The victory gave Indiana its fifth men’s soccer championship, its second consecutive. Indiana defeated Santa Clara, 1-0, in front of a crowd of 15,439. Yuri Lavrinenko scored the game-winning goal. With 16 minutes left in the first half, Lavrinenko capitalized on a quick counter attack by the Hoosiers on the left side of the field. Lavrinenko drib- bled the ball close to 35 yards before passing the ball to Aleksey Korol at the top of the penalty box. Korol blocked a Santa Clara defender and fed the ball back to a waiting Lavrinenko. The Indiana senior placed the ball inside the far post past Bronco goalkeeper Rusty Johnson. All-Tournament Team: Lavrinenko was honored with the tournament’s most outstanding offen- sive player award, while teammate Nick Garcia took home most outstanding defensive honors. Joining Lavrinenko and Garcia from the Hoosiers on the all-tournament squad were Ryan Mack and Aleksey Korol. Santa Clara had three team members named to the all-tournament team: Adam Indiana’s Yuri Lavrinenko, the tournament’s Eyre, Ari Rodopoulos and Shawn Percell. Rounding out the team were Connecticut’s Darin Lewis most outstanding offensive player, posted the and Brent Rahim along with Sasha Victorine and Pete Vagenas from UCLA’s contingent. game’s only goal to give the Hoosiers the title.
