Utah Jazz To Celebrate Martin Luther King’s Legacy Activities Include Afternoon Workshop and Clinic Prior to Jan. 21 Game SALT LAKE CITY (January 17, 2019) – The Utah Jazz will participate in numerous activities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 21, to celebrate and honor Dr. King’s lasting contributions and legacy. The festivities include a workshop and basketball clinic at Vivint Smart Home Arena for 60 youth from Calvary Baptist Church and Salt Lake County Youth Government in partnership with the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Commission and the Salt Lake County Office of Diversity & Inclusion. The workshop, which begins at noon on Jan. 21, will focus on Dr. King’s six principles of nonviolence outlined in his first book, Stride Toward Freedom. The youth will participate in a discussion and design a button depicting Dr. King’s tenets of social change and justice. Following the workshop, the youth will participate in a basketball clinic, run by Jazz Youth, that features specialized instruction on the court at the home of the Utah Jazz. The participants will return for the Utah Jazz vs. Portland Trail Blazers game that evening, where the Jazz will celebrate Dr. King with numerous in-game activations. Victory Brinker, a six-year-old vocalist from Pittsburgh, will sing the National Anthem and a Jazz player will address the crowd prior to the game. The Jazz will also join players across the NBA in wearing special MLK shooting shirts. In addition, Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment, in conjunction with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), will present the Larry H. Miller Youth Scholarship at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day memorial luncheon, which will be held at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City on Jan. 21 beginning at noon. A high school senior will be presented with a $3,000 college scholarship and an engraved silver bowl from Utah Jazz broadcaster Alema Harrington and Jeanetta Williams, the president of the NAACP Salt Lake Branch. Funding for the college scholarship is provided by Larry H. Miller Charities, which focuses its contributions on nonprofit organizations and programs that benefit youth and women in areas of health and education. The presentation by Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment and Larry H. Miller Charities continues a tradition set in motion by Larry H. Miller more than 20 years ago. —@JazzDoingGood or utahjazz.com— About the Utah Jazz Founded as the 18th member of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1974, and located in Salt Lake City since 1979, the Utah Jazz are committed to excellence as a team and in the community.
