Tax Sand Traps for Ernie Els and Other Pro Athletes South Africa’S Ernie Els Won the 141St British Open and Should Be Relishing His Success, Not Worrying About Taxes
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER Jul. 24 2012 — 12:00 am Tax Sand Traps For Ernie Els And Other Pro Athletes South Africa’s Ernie Els won the 141st British Open and should be relishing his success, not worrying about taxes. Even less successful professional golfers may not engender much sympathy. The money seems incredible, the work seems better than Ernie Els of South Africa holds the Claret Jug, 'The what most of us do for a Golf Champion Trophy' after winning the 2012 British Open Golf Championship at Royal Lytham and St living, and the adoring fans Annes in Lytham, north-west England, on July 22, 2012. Els won the championship with a score of 273, and media seem generally one shot clear of Adam Scott of Australia. (Image supportive. And think of that credit: AFP/Getty Images via @daylife) endorsement income! Still, if you’ve ever waged a tax battle—or even had difficulty trying to figure out something that is supposedly simple—you might feel differently. Imagine not just dealing with the IRS or your own home country’s tax rules. Suppose you earn income in various countries and must apportion it and pay tax in many different places? Welcome to the world of the professional athlete. For the British Open, it isn’t only winnings that are at stake. It is also endorsement income. The UK’s tax collector, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, does a shipshape job of revenue collection and administration, some say better than the IRS. In fact, even those who did not make The Open cut and didn’t earn money from the tournament must pay taxes on endorsements. -
General Managers Update
March 2016 GENERAL MANAGERS UPDATE We are well into the ‘swing’ of things for the year! This month we welcome a new greens keeper, Campbell Devaney who has joined the team. We wish him well in his job at the Club and what a great time for him to start with the greens staff getting the course ready for the Lawnmaster! We have also just farewelled Etienne from the Pro Shop who at very short notice has moved back to Auckland for family reasons. We wish him well for the future. The Lawnmaster week is fast approaching. See later in this newsletter for the list of events and how you can be involved. Summer is quickly heading towards the finish line, which also means Twilight Golf has only three more nights (March 4, 11 and April 1) as we have a break because of the Lawnmaster and Easter. Make sure you make the most of the last weeks of daylight savings and play in this Friday night event. Tee off is between 3.00pm and 5.30pm and there are Mad Butcher vouchers up for grabs for the winners. Remember that Friday Night Dining is also on after Twilight and the meals are just fantastic and well-priced. If you haven’t been down you are missing out as these are great nights at the Club. The pennants season is under way and the Club’s teams have got off to a good start. Keep an eye on our website for regular updates on how the teams are going. Happy Golfing! Michael Williams ––– General Manager Manawatu Golf Club News March 2016 | Page 1 of 17 PRO SHOP CHANGEOVER UPDATE As previously announced prior to Christmas, from August 1st this year the Club will be incorporating the Pro Shop into Manawatu Golf Club Incorporated. -

Adam Scott Former UNLV Golfer and Current PGA Tour Star
“Coach, you are on a roll for developing such great players AND quality kids." --- Jim Nantz Broadcaster, CBS Sports "The golf program at UNLV played a big part in my golf educa- tion, helping me to prepare for life on Tour. Great facilities to use, great competition to play in and great friends made. I look back at my time at UNLV and have great memories. UNLV is a part of the journey that I am on and taught me so much. I am a proud Rebel!" --- Adam Scott Former UNLV golfer and current PGA Tour star "Coach Knight is an incredible short game instructor and he has a vast knowledge of the game of golf. One of the things he constantly emphasized was the importance of the finishing holes in every tournament. I can't even begin to count how many times his words rang true, with the finishing holes making the differ- ence between winning and losing." --- Ryan Moore Former UNLV star, current PGA Tour golfer and Ryder Cup Champion "If a young golfer has the dream of playing on the PGA Tour, there is no better place to play college golf than UNLV. Dwaine Knight will help you learn what it takes to be successful at the next level." --- Hank Haney Leading golf instructor "I couldn't be where I am today without the program at UNLV and Coach Knight. Coach worked with me from the start and helped me with my short game and I saw immediate improvements. I still almost exclusively work with Coach on my short game. -
