his team mates in the field – though needs to trade in his lump of willow. Zac Fiakos – not able to play many games during the season, but a great effort whenever on the field. Bowled accurately and economically. Not afraid to get in behind the ball when batting, as often ended up facing the best bowlers the opposition had to offer. Asiri Gunawardena – imported from Kissing Point this season and proved to be a very welcome addition. Immediately made an impact by top scoring in Round 1 against his old team mates. Bowled fast and accurately. Took an absolute screamer behind square leg against Mt Colah to put us back in control of the match. Lindsay Haertsch – tough as teak and about as noisy. Shared the keeping duties and endured all sorts of knocks, bruises and abrasions in snaring 4 catches and a stumping with the gloves. Bowled well, including a match turning 3/6 (plus a run-out) in a nail biter against Galston Glenorie. Matthew Haertsch – another manufactured spinner who bowled better and better as the season wore on. Very hard to get the ball off once it was in his hands. Lived every ball of his cricket – whether with the gloves on, bowling his tweakers or batting, including a match winning partnership against his ARL mates. Chris Petrie – highlight of the season was a hard fought 20 retired in the final game, well earned through determination and effort. Ended the season with a bang – runs, a wicket and a catch to reward his persistence. Bowled well but will take more wickets once consistency improves and able to exert pressure on the batsmen. Kurtis Stephens – final season for the club before heading North for a warmer climate. Will be a loss with his whole-hearted and selfless contributions. Developed greater accuracy and consistency at the bowling crease towards the end of the season. A couple of good knocks before Christmas with only time preventing more runs. The Kurtis & Lindsay mime show added crowd value when running between wickets together! Andre Szorkovszky – must have found the Wheat Bix during the off season! Scored over three times as many runs as the season before, always in good time, with vital innings against Galston Glenorie & Upper Hills. Regularly took wickets. Just missed the most improved award in a photo-finish with a great season. Adam Vilimaa – deadly with the willow when able to maintain concentration and wait for the right ball to slaughter. Miraculous improvement with the ball when he decided what he wanted to bowl (apart from everything). Wins the most improved team award with 8 wickets for the season, all taken in the final 5 games, when he started to bowl with intimidating speed and new-found accuracy to have the opposition hopping. Sean Willis – 150+ runs for the season including cracking a 50 retired for the first time. Match saving partnerships against Galston Glenorie and ARL (though don’t mention this to Sean or we’ll never hear the end of it). Bowled well during the season, with 2 wickets in each of in his first and last overs for the season. Beat the bat regularly with controlled outswing, including 6 times in an over against the Mt Colah top order. A big thank you to Sue Haertsch for her management expertise and efforts, Elemer Szorkovszky for his scoring and real time statistical analysis, and Anant Chitale and Brad Cole for their assistance at training. UNDER 14 GILCHRIST ** PREMIERS ** Coach : Bruce Wood Assistant Coaches : Graeme Phillips and Stuart Logan The 2004-05 season was another most enjoyable and successful one for this group of keen cricketers. Our team won 11 straight matches, including two outright, and achieved some outstanding batting and bowling displays. The team peaked at the end of the season, achieving massive wins over the three WPH-C teams – 7/346 to 146 against WPH-C White in the last competition round; 215 to 71 against WPH-C Blue in the Semi; and 7/269 to 59 against WPH-C Red in the Final. The team benefited from having three experienced coaches at nearly every training session at Barker College and I would like to thank Graeme Phillips and Stuart Logan for their tremendous assistance towards the coaching of the team. Thanks also to Calypso Aldersley for submitting the team and individual statistics to the Association and NCC webmaster. Our team played positive, attacking cricket and thoroughly deserved the U/14 Premiership to become the first junior team in NCC history to win back-to-back