Welcome to Abbeville. This directory is dedicated to all the citizens and the businesses that support this historical city. First off…. Why is Abbeville known as the "Birthplace" of the Confederacy? After the election of Abraham Lincoln, the South Carolina legislature asked each district to elect delegates for the Session Convention to be held in Columbia the following December. The first of these meetings was held in Abbeville on November 22, 1860 when over 3,000 people converged to hear what was to known as the "Session Speeches". Just one month later, the country was at war.
Secondly… Why is Abbeville known as the "Deathbed" of the Confederacy? With the Confederacy in shambles, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his stash of treasure fled Virginia and headed south in separate convoys. Davis stopped for a night in Abbeville at the home of his friend Armistead Burt, where his wife had also taken refuge. It was here in the front parlor that Jefferson Davis acknowledged the dissolution of the Confederate Government during his last official cabinet meeting. After Davis departed Abbeville, he and his entourage were captured near Irwinville, Georgia. There are many theories on where the actual treasures ended up, but there is solid documentation that its was stored in a vault in Abbeville's town square at least twice. ABBEVILLE- The village of Abbeville originated from land and a freshwater spring donated by Revolutionary war General Andrew Pickens. Abbeville was so named after a town in France, honoring the homeland of the French Huguenots, who settled here. Since its interception, Abbeville has been a fore front of American History, especially during the civil war. Abbeville's intriguing past is still evident today as you walk through the original town square and historic homes. Take in the elegance of the Abbeville Oprah House. explore Lake Session, browse the unique shops and eateries, and yes...you can even see the original site of the freshwater spring that started it all.
CALHOUN FALLS- is situated in a southwestern pocket of Abbeville County where the Savannah River feeds into scenic Lake Russell. The town was developed in the 1890's as a railroad junction. A cotton mill was constructed, the Bank of Calhoun Falls opened, and the town was officially incorporated. After the decline of the textile industry, the Richard B. Russell Dam was completed in the 1980's and ultimately created Lake Russell. Calhoun Falls is rightfully known as the "Gateway to Adventure" because of its abundant of natural resources such as Calhoun Falls State Park and the Blue Hole Recreation Area.
DONALDS- Donald's is a historic farming community that began as a trading post on the South Carolina frontier with the Cherokee. One of the original Scottish-Irish settlers here was the Donald's family, from which the town was formally named. Donald's soon developed into a bustling railroad junction centered on agrarian life spread across gentle rolling farmlands. Much of this character is still retained in Donald's today, which you can experience through the antique shopping and taking in the historic sites.
DUE WEST- Another formal trading post is Due West, a peaceful town that soon became known as "The Holy City". In 1835, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARP) established a classical school here, which eventually became what is now the sprawling 85 acre campus of Erskine College. Due West has all the young vibrancy that a college town can bring, while also offering deep historic roots found in the tree lined streets dotted with historic houses.
LOWNDESVILLE- Situated at the headwaters of Lake Russell is this little town, one of the first settlements established along the Savannah River. Once a thriving farm and railroad town, Lowndesville was the site of a great fire in the 1920's that destroyed each and every one of the original buildings in the town center. The creation of Lake Russell and its ideal location on the Savannah, has ushered in a new era for Lowndesville which offers an abundance of outdoor adventures at both "Jim Rampey Recreation Area" and "McCalla State Natural Area".

www.countyofabbeville.org The Abbeville County Museum located at 309 Poplar Street, Abbeville, SC is devoted to the acquisition, study, preservation, and exhibition of memorabilia from throughout Abbeville County. The three-story Abbeville County Museum was built c. 1854 and is one of 10 public buildings constructed statewide by the State Public Works Commission. The building was designed by Jacob Graves, who possibly apprenticed with Robert Mills several years earlier. Located one block from the “Abbeville Town Square”, the Museum is the oldest public building in the area. The building became home to the Abbeville County Museum in 1976. The Museum benefits the community as a historical site that provides exhibits that appeal to all ages, all walks of life and various interests. It has become a depositary for valuable Abbeville County artifacts. The Museum is open on Saturday from 2:00 p. m. until 5:00 p. m. and by appointment by calling the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce at 864-366- 4600.

In 1858, the growing and more affluent congregation decided to build a larger and finer structure. The architect, George E. Walker of Columbia, found inspiration for his design in the magnificent Gothic cathedrals of France. They were quite appropriate, since Abbeville was named by John de la Howe for his native home, Abbeville, France. The cornerstone was laid on June 27, 1859, and the church was consecrated on November 4, 1860. The nave is 43 feet wide and 81 feet long; the walls are of solid handmade brick, 3 feet thick for the side walls but thicker under the soaring steeple, which is over 120 feet tall., Trinity holds a virtual "library" of rare 19th-century American stained glass, including at least eight windows dating to the church's erection in 1859-60. , Also see the Steeple Bell & the pews all being made of single planks, both seats and backs.
