Job Title: Medical Statistician/Epidemiologist Team: Aetiological Epidemiology Responsible to: Professor A J Swerdlow
Background: The Aetiological Epidemiology Team at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) comprises about 20 staff members and works on studies of the causes of cancer in human populations. Staff of the Team include epidemiologists, statisticians, nurses, data managers, secretarial and clerical staff. They work on a range of topics in cancer epidemiology, on studies in the UK and international collaborative projects. We have a vacancy for a full or part-time (not less than 28 hours a week) medical statistician, or an epidemiologist with strong analytical skills, to work on national studies of the causes of breast cancer, which have collected questionnaire data and blood samples from across the UK. The work will be as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Objective of the post: The post involves work on data collection and maintenance of data quality, preparing and analysing data, and taking part in writing-up and publishing results from epidemiological research studies in collaboration with more experienced statisticians/epidemiologists.
Responsibilities/Duties: The postholder will work on:-
Data management and coordination of data collection, and maintaining the high quality of collected data. Validation and analysis of data from the research studies. Statistical analyses. Liaison with other internal staff, external collaborators and other relevant institutions, where appropriate. Involvement with preparation of papers and reports for publication. Ad hoc advice to colleagues within the Team. Any other duties that may be required which are consistent with the nature and grade of the post.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Job Title: Medical Statistician/Epidemiologist
Education/Knowledge:
Essential MSc or other higher degree in Statistics or Epidemiology, or a related analytical discipline Knowledge of statistical methods in medical research
Desirable Knowledge of analytical methods for epidemiology
Skills:
Essential Good working knowledge of methods and software for data preparation and statistical analysis General computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheet and database packages) The ability to work systematically and carefully
Experience:
Desirable Work experience in statistics, computing, or data analysis in medical research Experience of using the statistical packages STATA or SAS GENERAL

EPRA/ EPRF(Epidemiology Research Assistant/ Fellow) pay scale: The ICR has an agreement stating that the maximum length of employment for staff on an EPRA/ EPRF grade should be no more than 7 years post-MSc employment within the Institute and no more than 10 years total post MSc employment (at the Institute and elsewhere). Consequently candidates should be aware that they should have no more than 10 years post-MSc experience by the end of the contract on offer. INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH
APPOINTMENT DETAILS
Appointment to the post will be on a Fixed Term Contract to 31st December 2018 in the first instance. The starting date will be as soon as practical, by mutual arrangement. Appointment will be to the EPRA/ EPRF (Epidemiology Research Assistant/ Fellow) pay scale with starting salary of between £30,410 p.a. and £36,072 p.a. inclusive, dependent upon relevant skills and experience.
This is a full time post based on 35 hours per week net, Monday to Friday. A part-time appointment (not less than 28 hours a week) would also be considered for an appropriate applicant.
The annual leave entitlement is 30 days per annum (pro rata if part time). In addition, there is entitlement to 11 days Public and Privilege Holidays (pro rata if part time).
The post is based at the ICR site at Sutton, Surrey. The site has free car parking facilities for ICR permit holders, applications require approval, and a staff restaurant. There are also on-site sports and social facilities, including a modern gymnasium. Crèche facilities are also available, although access depends on availability.
