ESPAÑOL

Teacher: Señorita Bruemmer Email: [email protected] Materials: ✏ Notebook/Folder & pen/pencil ✏ Cell Phone/Computer/Tablet COURSE DESCRIPTION In this course, our goal will be to acquire . “Acquiring” a language is very different from “learning” a language. Acquiring is something that happens to you instead of something that you make happen. When you learned how to speak your first language, you acquired it naturally by listening to other people speak it around you for a long time; not by studying it. Therefore, almost all of our class time will be spent USING SPANISH--NOT using English (speaking in English) to talk about Spanish. The main focus will be on listening and reading; speaking and writing skills will be acquired throughout the year. Those skills will come naturally as you take in more and more Spanish by listening and reading, but they will not be a major focus of the course. We will focus our class time on the acquisition of high frequency structures (the most frequently used words in a language) Students will learn more than this, but will only be assessed on the target structures. We will use these structures in class activities such as listening to songs, class discussions, creating stories, games, songs and cultural explorations and talking about ourselves in SPANISH. Students will be expected to recognize them when reading and listening, and in time, be able to produce them in speech and writing.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS – Your to Success! Keys 1. LOOK & LISTEN with the intent to understand 2. One person speaks and the others look & listen 3. Support the flow of conversation 4. Do your 50% in class discussions/participation 5. Nothing on desks unless told otherwise 6. Avoid using English when possible

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES teléfoNO ZONE CELL PHONE is never allowed to be out and in use without permission from the teacher. There are many games and applications we will use throughout the year that we will use during class and I will ask of you to access them outside of class. *You will be given detailed instructions on when it is okay to use cellphones/computers/earphones. 2 STRIKE POLICY enforced if found on phone/computer when not instructed: 1st Strike:Verbal Warning 2nd Strike: cell phone/computer will be taken for the remainder of class and demerit issued.

BELL WORK-¡CAMPANADA! ● There will almost always be work waiting for you to begin as you enter the class. It is the students responsibility to begin the work AS SOON AS THE BELL RINGS for class. ● Once the bell rings a timer will start for 4 minutes to give students enough time to complete. ● If students are asked to write in the bell work they can use a notebook. ● This work will not be graded daily nor for 100% accuracy; however, there will be “random” check-ins added as an interpersonal grade to see if students are giving effort and completing assignments.

SPANISH MODE -¡NO MÁS INGLÉS! We will try to keep class in Spanish most of the time; however at times I will need to explain instructions for activity, grammar, translations in English.

SPANISH MODE→ during this time class will be conducted 100% in SPANISH. ● Most important job during this time is LISTEN ATTENTIVELY & BE ENGAGED* ● Nothing should be on desks at this time unless instructed otherwise. ● The classroom rules are in full effect during this time to ensure LANGUAGE ACQUISITION ● Able to earn “rewards” when as a class we stick to SPANISH ● “Celebration of Knowledge” (Quick Quizzes) of what was discussed and comprehended during SPANISH MODE.

PASSWORD-CONTRASEÑA ● In order to enter the room students must recite the PASSWORD. ● Passwords are an easy way to memorize useful phrases in the language. ● The password will change weekly. ● It is a short and simple phrase in Spanish that will be beneficial to add to vocabulary and use during class discussion.

Magic Cards- “TARJETAS MÁGICAS” ● These cards will be used to conduct “random check-ins” assessing Listening, Speaking, Reading Comprehension after a class activity. ● Students will be assessed during this time. + Able to answer/give effort in response and comprehension of material - Not following conversation/unable to answer/No effort given to comprehend. ● At the end of each quarter the average of the marks earned will be entered into the gradebook to reflect an INTERPERSONAL GRADE. (mostly +=A/Mostly - = C)

ABSENT STUDENTS Always Check Google Classroom for assignments posted on the date(s) you were gone. When you return to school- see me BEFORE class get missing work. If you know you will be gone in advance- let me know and I can try and go over work with you before the absence. HOMEWORK & LATEWORK ● Homework will be assigned regularly and given a due date (usually the following class). ● If students do not complete homework on time you will receive a 0 OR if eventually turned in you will receive ½ credit. ● Other late work is only accepted under special circumstances that have been communicated between the student and teacher. ● If a student is absent when homework is assigned they will have 1 day from the time they return to complete the homework and it will not be considered late. GRADING on PROFICIENCY NOT on rehearsal/memorization*: Student’s grades will reflect their LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY -what they are able to do with the language in terms of speaking, writing, listening and reading in REAL WORLD situations, in NON REHEARSED and SPONTANEOUS context.

*Grades in language classrooms based off of grammar, rehearsed/forced output in the language do not provide proof of language acquisition. This is why we have so many previous students who state “I took 3-4 years of highschool Spanish and I can’t speak/understand ANYTHING!”

There are different levels of Proficiency in language acquisition. Beginner→ Novice→ Intermediate→ Advanced→ Superior

Each Spanish Class/Level has a different Proficiency Expectation to attain: SPANISH 1: SPANISH 1 HONORS/ SPANISH 2: Novice-High Intermediate- Low

Student’s language proficiency will be evaluated in the 3 modes of communication: 1. Interpretive 2. Interpersonal 3. Presentational. GRADED CATEGORIES SPANISH 1: SPANISH 1 HONORS/SPANISH 2: Interpretive 40% Interpretive 30% Listening/Reading Listening/Reading Presentational: 10% Presentational: 15% Writing/ Speaking Writing/ Speaking Interpersonal Com. 30% Interpersonal Com. 30% Participation/Homework/ Participation/ Homework/ Tests/Midterm/Final/Projects 20% Tests/Midterm/Final/Projects 25%