titles. Having been undefeated for two seasons, our team will play in the U/16’s in 2005-06. Our team also gained external recognition, winning the Radio 2UE Rebel Sport Junior Team of the Week on 29-4-05. Simon Fox (Captain) – Simon did an excellent job as skipper, being enthusiastic in the field and intelligent in his decision-making. He led from the front, scoring 309 runs, including 4 half-centuries (HS 75 ret.) and 51 in the Final. His accurate off-spin bowling (11 wickets) was very reliable. He showed great commitment to the team. Chris Aldersley (v-c) – Statistically Chris was our top player this season, scoring 336 runs (ave. 67.2), taking 24 wickets (including a hat-trick) & 5 catches. His terrific all-round performance enabled him to win the NCC Junior Cricketer of the Year Award. He was Player of the Carnival on the rep. trip to Newcastle in Jan. 2005. Nick Creighton – Nick bowled very consistently and his fast / medium out-swingers earned him 14 wickets and an economy rate of 1.4 runs per over. Nick developed considerably as a batsman and he scored 50no v. CHRSL Green. He won the inaugural HK&HDCA Kookaburra Sponsorship Award for the month of October 2004. Sam Higgins – Sam made a late start to season after recovering from a broken foot. He is an aggressive middle-order batsman who had two great innings – 62no and 65no, including many 4’s & 6’s. His left-arm fast bowling intimidates many batsmen and he learned to not over-bowl his deadly bouncer. Todd Logan – Todd continued to develop his cricket skills this season and scored a couple of nice 20’s along the way. He developed into a capable leg-spinner and always worked hard at practice – an excellent team man. Matt Lomax – In his first season with the club, Matt played an important part in our success, being the equal second highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets @ 6.64 average. He contributed well with the bat when required, including 15 in the Semi and 18no in the Final. One of the quiet achievers – a welcome addition to our team. David Lotzof – David improved his skills this season and worked hard at both his batting and bowling. He unfortunately missed several matches due to a leg injury. His highlight was taking 2/23 v. Kissing Point. Joshua Phillips – Josh displayed his sound batting technique on many occasions, with his best effort being 42 against Berowra in Round 8. He also further developed his very promising leg-spin and ‘wrong-un’ bowling. Jarrod Rixon – Jarrod made limited appearances with our team this season due to school cricket however he twice proved successful in the opening batting position with 20no & 26. His medium-pace bowling bamboozled many batsmen and he did well to take 8 wickets @ 9.75, including an excellent 1/9 off 5 overs in the Semi. Mitchell Thorburn – Mitchell had another very consistent season as a top-order batsman, scoring 297 runs @ 42.4 ave. He batted superbly in the Final, arriving at the crease with our score on 1/15 at 10.12am and finally being run out for 68 at 1.30pm when our team’s score was 4/228. He took 7 catches & a stumping as our w-k. Solomon Tomlinson-Owens – Solomon had a great all-round season, scoring 257 runs @ 64.3 average (HS 75 retired). He is also a terrific left-arm fast bowler who took 13 wickets @ 6.1 average. He is an outstanding fielder – a brilliant catcher in the gully – he took 8 catches and displayed superb ground fielding skills. Timm van der Gugten – Timm gained selection in the St Pius 1st XI this season and was therefore unable to play many matches for our Gilchrist team. He is a powerful batsman & fast bowler and was an inspiration to his team-mates whenever he played. He took 3/7 in the Semi and 2/6 in the Final, and also scored a quick 72 runs. Daniel Wood – Daniel played some very good innings this season and also bowled with real pace. He missed several matches due to his Barker cricket commitments however he scored 170 runs @ 56.7 average, with a highest score of 47. He is a powerful striker of the ball with a much improved batting technique this season. James Zheng – James joined our team for his first season of cricket. He was a dispensated (U/15) player who worked very hard at training and really developed his batting and bowling skills. He showed great commitment to the team and is a pleasure to coach. James is popular with his team-mates and was our most improved player. UNDER 14 WAUGH

