In addition to a high number of en- demic charopids, the land snail fauna also includes the only athoracophorid slug and highest rhytidid species diversity found on the western side of the Great Dividing Range. Mount Kaputar is the eroded remains of a continental shield volcano complex which formed between 21 and 17 million years ago. General continental-scale drying and coastward con- traction of mesic ecosystems between 15 and 2 mil- lion years ago as the Australian continent moved north resulted in the isolation of the Mount Kaputar area as a western outpost of the mesic eastern high- lands surrounded by the predominantly xeric eco- systems of the modern western slopes and plains. Sampling and experiments carried out both in the laboratory and at four sites within Sydney, Australia revealed that both H. purpurascens and P. eximius were more abundant on kelp than other algal species, and that the gastropod was more abundant on kelp with, rather than without, the urchin. When the presence/absence of H. purpurascens on kelp plants was manipulated experimentally in the field, P. eximius recolonised kelp plants at higher rates when sea urchins were present. Urchins, by contrast, did not differentially respond to kelp with and without the gastropod, indicating that the association be- tween the kelp and urchin is maintained by a unidi- rectional facilitation cascade. In addition, P. eximius on plants inhabited by H. purpurascens were larger than those on plants without the urchin. Fig. 1.     Aquatic Botany 78 (2004) 3–14 Limited effects of grazer exclusion on the epiphytes of Posidonia sinuosa in South Australia Dominic Keuskamp∗ School of Biological Sciences, Flinders University of South Australia, GPO Box 2100, Adelaide SA 5001, Australia Received 8 August 2002; received in revised form 10 July 2003; accepted 22 August 2003 Abstract The role of grazing in regulating the abundance and biomass of epiphytes of the seagrass Posidonia sinuosa Cambridge et Kuo was investigated at an oligotrophic site in lower Spencer Gulf, South Australia. Prosobranch gastropods >7 mm in size were excluded from 0.25 m2 plots of seagrass for 3 months with four steel mesh cages, compared with four partial cages used to control for cage artefacts, and also four uncaged control plots. Abundances of epiphytic algae, invertebrates and epiphytic mass (DW, AFDW and calcium carbonate) were recorded regularly. The indirect effect of grazer exclusion on seagrass leaf mortality (necrosis) was also measured. Grazing effects on the epiphytic assemblage were detected despite some cage artefacts. Filamentous algal abundance and epiphytic biomass (AFDW) increased in response to grazer exclusion. Caging per se reduced crustose coralline algal cover and calcium carbonate during the experimental period but, after 3 months, no artefact or treatment effect was discernible. Abundances of invertebrate taxa were little affected by grazer exclusion although caging per se reduced the density of spirorbid polychaetes. Grazer exclusion did not affect seagrass necrosis. In comparison with similar studies and given the duration of exclusion, the sum of treatment effects on epiphytes and seagrass was small. Rather, the role of epiphyte grazing in this nutrient-poor area appears to be limited to the maintenance of an epiphytic assemblage that is free of filamentous algae and dominated by crustose corallines.

It supplies water in an area from Oberon, north to Portland, Mount Piper Power Station and beyond, and east, across the Great Dividing Range, to Wallerawang town, Wallerawang Power Station, Lithgow and the Upper Blue Mountains. It is the source of water for many small to medium communities, including Rydal, Lidsdale, Cullen Bullen, Glen Davis and Marrangaroo, as well as many rural properties through which its pipelines pass. It was established by Act of Parliament in 1945 as a Trading Undertaking of the NSW State Government. The FRWS had its origins as a result of the chronic water supply problems of the towns of Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland and Oberon from as early as 1937, which were exacerbated by the 1940-43 drought.

Abstract: This paper has been written against the backdrop of John B. Hawkins’ paper, A Suggested History of Tasmanian Aboriginal Kangaroo Skin or Sinew, Human Bone, Shell, Feather, Apple Seed & Wombat Necklaces, published in Australiana, November 2008, and the research it sparked. Hawkins proffered some contentious propositions concerning unlikely and speculative connections between Tasmanian Aboriginal shell necklace making and the making of so-called “Tasmanian Appleseed necklaces”. Within the acknowledgements section of his paper Hawkins said that he “[looked] forward to a response to [his] article by the museum authorities, for it is only by the cut and thrust of debate that knowledge can be further enhanced”. This paper takes up that challenge albeit from outside the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and totally independent of any institutional sponsorship. Introduction Cultural production is at the nexus of different understandings of place and the cultural realities that belong there. It turns out that necklace making in Tasmania has a resonance of a kind that might not be easily found elsewhere because of the complex relationships it exemplifies between settler, and Indigenous trajectories. The wintertime (May–October) precipitation across south-eastern Australia, and the Snowy Mountains, was studied for 22 years (1995–2016) to explore the sensitivity of the relationships between six established climate indices and the precipitation to the orography, both regionally and locally in high-elevation areas. The high-elevation (above 1100 m) precipitation records were provided by an independent network of rain gauges maintained by Snowy Hydro Ltd. These observations were compared with the Australian Water Availability Project (AWAP) precipitation analysis, a commonly used gridded nationwide product. As the AWAP analysis does not incorporate any high-elevation sites, it is unable to capture local orographic precipitation processes. The analysis demonstrates that the alpine precipitation over the Snowy Mountains responds differently to the indices than the AWAP precipitation. In particular, the alpine precipitation is found to be most sensitive to the position of the subtropical ridge and less sensitive to a number of other climate indices tested.

This ship explored the shelf from end to end, but, unfortunately, through the tragic ending of the enterprise, the results are comparatively unknown.

For most people, acquaintance with mollusks began with empty shells. These shells often delight the eye with a variety of shapes and colors. Conchology studies the mollusk shells and this science dates back to the 17th century. However, modern science - malacology is the study of mollusks as whole organisms. Today more and more people are interacting with ocean - divers, snorkelers, beach goers - all of them often find in the seas not empty shells, but live mollusks - living shells, whose appearance is significantly different from museum specimens. This book serves as a tool for identifying such animals. The book covers the region from the Red Sea to Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam.     Nearshore Marine Biodiversity of the Sunshine Coast, South-East Queensland: Inventory of molluscs, corals and fishes July 2010 Photo courtesy Ian Banks Baseline Survey Report to the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association, September 2010 Lyndon DeVantier, David Williamson and Richard Willan Executive Summary Nearshore reef-associated fauna were surveyed at 14 sites at seven locations on the Sunshine Coast in July 2010. The sites were located offshore from Noosa in the north to Caloundra in the south. The species composition and abundance of corals and fishes and ecological condition of the sites were recorded using standard methods of rapid ecological assessment. A comprehensive list of molluscs was compiled from personal observations, the published literature, verifiable unpublished reports, and photographs. Photographic records of other conspicuous macro-fauna, including turtles, sponges, echinoderms and crustaceans, were also made anecdotally. The results of the survey are briefly summarized below. 1. Totals of 105 species of reef-building corals, 222 species of fish and 835 species of molluscs were compiled. Thirty-nine genera of soft corals, sea fans, anemones and corallimorpharians were also recorded. An additional 17 reef- building coral species have been reported from the Sunshine Coast in previous publications and one additional species was identified from a photo collection. 2. Of the 835 mollusc species listed, 710 species could be assigned specific names. Some of those not assigned specific status are new to science, not yet formally described. 3. Almost 10 % (81 species) of the molluscan fauna are considered endemic to the broader bioregion, their known distribution ranges restricted to the temperate/tropical overlap section of the eastern Australian coast (Central Eastern Shelf Transition).
