Bedfont & Feltham v Colliers Wood United0 The Buildbase FA Vase, First Round Proper Saturday 12th October 2019. Kick-Off: 3.00pm Volume 7, Issue 9

Good afternoon everyone.

Welcome to The Orchard for our ninth home match of season 2019-20. This afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Colliers Wood United Football Club; and our three match officials for this Buildbase FA Vase fixture. We trust you enjoy your brief stay with us and have a safe journey home afterwards.

Our visitors, known as The Wood, are currently in 4th place in the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Last weekend, they suffered a 1-5 defeat at the hands of CB Hounslow United. We last met in the league in 2016-17 and lost 0-3 away, but won 3-2 at home. The Wood reached this round of the FA Vase by beating Wick 4-0 in the First Round Qualifying and Croydon 3-1 in the Second Round Qualfying.

Last Saturday, we fought a strong-ish Dorking Wanderers Reserves side and to the neutral supporter, a seven-goal match was well worth the £5 admission fee. On the other hand, having been 2-0 up at half-time, then 2-1 and 3-1 it was a bit of a shock to have lost the match 3-4. The visitors’ last goal was scored in injury time.

On Tuesday evening, we hosted Premier Division side Molesey in the First Round of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup. Kelvin Karanja opened the scoring after 10 minutes and the score sat at 1-0 until just before half time. Molesey scored two quick goals and we were awarded a penalty, which Kelvin Karanja scored from. The second half saw another goal from Kelvin, and two from Michael Capon, with the final score being 5-2. We will now play Hanworth Villa in the Second Round.

We’re back at home again next Saturday when Kensington & Ealing Borough visit The Orchard. Following that match, we’re “away” to our tenants, British Airways in the Division One Challenge Cup. An updated fixture list can be found on the middle pages of this programme.

Don’t forget that our tenants, British Airways are at home to Jersey Bulls this evening. Kick-off is at 7.30pm so why not stay and watch that match?

A full catalogue of last season’s programmes is on our website, and this season’s are being added as we go - https://www.bedfontandfelthamfc.co.uk/content.php?pg=downloads&pd=1047

We will continue producing printed programmes for our matches, although there may be some occasions when this is not possible. An online programme will be available in these circumstances, and we will announce this via social media and on our website at least 24 hours before the match.

Enjoy today’s match and see you again soon. Rob – Editor.

Manager’s Notes

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Colliers Wood enjoy their short stay with us.

Another set of programme notes and another mixed bag to comment on. Last Saturday, we threw away 2x 2 goal leads against a much- improved Dorking Wanderers outfit. A good, young, attacking side who punished us in a poor final 10 minutes. Our next league game against Kensington & Ealing Boro already becomes a vital one as we look to stay in touch with the top 6. Thankfully, some of our injured lads are starting to slowly return.

Our cup form appears to be the exact opposite of our league form at the moment. Out of 6 games we have won 5 and some of our best performances have come in the 5 different competitions. Tuesday night we hosted Premier side Molesey and apart from a lacklustre 5 minutes we did very well throughout. Despite all the commotion just before and during half time, our lads came out and gave an assured, professional performance to put us through to the next round.

Today, again we will be underdogs as we entertain a Premier Division side. Not many will be giving us a chance but I fully expect our lads to give it everything they have to try and reach the Second Round for the first time in the club’s short history.

I hope you enjoy the game, thank you for your support.

Adam

Introducing Our Visitors – Colliers Wood United

The club, one of the oldest in the country, and which has now been in existence for 144 years, received a well-deserved recognition award from the FA for 125 years of playing football during 2011.

There is a wall memorial at the Surrey FA headquarters in Dorking acknowledging The Wood as the second oldest senior football club in Surrey having been formed in 1874 (four years after Reigate Priory FC).

Collliers Wood United FC was founded way back in 1874 and the early years of their existence were spent in the Wimbledon and Sutton leagues before moving on to the Surrey Intermediate League (Southern Division). During the late sixties and early seventies, the club were members of the Surrey Senior League for a short time, playing in the newly formed division one where they won the league title in 1969-70. The reserves won their division in 1970-71 going undefeated.

