APPENDIX 117 RAJ BHAVAN Kohima-797001 December 03,2016 Message I value the efforts of the State Government in bringing out documentation on Nagaland Vision Document 2030. The Vision is a destination in the future and the ability to translate the Vision through Mission, is what matters. With Vision you can plan but with Mission you can implement. You need conviction to translate the steps needed to achieve the Vision. Almost every state or country has a Vision to propel the economy forward. We have seen and felt what it is like to have a big Vision and many in the developing world have been inspired to develop a Vision for their countries and have planned the way forward for their countries to progress. We have to be a vibrant tourist destination with good accommodation and other proper facilities to showcase our beautiful land and cultural richness. We need reformation in our education system, power and energy, roads and communications, etc. Our five Universities have to have dialogue with Trade & Commerce and introduce academic courses to create wealth out of Natural Resources with empowered skill education.

Jamir, T. 2018. Lest We Forget: An Estimate of Vikuosa Nienu’s Ancient Asia Contribution to the Archaeology of Northeast India. Ancient Asia, 9: 4, pp. 1–13, DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/aa.147 RESEARCH PAPER Lest We Forget: An Estimate of Vikuosa Nienu’s Contribution to the Archaeology of Northeast India Tiatoshi Jamir The present paper is the outcome of a small documentary research that the author undertook since the year 2009 on the early life and academic foundation of an archaeologist – Vikuosa Nienu, wherein his contribution to the archaeology of the region seem like an unfamiliar one to the majority of us from Northeast India. But the value of his work stands out for two reasons – firstly, prior to this research, no archaeological investigations had ever been conducted in Nagaland beyond mere archaeological recon- naissance. It was a time when political situations in Nagaland were tense, and field archaeology at that time was considered problematic and challenging. Secondly, this pioneering work is laudable because of its theoretical underpinnings of three dominant paradigms – culture-historical, processual and behavioural archaeology where Nienu gained exposure as a student at the University of California, Berkeley and at the Grasshopper Pueblo Field School during the early 1970s. The paper thus, examines Nienu’s formative years at the School of Archaeology, New Delhi, and thereafter his field experiences, academic environ- ment and the major paradigms that shaped his understanding of the region’s prehistory in the course of his later research. Introduction Efforts were made to find Nienu’s work through the The author got to read the work of Vikuosa Nienu’s for internet, looking for any traces of his past works and came the first time by sheer chance at a book fair during one across his PhD thesis titled The Prehistoric Archaeology of the Naga Horbill Festival.

For OHicial use only CENSUS OF INDIA 1971 SERIES 15 NAGALAND PART VIU-A ADMINISTRATION REPORT ENUMERATION DANIEL KENT of the Indian Frontier Administrative Service DIRECTOR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS NAGALAND (Motif on the cover) Kohima witnessed the disasters of modern battle during the Second World War. The .epitaph standing in the world-famous War Cemetery at Kohima town, " When you go home TeJ/ them of us and say For your tomorrow We gave our to-day" reminds the mankind about the few brave men who sacrificed their lives for the bettermen' of the future generations of the world. PREFACE The most distinguishing feature of the 1971 Census in Nagaland is that the people came forward with enthusiasm to co-operate without any reservation in their minds for enumeration in this gigantic Census Operation, unlike the 1961 Census as it was conducted under very peculiar circumstances in view of the distrubed condition in the State. The tradition of Census Operation is a kind of national stock taking, and are indispensable instrument of policy in development planning, and tne Administration Report herein attempts to present a factual account mainly with the organisational structure of Census Operation. The reports contained herein is intended to give a humble guide line to various plannings in the State, because no such planning can be achieved mainly on random imagination without basing on scientific data as done in the past. For this purpose the second volume known as Administration Report on Tabulation shall be published shortly, and as such it deals only with the first phase of the Census Operation relating to houselisting and enumeration.