Coach: Anthony Maxworthy Assistant Coach: John Green Manager: Michael Donnelly

It was an up-and-down season in terms of results this year for the Waugh team, with 5 wins and 6 losses. Highlights included a thrilling win in the one-day game against eventual semi-finalists WPHC-Blue, an exciting close match with Upper Hills and two fun Kimbo Cup matches to finish off 2004/05. The boys enjoyed their season and it was great to see them all developing their cricket skills. Congratulations to everyone in the team for their contributions and enthusiasm.

Matthew Pendleton again served as team captain and did a splendid job. Matthew was one of the leading run scorers (181 at an average of 18.1) and was our most regular wicketkeeper. Michael Arthur added variety to the bowling attack with his left armers. His 3 wickets against Castle Hill were a highlight. Michael saved some of his best batting until late in the season when he scored runs in both of the Kimbo Cup games. Andrew Bastoli always bats with great determination, best shown when he opened against WPHC- Red. His bowling showed great improvement over the year. When given the new ball in the first of the Kimbo Cup games, Andrew took 3 wickets. Kunwar Bhatia usually opened the batting and bowled tightly all season, often with the new ball. He proved difficult to score runs off and was unlucky not to take more wickets. Alek Cahill had a shortened season, returning in the New Year to bowl tightly but without luck. Alek had few opportunities to show his batting skills. Tom Cole had a fabulous season. He was the highest run scorer (364 at an average of 33.1), the leading wicket taker (24), and the top catcher (9 for the season)! Tom scored runs quickly and consistently, took 3 or more wickets in 4 innings and fielded very well in close. Justin Donnelly bowled well with the new ball or as first change. His batting improved over the season with highlights being a 52-run partnership with Tom Cole to help post a winning total and 20 not out in the second last game. Patrick Ferrara usually batted as opener or at No.3 and bowled well throughout the season. Highlights included a score of 32 in a 71-run opening partnership against Berowra and his 3 wickets against Castle Hill. Andrew Giltrap played only a handful of games with ‘Normo’ this year because of school cricket commitments. His batting and spin bowling skills, along with his great enthusiasm, were always appreciated and contributed to the team’s effort. Tom Green is a hard-hitting batsman. He is an enthusiastic team player, a handy bowler and has a safe pair of hands. Tom collected 9 wickets with his medium pacers and took 7 catches, making him the team’s second most successful bowler and fielder. Isaac Malamel, in only his first season of cricket, established himself as an opening bowler, hard-hitting batsman and excellent fielder. Isaac made three scores of close to 20, took three catches in one innings, and his direct hit from the boundary was the most memorable run out. Jason Maxworthy proved to be a dependable middle order batsman scoring 186 runs at an average of 18.6. Jason also made valuable contributions with the ball, with best figures of 3/22. Andrew Patfield brought variety to the bowling attack with his left-arm spinners and made some solid batting contributions in his first season with Normanhurst. Thank you to Anthony Maxworthy and John Green for their coaching of the team. Thanks also to the parents that assisted with scoring, particularly Geoff Cahill, Brad Cole and Phill Pendleton. 22 UNDER 15 McGRATH Coach John Magrath Assistant Coach: Nathan Ryan Manager Frank Waldegrave

Developed into a very strong and confident batting outfit but had difficulty knocking sides over. Nevertheless won 6 from 9 matches and made the Semis for the first time in quite a while, unfortunately going down in a tight tussle to the strong Upper Hills side. The boys again showed great sportsmanship and camaraderie and are a credit to both themselves and the club in their attitude to the game.

The team was as follows: Stephen Smith (captain) – An outstanding batting performance, scoring 399 runs at 57 with 5 knocks of fifty plus. Always looking to attack the bowling and pressure the fieldsmen and unable to be contained by any bowler in the comp. Aiden Allen – Continued an horrendous run with injuries, missing all but the last three games but bowled very tight and economic spells in each of those games. Jonathan Barakat – The year Jono came of age as a batsman. Scored 28 in a sparkling 52 run 1st wicket partnership in a one dayer and backed it up 2 matches later with 49 including 2 sixes. Ben Berndt – New to the side but a popular team member who fitted in well and performed admirably in his first season of cricket since the U/11’s in 2000-01. Michael Brown – Another whose batting improved greatly this season with a top score of 22 not out and as usual bowled quickly and accurately. Nathan Cleasby – Handy all round effort – scored his share of runs, took his share of wickets and as always fielded very well and with great enthusiasm. Matt Guerrera – Put in more effort to improve this season which reflected most notably with his fielding – stats not great but did share a 53 run partnership in an important one dayer which was duly won ensuring a semi final spot. Mitchell Magrath – Good all round cricketer who had a season he would prefer to forget but whose brother is unlikely to let him. Rajesh Mottey – New to the side and performed well. Generally bowled tightly and was rewarded with 5/4 against Glenorie. Was involved in several useful lower order partnerships. Mikhail Rodricks – A very good season with the bat hitting 2 fifties on his way to an average of 37. Excellent fieldsman and handy medium pacer. Brendon Scott – Opening bowler who topped the aggregate and averages with 19 wickets at a tick over 12 runs apiece. Disappointing season with the bat but certain to score many runs in seasons to come. Tim Stephenson – Continues to improve with both bat and ball. Worked his way into the opening batting spot and generally proved difficult to dismiss. Rob Waight – Solid season with the bat scoring 197 runs at 24 including 56 in the semi final. Started to find a bit of turn with his offies, providing useful variety to our attack. Calum Waldegrave – An excellent all round performance and perhaps our most penetrative bowler. 19 wickets at 13.7, 162 runs at 32 and 10 catches says it all.

Nathan Ryan (assistant coach), Frank Waldegrave (manager and scorer) and myself congratulate the boys on an excellent season and thank the parents for their support. John Magrath Awards: Batting Award: Stephen Smith Bowling Award: Brendon Scott All Rounder Award: Calum Waldegrave

UNDER 16 LEE

Coach Cameron Riddett Manager Graham Gorrie

Our team this season consisted of the following players: Michael Gorrie (Captain), Craig Austin, Daman Bhatia, Joel Carter, Ben Clear, David Hodge, Harry Morton, Brennen Smart, Brad Stratton, Toby Thatcher, Jeff Thomson, Ryan Townsend

The season began with the boys having to chase a total of 300 less one. Unfortunately the rust from the off season was still around and a meagre assault on the opposition’s total was the response as well as having to bat again and failing to forestall an outright defeat. Not the start that was planned.