Over the years, “The Wood” have reached a number of Surrey FA Cup Finals. In 1988- 89 they lost 1-2 to Bradbank Sports in the Intermediate Cup Final. In 1991-92 they beat Woking & Horsell 4-0 in the final of the same competition. The reserves reached the final of the 1988-89 and 1989-90 Lower Junior Cup but were beaten on both occasions.

The local recreation ground prevented the progress of the club due to the limited facilities and a search for a new ground was launched. Adequate facilities were found at Wibbandune Sports Ground in 1991 and the ground has steadily improved since then.

2001-2 saw the club enter the Surrey County Senior League where they finished a creditable 5th. The following season, they finished as runners up. In 2002-3, the league amalgamated with the Combined Counties League and the club were founder members of the new division 1 where they finished as runners up and were promoted to the Premier Division.

They have continued to improve. In 2004-5, they finished 14th of the 24 clubs. The following season, they finished fourth and had a fine FA Vase run, beating Chichester City United, Raynes Park Vale and Greenwich Borough, before losing to VCD Athletic in the 2nd round proper.

In 2006-7 they entered the FA Cup for the first time, defeating Chipstead after a replay before succumbing to Worthing 0-3.

After a brief ground share at Croydon FC, the club moved back to Wibbandune where ground improvements included the addition of excellent flood-lighting, a new covered terrace and a 120 seat stand.

Colliers Wood United – continued

In March 2012, the club added a new away team changing room; new spectator ground lavatories and re-laid the entire playing surface including drainage thanks to a £71,000 grant from the Football Association. They also reached the 2011-12 final of the League Cup at Farnborough FC on 4th May v Guernsey FC in front of 667 spectators, which they lost 0-2 after extra time, becoming the first club to keep a 90 minute clean sheet against The Islanders.

Following a second renovation of the pitch in April, the club returned to Wibbandune in July 2013 and the Under 18 youth section was re-started.

In 2014-15, Wood reached the FA Vase 4th round (last 32 nationally) and the Surrey Senior Cup quarter finals for the first time in their history. They reached the final of the League Cup once again in 2014-15 but, once again, they lost in extra time, this time 1-2 to Camberley Town in front of 385 spectators at Woking FC.

On March 8th 2016, the club were awarded the FA Charter Standard accreditation by the Football Association.

The club won the CCL Sportsmanship Award for 2015-16 having received just 32 cautions throughout the season.

In 2016-17, the reserve team won the SSEC Junior League Cup and were runners-up in the Surrey FA Junior Cup.

Wood 1st Team reached the Surrey FA Senior Cup quarter finals for only the second time in 2017-18.

Record CCL Win 9-1 v Bedfont 2009 Record Other Win – 9-2 v Lingfield 2014 (FA Vase) Record CCL Home Attendance - 151 versus Guildford City on Friday 6th August 2010. Record Overall Home Attendance – 288 v AFC Wimbledon (Surrey Senior Cup) 2010 FA Vase Best Season - 2014-15 - 4th Round Proper (lost in extra time 2-4 at Ascot United).

What Did You Call Me - Part 1

We all know of Blues, United, Rovers, Reds etc. but what about the names that don't immediately explain themselves?

The first team that we will look at is the team that inspired this article, Stamford AFC. The Daniels, for that is their nickname, play in the NPL but where did their unusual moniker come from? You would be excused for thinking that it was, maybe, a hangover from an old works team name. There are, after all, many examples of teams that have retained names from their days as the sports team attached to a factory. However, in the case of Stamford it is far more obscure. Daniel Lambert is, in fact, where the nickname originates from. Daniel who? You may say. Well, Daniel Lambert was recorded as the heaviest ever man in Britain. He died in 1809, in the town of Stamford, weighing in at an incredible 52 stone (give or take the odd pound). He is buried in the churchyard of St Martin's which lies just a few hundred yards from the club's home, Borderville Stadium.

