AVON OLD FARMS SCHOOL

Student Handbook Rules, Regulations, and Information for the Academic Year

{ 2012-13 } Mission Statement Avon Old Farms School strives to be the best school for boys by cultivating young men of integrity who honor wisdom, justice, service, and the pursuit of truth. We promote intellectual, creative, and emotional growth in our students by providing a structured, supportive learning environment that encourages self-discovery and social responsibility. %

Our core values are essential to fulfilling our mission. On pages 37 and 38 we list and define these core values and we strive to incorporate these values into our residential life programs throughout the year. This year we will focus on three core values: responsibility, altruism and tolerance.

RESPONSIBILITY: Students are encouraged to abide by the principles in which they believe. We hope their experience here will help them to develop the fortitude to confront injustice and to make honorable decisions which support their values. Students are urged to take ownership for their actions and develop this important character trait by realizing that they can control their own path in life. If Avon students courageously stand by their beliefs, they will develop the moral fiber necessary to become important civic role models and leaders in their adult lives.

ALTRUISM: We believe that a good man possesses an unselfish concern for the needs of others. Through service to his school, community, and the world, a student comes to understand the true meaning of citizenship and the intrinsic rewards derived from being other-centered rather than self-centered. By acknowledging the connection that all humans share, a person embraces the responsibility each of us bears to help those in need. By participating widely in the programs offered through Avon Outreach, an Avonian will reap the enriching benefits that accompany service endeavors.

TOLERANCE: , our founder, said ‘The ways in which we differ are far more important than the ways in which we are alike.” At Avon, we believe that the strength of our community emanates from the rich diversity found within our student body. By appreciating the opportunity for personal growth that the differences among us represent, we also honor the unique gifts that each of us brings to our school. Succeeding in our Global Village requires us to respect people different than we are, and to confront prejudice wherever it exists.