Rounds 2 and 3 were a little better, first innings defeats but a few of the players were starting to demonstrate their skills with bat, ball and in the field.

The fourth round was reduced to a one day affair. Victory was experienced with a tidy performance in the field keeping the other side to 120. Normo unleashed its true calibre scoring a whirlwind 208 in reply with seven batsmen reaching double figures.

The euphoria of the previous win had well and truly disappeared by the next game. Setting a small total 129, Normo couldn’t halt the onslaught of the other side who posted 213 for five down. Sent in to bat again the boys batted out the time to prevent an outright result.

The next game (Round 6) was again disappointing. There were signs of hope – some solid performances with the bat, but not enough was done with the ball to stave off defeat.

The last game before Christmas was a top effort – a credible bowling and fielding performance which reduced the other side to only 6/109. Normo continued the form with the bat and finished 4/110.

The last two games of the season were unspectacular – some glimpses of form but not enough to overcome defeat.

While there some disappointments, the boys keep pressing on through adversity. They held their heads high throughout the lows and celebrated the victories in a humble manner.

This was a team out of luck but they can all be proud of their commitment to turn up each week and face the music. Lesser teams would have given up. There is nothing but admiration for these young men – they are winners and will go into senior competition armed with the right attitude and sense of fair play.

It has been an honour to be associated with this team and the overwhelming support of their mums and dads has been an inspiration. It would be remiss not to mention the supply of sausage rolls that appeared at each game – they were delicious.

24 SENIORS A GRADE

Captain – Rod Seymour Manager – Ian Hawkins

After winning the A2s competition in 2003-04, the team was confident of a successful first year back in A Grade. Due to retirement, world travel and work commitments, the team lost some quality players from the previous year, but with some handy additions we still had a team that had the potential to make the finals. Unfortunately it turned out to be a season of missed opportunities.

On the first day of the season, we bowled and fielded brilliantly to knock over Kissing Point, the defending premiers, for 144 (S. Laveau 3/11 & D. Croft 4/47). Finishing the day at 1/56 in reply, a washout on Day 2 denied the side what would have been a confidence boosting first up victory.

Thankfully that first win came in Round 2. Struggling late on Day 1 at 9/208, a 62 run stand from numbers 10 & 11 (I. Hawkins 41* & J. Rushton 27) gave us a competitive total. Another solid bowling and fielding effort (J. Rushton 3/33) resulted in an 82 run victory. The next three rounds confirmed that we would be competitive against every team in the comp, but also confirmed that we would need to be at our best every week to keep winning. We lost by 3 runs against Berowra (M. Cooke 42, A. Walker 57 & P. Bradey 38), 6 wickets against Kenthurst after being rolled on a wet deck we should not have been playing on (D. Croft 3/38, A. Walker 38 & V. Wadia 66) and a heart breaking 1 wicket loss to ARL (S. Laveau 3/44 & D. Croft 3/20).

Once again rain on Day 2 robbed us against Kissing Point. Batting first, 224 (V. Wadia 47, M. Rowe 59 & C. Hawkins 24) might not have been enough until S. Laveau (4/20) ripped the heart out of their top order with some fiery swing bowling, to have them reeling at 6/54 at stumps on Day 1. There was no consolation in making Kissing Point wait all of Day 2 in the hope of playing on a pitch that was no worse than the one we were made to bat on earlier in the season.

The games after Christmas often make or break a season and ours was broken by two of the better batting sides. Chasing 339 against WPH, 71 not out from skipper Rod Seymour helped us to a gutsy draw. Next game on a flat Parklands pitch, Berowra scored 332 (D. Croft 5/68, A. Walker 3 catches + 1 stumping). A gallant chase of 298 (V. Wadia 66, S. Laveau 45 & D. Croft 36) was hampered by a sluggish pitch and outfield from rain the previous two days.

An impressive win against eventual finalists Kenthurst came too late to save our season. Kenthurst crawled to 122 (P. Bradey 2/24 & D. Croft 5/34) and 1st innings points were secured with a couple of balls to spare on Day 1. Declaring at 6/270 (I. Hawkins 41, M. Rowe 76* & D. Croft 50*) we finished 4 wickets short of an outright win that may have put us back in semi final contention.

In the last game of the year, the only significant contributions to our total of 180 came from our best bat, Viraf Wadia with 67 and 31 from Simon Laveau. Missing 3 of our 4 full time bowlers, not even inspired spells of slow bowling from under-rated net bowlers Murray Rowe (2/30) and Michael Cooke (2/35) could get us across the line.