Moving South somewhat, we come to the Northamptonshire town of Wellingborough where we find two United Counties teams and two unusual nicknames to go with them. Starting with the UCL Premier side, Wellingborough Town, or the Doughboys as they are known. If you know anything about the Wellingborough area, home of Whitworths flour manufacturers, you would think flour, dough, Doughboys. It seems to make sense. However, the nickname is thought to derive from a local speciality "ock 'n' dough" comprising of hock of bacon and vegetables wrapped in pastry. A Northamptonshire pasty, you could say. The other Wellingborough team, Whitworth, are known as the Flourmen. This is no real surprise as the team was originally called Whitworths and, presumably, was the football team of the Whitworth flour factory some 200 yards from the ground. The strange thing about Whitworth is that the connection to the flour company is not mentioned on the website or on Wikipedia at all. In fact, the official website history states the team was formed as result of the Wellingborough Ideal Clothiers club disbanding. So, maybe there is another reason for the Flourmen nickname? Maybe someone will enlighten us?

From Northamptonshire we move North-West to Halesowen and a bit of a mystery nickname. Halesowen Town are known as The Yeltz. The have been known as The Yeltz for as long as anyone can remember. However, no-one really seems to have a good explanation for this odd name. The official club website (http://www.ht-fc.com/history/club-history/why-the-yeltz.html) has an entire section dedicated to the question Why the Yeltz? and, as it states, the truth is - nobody really knows. I'll let you decide which theory seems to be the most realistic. My personal favourite is the least likely (and most likely one to be an April Fool joke) about the Hungarian player Pungus Catfich.

From the industrial West Midlands to leafy West London and Hampton & Richmond Borough FC, on the banks of the Thames. The club is known as The Beavers and, with such proximity to the river, you may think with good cause. But wait....beavers...in London. Maybe there is more to this name than meets the eye. Well, maybe. Hampton & Richmond play at The Beveree, named after the house whose grounds the stadium once stood in. There is a nearby road called Beaver Close and an ancient stream flows under the pitch, into the Thames a few hundred yards away. So, the nickname could come from the name of the house or it could be a reference to the animal which may have lived on the banks of the river before it became extinct in the UK. We may never know for sure.

Not a million miles away to the west lies the Surrey town of Chertsey, home of Combined Counties Premier side Chertsey Town. Here we find another unusual nickname, The Curfews. This is apparently a reference to a famous local bell that hangs in St Peter's Church. This was used to signal the start of the curfew in town each evening (now used ceremonially only, of course) and may date back as far as 1235. Details on the Chertsey Curfew Bell can be found here (http://www.stpeterschertsey.org/bells/curfew.htm).

Our History

Bedfont & Feltham Football club was formed in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Bedfont Football & Social Club with Feltham FC, taking the place of Feltham in the step 6 Combined Counties Division 1. The changes bought some decent results; two 5th place finishes in their first two seasons.

The 2015/16 season saw a runners-up spot, 3 points behind CB Hounslow United and this was good enough for promotion to the Premier Division.

The club only lasted at the higher level for one season, finishing second- bottom and some 13 points adrift of safety. Season 2017-18 saw the club finish in 17th place. In the summer of 2018, Adam Bessent joined from Staines Lammas and their loss was Bedfont & Feltham's gain.

Season 2018-19 started very well for Bedfont & Feltham seeing them unbeaten at the top of the league. Getting off to a cracking start helped: an 11-0 win over Bagshot earned the TalkSPORT 2 'Non-League Team of the Week' award.

The club held their heads high and were one of the forerunners throughout the season; suffering their first league defeat in November. Further losses in January and February saw the crown slip slightly, leading to an eventual fifth-place finish.

In the FA Cup, 2015-16 saw the club's best FA Cup run as they beat London Tigers and AFC Hayes (both after replays). A tough test against AFC Rushden & Diamonds awaited them in the 1st Qualifying Round where the run ended, despite a credible performance in the 2-1 defeat. The FA Vase has proved trickier, the best run being the 1st Round in 2013 where they lost 1-0 at Welwyn Garden City. Local cup wins include the CCL Division 1 Challenge Cup, lifted in 2015 as they beat Worcester Park 4-3 on penalties in the final as well as the Middlesex Premier Cup a year earlier.

