BGOV BIOGRAPHY

By Carter Dougherty, Bloomberg News Randy Hultgren holds a seat with an important legacy -- the last Republican to hold it, J. Dennis “Denny” Hastert, became Speaker of the House in January 1999 and went on to become the longest-serving Republican speaker in U.S. history. Hultgren got an early start in politics. He worked for Hastert from 1988-90 before going attending -Kent College of Law of the Institute of Technology. He graduated in 1993 and was elected to the DuPage County Board the following year. He served in the state House and Senate before winning a seat in Congress in the Republican landslide of 2010, and now represents a swath of Illinois that stretches west from the Chicago exurbs before turning southwest to end near the banks of the Mississippi River. In the primary he defeated Hastert’s son, Ethan, by 10 percentage points. He unseated Democratic incumbent by 6 percentage points in November. In April 2011, Hultgren introduced a bill that would deny salaries to members of Congress until they pass all of the annual appropriations bills. Salaries would be held in escrow after Oct. 1, the start of the fiscal year, until all the measures pass. “Outside of Washington, getting paid only when you do your job would sound like common sense; unfortunately, that’s not the case here,” Hultgren told The Beacon-News of Aurora, Illinois. Hultgren resides in Winfield, Illinois, with his wife, Christy. They have four children, Karsten, Kylie, Kade and Koleson. Caterpillar Inc., the multinational maker of construction, mining and agricultural equipment, was a top five contributor to Hultgren, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The firm’s Aurora, Illinois, plant is in Hultgren’s district and the Joliet, Illinois, plant is nearby. “He shares the pro-business, pro-trade record of Denny Hastert,” said Bill Lane, a Washington-based lobbyist for Caterpillar