While the season was disappointing in terms of results, this team of good mates had plenty of fun (most weeks) and with a years A Grade experience under our belt, there is plenty of potential for the 2005/2006 season. Special mention must be made of two players new to Normanhurst this year, Michael Cooke and James Rushton. Both had yet to turn 18 at the start of the season and after being thrown in the deep end, slotted into the team well and showed plenty of promise for the future. 2004-05 season record: 2 wins / 5 losses / 3 draws

25 B GRADE Captain – Anthony Maxworthy Well would we have won the final? I guess we’ll never know. If it had been a one-day match it would have been a distinct possibility, considering we were undefeated in all 5 one-day matches we played. Unfortunately, we only just missed out on the semi’s due to a poor first half of the season, and some dubious results in the last round of the season which saw us miss out on the finals by only a couple of points. Ironically Mt Colah took out the premiership – the only side that we had managed to beat on both occasions during the season. The match of the season was against our good friends WPH-C at Greenway. We had the extra advantage of the “Hawkins factor” (Ian and Chris) which may have made the difference. Chasing down 156 runs, Cam tried to hoick his first ball over mid-wicket and had his castle knocked over. We progressed to get within 9 runs of the target, thanks largely to a Captain’s knock which saw us needing a run a ball with only 1 wicket in hand. With Akshay and Rocco at the crease, the rest of us sat on the edge of our seats with every confidence that they would see us through. Finally Akshay delivered one of his well practiced ‘late cuts’ over the top of slips to score the final run with only one ball to spare. This moment of triumph prompted a rendition of the Normo song in the dressing room afterwards. What a game – if only it was the final. Our team had a great season – full of good fun and plenty of laughs. Our record for the season was 6 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses, finishing in 5th place. Anthony Maxworthy displayed sound leadership mixed with some cranky moments. He was always a good man to have on your side as he knew the rulebook inside out. He scored 348 runs @ 26.77 and took 14 wickets. After Robbie Magrath realised he had forgotten to put his box in after 6 overs in a one-dayer against WPH Red, he amassed his best knock of the season with 70no. This saw us win the first of 5 one-day games on the trot. Rob took 17 catches in the field (more than our ‘keeper) – a great effort on top of a fantastic all-round season. Cameron Riddett - is he a bowler or batsman? After the first game of the season one would have thought he was a batsman as he scored his first ton (119) in senior cricket – an uncharacteristically well built innings. His bowling suffered from a ‘mystery’ shoulder injury, but he took 12 wickets and scored 381 runs @ 29.31 ave. Good old Lindsay Kirschberg was incredible with his numerous aches and pains. He managed to pick up an injury in almost every game of the season! Nevertheless he did play some fine cameo knocks which we needed at the time. Whilst it wasn’t his best season by his own admission, Lindsay enjoyed fielding in the slips and smirking at Akshay’s constant stream of “beginner” sledging. Rocco Giaquinto was always keen in the field and felt that he was under-bowled (127 overs?) as he would always let the boys know after the game. His bowling certainly made a difference to our side as he took 17 wickets @ 25.18 ave. As Rocco would say – if the slips could catch, he would have taken a thousand! Rocco epitomised what it means to have passion on the field, leading the way with his competitive spirit. Duncan Haigh was a great addition to the side, coming down from A2’s last season. He had his best knock against WPH Blue scoring 80no (272 runs @ 27.2). He was also handy with the ball, taking 14 wickets @ 18.86. Some of these came from half-trackers and full-bangers – as Dunc said “It was all part of the big plan”. Simon Hardy had a good start to the season, with a half-century knock at Normo Oval. Runs came hard after this, so after he was given the ball by Maxi in a one-dayer vs Kenthurst, and with Cam asking whether he should field on the other side of the fence, he took his first wicket on the first ball and ended up with the distinguished figures of 2/6 off 3 overs. Cam shut up. Maybe he should have got a bit more of a bowl during the season? Nathan Ryan enjoyed the season with 220 runs @ 31.43 and 9 wickets @ 36.88. His Geoff Marsh-like concentration at the crease contrasted the likes of Robbie, Cam and Rocco, however Jugger and some others maintained that this sort of committed batting was needed by a few more members of the team. Akshay Partharathsy had a top season with the gloves, taking 14 catches & 2 stumpings. He also did well with his mouth behind the stumps, coming up with some classic sledges. Akshay took out the prized “Dork of the week” award most times, and decidedly put his stamp on the mantle by destroying his bat in an indoor game of ‘frenchy’ when the rain came down in the final game. The injection of the Kulkarnis into the side after Christmas last year was a key factor in our “return to form”. One could say that Nishad was to the Normo B grade side what Johnny Wilkinson was to the England Rugby side. Would we have won anything without this dominating stroke-player? Nikhil also did a great job behind the scorebook, counting his brothers runs. In saying that, Nik had a great cameo knock in our last match of the season, getting an unbeaten 31 runs. All in all, a great season boys – full of many happy memories and fun times. All of us will be looking forward to next season with a keen sense of anticipation … go Normo!! Simon Hardy & Duncan Haigh Awards: Batting Award: Nishad Kulkarni 436 runs @ 62.29 Bowling Award: Rocco Giaquinto 17 wickets @ 25.18 All Rounder Award: Rob Magrath 311 runs; 25 wickets & 17 catches