Adam Bessent has brought in Emil Kot as Head Coach, alongside Mark Goff as Coach, and the club is continuing its foray into youth football, with teams from Under 8s to Under 16s.

The club has retained the FA Charter Standard and looks forward to season 2019-20 with great enthusiasm.

Hilltop Grazing.

Some dubbed it the Little House on the Prairie. An old brick farmhouse, smartly painted in white with red trim, the facade enlivened by a projecting wooden window frame on the first floor. Of all the dressing rooms in non-league football, it was perhaps the most distinctive. A genuine cottage to generate a flicker of recognition in Fulham, perhaps? It used to be home to Stanley United, another of those towns perched on a ridge as the Pennines rise up from the Vale of Durham. Just up the road from Tow Law, Stanley Crook (as distinct from the Stanley between Consett and Gateshead) was another place with a reputation for Arctic weather in the height of summer and apocryphal snowdrifts swamping the streets in July. It was also home to a plucky Northern League battler. In 1946, United were the league’s first post- war champions; in the early 60s they won two titles either side of a second-placed finish behind Crook Town, rivals from just down the hill. The same rivals clashed in the FA Cup First Round in 1954, Stanley’s best cup run ended at Millfield; a truncated road to Wembley that barely left the banks of the Wear in its path through four qualifying rounds. But by 1974 the club was rock bottom of the league and handing in its resignation. Reformed to join the Wearside League’s freshly-minted second division in 1984, Stanley United were fondly remembered by the Northern League. The local rivalry with Tow Law prompted an annual pre-season friendly – the edition I saw ended 4-4, the strong Tow Law team of the mid-90s pegged back by their less illustrious neighbours – while Northern League affections were strong enough to include the Hill Top Ground was included in the first ever Groundhop. For many visitors the evocative, elevated location, plus the Little House on the Prairie, was the highlight of the weekend. As recently as 2005 the ground was still spick and span and seeing action in local football, but by the start of the 2006-07 season it was no longer in regular use. Stanley United had folded and dropped out of the Wearside League in 2003; Crook Wanderers briefly took up the name and the ground but soon went back down the hill to continue in the Crook & District League (today they play as Crook Town Wanderers). Unused, if not unloved, the ground began to crumble. The little house burned down; where once fans lamented the clumsiness of a carthorse centre-forward, passers-by can spot a couple of genuine quadrupeds grazing. Today, with rusting goalposts intact, it’s a farmer’s field; the covered stand on the far touchline now a store for fodder. The grass banks that stood for a terrace back in the day are overgrown, the perimeter fence twisted into bizarre loops. The surrounding area is steadily being swallowed by housing – the Methodist chapel next door was sold for development in 2015 – and it’s hard to imagine the old football ground escaping that fate for much longer. NON-LEAGUE Day celebrates its tenth edition today – a simple idea from founder James Doe has mushroomed into an established part of the calendar. James – a QPR fan – came up with the concept when he visited Tavistock Town in a pre- season game in 2010 and that led to him visiting local club Harrow Borough. So each season during an international break, NLD encourages fans down to their local team. From there it has grown and grown. In the build-up to this weekend, Premier League clubs were tweeting about their local clubs and Prostate Cancer UK and Kick It Out continue to show their support each year. Perhaps you’re reading this today at your first Non-League game – we’re sure you will enjoy the experience. Many clubs have benefited from the extra publicity and media spotlight the day brings and that is something to be welcomed. It’s not easy when the game at the highest level is everywhere. Finding column inches or air time often needs an angle and NLD is just that. Of course, we can trot out many clichés about Non-League football. The players don’t dive – some do – that clubs are more welcoming – most are – and you can speak to the players in the bar after the game. And it’s affordable! Non-League football will mean different things to different people but there’s no doubting it is at the heart of the game in this country. Where else would four-figure crowds watch a game in the eighth tier? Sometimes even lower. Non-League football is to be celebrated and treasured. But we shouldn’t be blind to the fact a number of clubs are struggling to make ends meet. That getting through the season is an achievement. Costs are high and it is hard to compete. For those that have the resources, there are more that don’t. A particular issue facing these levels is volunteering. There aren’t enough of them! Giving up your time can be a rewarding experience and the more savvy clubs are making better use of people’s skills. Look around you in the crowd today, there are people from all backgrounds, industries and trades. Look at yourself, you will have skills that are invaluable to a Non-League club even if you don’t realise it. It doesn’t have to be all the hours under the sun. Just putting up posters to advertise games or delivering leaflets in the local area can make a big difference. And that all makes for a healthy, thriving Non-League. Enjoy the day!