26 C2 GRADE Captain – Michael Hall

While the records show that Normo C2s finished the season in 6th place and well out of the top four, they don’t show to the full extent how much this side challenged every team in the competition. On our day, with our regular team on the park, few could doubt our ability to match it with and take games from the competition leaders. In fact there were only two games during the season where there was a chance of an outright result. We saved defeat on the first occasion thanks in part to our only 100 partnership of the season between John Acheson (21*) and Jarrod Tulloch (79). Two rounds later, we dismissed Thornleigh cheaply in their second innings and required 164 off 34 overs to take outright points after losing first innings. At 1/109 with 19 overs remaining, the heavens opened and washed away what would have been a great Normo comeback. We also lost 3 games by the slimmest of margins – 1 wicket – and on each occasion we had to stage significant comebacks to put ourselves in a position to win the game. As captain, it’s when the team rallies and stages a comeback that you discover the real thrill of the game. It’s often a great catch or a tight over of bowling or a dominating display of batting that can swing things back in your favour and put the opposition under pressure. I think just about everyone had a hand in at least one of the many comebacks that we staged during the season. Also of note is the encouragement of team mates. Dave Elysee played a big part in geeing the boys up, as did Kiwi and Burgo. We lacked a bit of consistency, however several players deserve special mention for their achievements. Matt O’Connor “Kiwi” destroyed plenty of opposition batting line-ups and bowling attacks and finished the season with 354 runs and 32 wickets – a fine all-round performance. Andrew Burgess “Baby John” was also dependable with the bat racking up some 346 runs @ 28.8. Matt Salisbury shared the new ball with Kiwi and bowled as quickly as anyone in the competition, as well as showing the ability to swing the ball sharply. John Acheson racked up a fine 80 in the 3rd round (171 runs for the season) and I’m yet to find a safer pair of hands in the gully. Paul Haigh, although unorthodox in his stance, could dispatch a ball further than most bowlers appreciated – just ask the WPH-C opener who saw his first 2 balls of the innings disappear behind the Normo clubhouse. Paul made several useful scores for the team, totalling 194 runs for the season. Dave Elysee developed a reputation for getting off the mark with boundaries and made some useful contributions with the bat (131 runs @ 14.6). His real enjoyment though came from taking wickets (9 @ 15.9) with his medium-pacers. Jarrod Tulloch was another useful all-rounder, scoring 263 runs @ 18.8 and claiming 16 wickets at 18.9. He was at his best when being sledged by the opposition. John Kerr kept wicket for the majority of the season and although he doesn’t have the most glamorous keeping style, he certainly stopped plenty of leg-side rubbish from the bowlers and finished the season with 10 catches, including 5 in an innings against Thornleigh. Tony Hall made a welcome return to cricket after a 9 year break. He took more catches in slips (10) than everyone else who fielded there combined. He also relished the opportunity to keep when required and showed great natural instinct. He was able to occupy the crease for decent amounts of time, scoring 100 runs at 16.7. Jared Mason was our only recognised spinner and bowled without much luck in the early part of the season. Work commitments meant that he only took the field once after Christmas but we hope he can play full time next year. Another who was MIA after Christmas was Glen McKay. His bowling figures (8 wickets @ 13.8) showed that there was always a place in the side for him, if only we could get in contact with him. Mick Hall had a mixed year with bat (275 @ 22.9), ball (19 @ 21.7) and coin (6 from 12). The support from the team was always appreciated and the effort put in by all made the defeats a little easier to take. Thanks to Paul and John Acho for running things when I wasn’t able to. We enjoyed the efforts of some talented juniors who filled in during the season. Joel Carter, Harry Morton, Brennen Smart, Steve Smith, Brendon Scott, Craig Austin & Mitchell Magrath all made useful contributions whenever they played. Thanks guys and good luck in the future. Others that donned the whites for us (often at short notice) included Stewart Johnson, Andy Elysee, Justin Leon and Simon Riddett. To our faithful supporters (and scorers) Ev and Jess, thanks for your efforts and for putting up with countless “Remember the game when…” stories. To the Acheson’s esky, thanks for keeping the icy-poles at exactly the right temperature. Michael Hall Awards: Batting Award: Andrew Burgess 346 runs @ 28.8 Bowling Award: Matt Salisbury 22 wickets @ 17.0 All Rounder Award: Matt O’Connor 354 runs @ 27.2, 32 wickets @ 13.0

27 D GRADE ** PREMIERS **

Captain – Brad Cole Vice Captain – Dirk Drieberg Manager – Rob Darling

Our team started the season in C3 Grade and after some mixed results, the Association moved us to D Grade in Round 6. From that moment onwards, we were undefeated. Winning the D grade premiership was a fantastic achievement for the players and the club. We earned it. We fought back to win several games that could have gone the other way. Our best win was in the semi-final v Pennant Hills. We won the toss and batted. Pennant Hills bowled well, dismissing us for 119. At stumps on the first day they were 8-128. We needed an outright win to make the Final so our day 2 strategy was to finish ‘em quickly (10/136), smash enough runs (8/170 dec. at tea) and bowl them out for less than the difference (153). Penno were stonewalling at 6 down when the last 20 overs of the game commenced. Dirk Drieberg (23 wickets at 15.21) bowled the first of the last 20 overs. Third ball Dirk bowled their captain playing across the line to an away swinger. Fourth ball, batsman out LBW. Fifth ball edged to Calum Waldegrave at first slip. HAT-TRICK. We went on to win outright and made the Final. We won the Final against St Ives by scoring 224 then wasting them for 85. Chief destroyer was U/15 junior Calum Waldegrave with 4/16 including an amazing HAT-TRICK (B, LBW, B). During the season Calum scored 192 runs at 27.4 and took 7 wickets at 5.28 with left-arm medium-pacers. Calum and Patrick Muldrew (136 at 34) shared in a D Grade Association record 6th wicket partnership of 172 (Muldrew 97, Waldegrave 72, 5 sixes each) against a hapless Kenthurst. Ken Tham was our best all-round player (362 runs at 22.6 and 36 wickets at 13.5). He opened the bowling throughout with exceptional pace, endurance and economy. His batting was destructive anywhere from opener to number 5. He didn’t score a ton but should have. Ken top scored in both innings of the semi-final and returned to field after a crippling calf-muscle injury. In January, Ken and Harry Morton (U/16) shared a match winning 6th wicket partnership of 103 against Beecroft-Wahroonga (Tham 90, Morton 40). Chris Brown (U/17) also showed good all-round talent (220 runs at 18.3; 11 wickets at 13.63 off 57 overs). He is a powerful, clean hitting batsman who caused plenty of grief for opponents usually batting at 8. Chris was under-bowled but took his opportunities well. Vumsee Kodakalla (17 wickets at 20.70), Terry Sparkes and Chris Brown shared the new ball with Ken. Vumsee bowled inswing at high pace. His opening combination with Ken was the scariest in D grade. Vumsee added determination to the batting down the order. He hit the winning run against Kissing Point after joining Brad Cole (288 runs at 18) at 6/26 then continuing with Chris Brown. That was our first win. Terry Sparkes was our best strike bowler (27 wickets at 16.44 off 126 overs). Terry bowled first change or opened and took important wickets at the right time - he bowled St Ives number 4 in the final when their third wicket batters were set. Terry usually batted at number 10 where he placed a high value on his wicket. Terry’s 20 runs in the final helped us reach 224. Simon Hajduk was our best batter and only century maker this season (416 runs at 46.2, HS 118 and 8 wickets for 92 at 11.5). Simon is a consistent and classy batsman. He gets behind the ball and builds an innings. He top-scored (54) in the first innings of the final and spent 30 (or so) overs with Brad (43) breaking St Ives. Brett Salisbury (367 runs at 20.38) is an aggressive opening bat who likes to jump down the wicket and take on the bowler. He and Simon added our top partnership of the season (195, 2nd wicket v Penno, Salisbury 94, Hajduk 118). Rob Darling (182 runs at 9.1) opened the batting for all but one game. He managed the team, found players, reported results, crunched numbers and fired the boys up. Rob’s and Vumsee’s enthusiasm lifted us on the field. Tom Cole (U/14) was the usual keeper (13 dismissals) and Patrick Muldrew kept for 4 games (6 dismissals). Tom and Paddy kept well to the quicks and to Dirk. Tom bowled well with 6 wickets at 4.67 off 15 overs. Thanks to Normo juniors (& seniors) who played when we needed them: Craig Austin, Michael Gorrie, Brennen Smart, Michael Brown and Josh Cole. The little things happened after the team gelled. Dirk helped me to be a first-time captain. In the field never forget to try and make something happen. Listen to the bowlers. Look for weaknesses in the batsmen. Move the field to catch the weakness. Exert pressure. Be patient. Captaincy can be tough but it has its rewards…. Brad Cole Awards: Batting Award: Simon Hajduk 416 runs @ 46.2, HS 118 Bowling Award: Terrence Sparkes 27 wickets @ 16.44 All Rounder Award: Ken Tham 362 runs @ 22.6; 36 wickets @ 13.5