Game of the People

Fulham and Charlton show why the Championship is so compelling HOW OFTEN does a crowd filter out of a football stadium feeling they haven’t really been entertained? All too frequently, there’s a collective shrug of the shoulders, comments like, “not bad” or “they tried”, although supporters of the winning team console themselves with the result, a case of points over performance, function over form. Not so the 18,500 people who witnessed Fulham against Charlton, a four-goal thriller that could have been won by either side. Fast, furious stiff, a little niggle here and there, and a couple of ejector seat goals. What’s more, the atmosphere was, at times, intense, boosted by a healthy contingent from South London, fans who are clearly enjoying Charlton’s return to the Championship. Fulham’s form had taken a turn for the better again with two wins, against Wigan and Reading. When they faced Wigan a week earlier, they had not won for five league and cup games, now they are unbeaten in five, thanks to the 2-0 victory against the Latics and a midweek mauling of Reading (4-1). Draws can be destructive when you’re chasing promotion, but stick a couple of wins in a sequence and it suddenly looks far rosier. Charlton, meanwhile, had won half of their 10 league games and were sitting comfortably around mid-table, just one point behind Fulham. A couple of years ago, Charlton looked like a very unhappy club, largely due to the fans’ dislike of Roland Duchâtelet, the Belgian portfolio club owner. Charlton were relegated to League One in 2016 and they spent three seasons at that level before winning promotion via the play-offs in 2019. The club was losing more fans than any London club in the previous few years, but there’s a sense of revival about Charlton at the moment, even though they are said to have the lowest budget in the Championship. They are averaging 18,000 at their home games this season. Duchâtelet wants to off-load the club, but he’s asking £ 60 million, a figure that deters would-be buyers. He told the Charlton fans that he’s been trying to sell for two years, but pointed to the annual losses suffered by Championship clubs as a deterrant. “It has become unaffordable for nearly anyone to own a football club in the Championship, meaning it is not easy to find a suitable buyer.” At least Charlton fans have a manager they like in , although he almost left in the summer after initially turning down his current contract. Bowyer started his playing career with Charlton before joining Leeds United in 1996 and also played for West Ham United and Newcastle United, among others. He’s the proverbial “one of our own” that fans love to crow about. Bowyer has done a lot to unify the club during a fractious period at the Valley. Certainly, the mood among the Charlton fans at Craven Cottage seemed buoyant and positive. They were in fine voice throughout the 90 minutes, letting us know that they “hate Millwall” and that their club had won the FA Cup. They had plenty to sing about in the first half as their team went in at the interval a goal to the good, a neat low finish from Conor Gallagher, scored after 41 minutes. Charlton had looked the better side for much of the first period, but Fulham improved considerably in the second half and equalised on 55 minutes with a superb strike from Ivan Cavaleiro. Fulham were level for less than two minutes as Macauley Bonne headed Charlton back into the lead. Finally, Aleksandar Mitrović scored from close range in the 63rd minute to make it two each. Both sides could have snatched victory, but it was Fulham that went closest, Anthony Knockaert crossing and “Mitro”, who seemed to enjoy a robust afternoon, striking the crossbar. It was exciting stuff and kept the crowd interested right until the final whistle. It does look as though the Championship is going to be a tight affair again this season, but Fulham, and their entertaining brand of play, should feature in the race for promotion. Charlton are not far away, either, although the 46-game programme will test them, but on the evidence of their draw with highly fancied Fulham, Bowyer’s side shouldn’t have much trouble keeping away from danger. This was a game involving two teams who were keen to play football and go for a result. It was 90 minutes that made you feel glad you had a Fulham season ticket in your back pocket!