D2 GRADE Captain: Scott McLennan

The season that was came to an end one game earlier than we would have liked, but that’s cricket. It was a season of ups and downs but in the end, we made the semis and it was a good year of cricket that all of us should be proud of. All players tried their best but the stand out player was Brett Turpin who scored 528 runs (ave. 40.6) including 2 centuries and 2 fifties; also taking 37 wickets at an average of 10.38 (b/b 5/19) – he was inspirational to us all. With stats like these, he certainly won’t be allowed to play D Grade in 2005-06. Rob O'Connor never let us down with both the bat and ball and had a great year, scoring a total of 305 runs @ 20.33 average, including a highest score of 63. He also took 29 wickets @ 17.41 average – it would have been hard without him. Hugh Martin (phat head) was our finest fielder with countless number of classic catches and bodyline (well headline) diving to save runs, when called upon to bowl never let his captain down, taking 16 wickets at an average of 11.125, Hugh was also a handy batsman with a highest score of 42. Scott McLennan (humpty dumpty) was good with the bat, scoring a total of 493 runs including his highest score of 104no. He also chipped in with 10 wickets. Danny McLennan made some useful contributions with the bat, scoring 140 runs @ 28.0 (HS 59no). He also bolstered our attack with 15 wickets @ 16.9 ave. off only 48 overs – a very good strike rate. Michael Gorrie (cory) started the year as a #9 batsman but worked his way up to opener, having the best year I've ever seen him play – hopefully many more good years to come as soon as he learns to keep his head down for a whole innings. Phill Norton is the meaning of team player – never a negative word out of his mouth and ended up being a key role in our team as the wicket-keeper, when called up the order to #6 in the semi-final he didn't fail to produce, making his best score of the year. Ross Stevens (jemima) was also one of our great fielders taking some rip-snorters and chasing anything in his direction (or Gorrie’s), also our greatest sledger, towards the end of the year, he really improved his batting playing some of the greatest innings of his cricket career. James Fuller was another of our great fielders / sledgers who also scored his highest score with the bat this year including a huge 6 straight back over the bowler’s head. Andrew Thomson (tomo) was great with the ball breaking a lot of partnerships (10 wickets @ 26.6), also with his knowledge he helped me out with a lot of the technical side of things. He looked promising with the bat when he kept his head down. Pete Krisenthal started up the order but welcomed the chance to bat down the order which in the end worked out better for him and the team. He also took his first catch in a couple of seasons. John Anderson (little ted) was away towards the end of the season but when he was there was excellent at seeing out the new ball – another one of our players who if he kept his head down could be a good batsman, also taking his best figures (3/28) when getting his chance to bowl. Last but not least Jason Higgins (frullet) who missed a lot of the year due to injury but on his return took 5/14 including a hat-trick – well done mate. He took 13 wickets @ 6.46 average. I would also like to send a big thank you to Simon Krisenthal (U/13) who showed up weekend after weekend to field and was rewarded with a game, scoring 1* and taking 1/14 when bowling. All in all, thanks for the season boys and hope to see you all down here next year for another great season. Scott McLennan

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Normanhurst Cricket Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the Pennant Hills Bowling Club, 52 Yarrara Road, Pennant Hills, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 8th June 2005. Current office bearers will briefly report on the achievements of the past season and the Treasurer will present the yearly accounts. There will be the important election of officers for 2005-06 and other general business. If you wish to stand for one of the Committee positions, please notify the Secretary or myself prior to the AGM. If you would like a particular issue raised at the AGM, please advise our Secretary, Rob Darling, in writing by 20 May so that all members can be made aware of any special topics for discussion. Please attend this meeting to support the future of the club.

SPONSORSHIP

Special mention should be made of our major sponsor, Pennant Hills Bowling Club (PHBC). This year saw NCC’s players and parents make use of the fantastic facilities provided by PHBC. PHBC has become our club’s venue for the annual team photos night, regular committee meetings, and senior players gathering on Saturday evenings to embellish their achievements of the afternoon. The senior players’ bowls day also proved that after many of us are too old to play cricket, the greens at PHBC will provide us with the regular competition we crave. One of the highlights of the season was the parent / son bowls day at PHBC, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and will find its way into the NCC calendar of annual events. If you were unable to make use of PHBC’s excellent facilities this year, please take the chance tonight to have a look around and maybe in the future support our sponsor who has supported our cricket club so well this season. To the committee, staff and management at PHBC, thank you. Your support over the past 12 months has been fantastic and we hope your involvement with NCC has been as much of a success as we know your assistance to our club has been this year ….. may it continue for many years to come.
