Ceremony at Potters Hill Labyrinth

On Monday morning, March 16th, a group of us, including Noeline Vaughan (wife of Richard), walked up Potter’s Hill to the labyrinth. There, Aunty Kris Schaffer, Tasmanian Aboriginal Elder, performed a moving ceremony of Welcome to Country and a traditional Smoke ceremony. Aunty Kris has a deep knowledge of botany as well as edible plants and conducts educational programs in Care for Country. She emphasized the link between our labyrinth here at South Arm and two others located along the Aboriginal Songlines. Windsong labyrinth is located up on the East Coast, and Windgrove is on the . Also attending were Richie and Dave, two of the Council team, who worked on sensitively rebuilding the labyrinth for us, assisted by local Sheila Hale and Virginia Vianna (Richard’s daughter) The result of their craftsmanship is magnificent and deeply respectful of the first iteration by artistically including all of the original stones carried up there by locals. Thank you to all involved in the labyrinth for creating a beautiful and spiritual place in an already spectacular location! PS We hope to entice Kris back to our community to further share her culture and knowledge. — Kerry Scambler

3 No Sign of Tee off at Arm End

The proposed Arm End golf course was first approved by Clarence City Council in April 2013 but the proponent has not started the development after more than 7 years. The pipeline was approved in April 2019 but it also has not started. Over the last year the proponent has repeatedly announced the imminent commencement of the golf course and pipeline only to have the deadlines pass with no work occurring. The reason for this is that a long list of permit conditions are yet to be delivered on by the proponent. In the May 2019 edition of the South Arm News, the proponent said the pipeline would start in 3-4 months, meaning August or September 2019. Nothing happened. In on 3 August 2019 they said a start would occur at the site (meaning Arm End) in 3-4 months but November came and went and no construction occurred. In the Oct-Nov 2019 edition of the South Arm News they said construction would start in 3-4 months, meaning December 2019 to January 2020. They have put up what they claim is a site office but no golf course construction has occurred. In a 14 February 2020 Mercury article the proponent said pipeline works would start in 5 weeks. This deadline has now been abandoned, with the proponent erecting a sign at Arm End saying the pipeline construction may take place in April or May or after 15 November to avoid the handfish breeding & spawning season. On 21 April 2020 we received a letter from Ross Lovell, Manager of Planning at Clarence City Council clarifying that in relation to the golf course only one permit condition had been satisfied, the production of weed management plan, and the following conditions had not been addressed: Engineering designs required by condition 10; Erosion and Sediment Control Plan required by condition 11; Landscape plan required by condition 16; Environmental Management Program required by condition 20. Similarly with the pipeline, we received a letter from Council on 2 April 2020 stating that a long list of documents are yet to be submitted to Council for approval. Both letters are on the RITE website. Please stay posted - www.rite.org.au - for our scheduled launch of our low impact vision in June, time dependent on COVID-19 restrictions. RITE has a low impact development vision for Arm End Reserve. This has been developed with the community and envisages sight sensitive rehabilitation with facilities such as toilets, picnic shelters, seating and viewing areas. — Robyn McNicol, Coordinator, RITE | www.rite.org.au

4 Arm End Update

Lifeline for Tasmanians Arm End has set out an area of around 3.6ha exclusively for a Bird Sanctuary within the Public Recreation Reserve after 1800 98 44 34 consultation with Birds . Dr Eric Woehler, the President had been onsite to advise. Early preparation work has started on the public recreation uses such as the walking trails, lookouts, golf course layout, which will occupy some 40ha of the whole 120ha Arm End site. “We have pegged out and rough mown the golf hole areas,” Mr Ferguson said. “Our site masterplanners, leading landscape architects, Mogford + Crafter, are now finalising the detailed site plan landscaping design. We are also continuing the weed management works and maintenance of tracks as much as we can with Arm End shut due to COVID-19.” Mr Ferguson said Arm End hopes to commence the recycled water pipeline project in late November this year. “We are really excited about the environmental and economic benefits of bringing high quality irrigation water to the Peninsula.” - A.Mark Thomas, Director, M&M Communications

The Arm End and South Arm Pipeline projects are progressing very well. A project of this significance, requiring around $10 million to complete, takes time to finalise fully. The water solution took some four years work through the approvals phase. • The Arm End Public Recreation Reserve and Public Golf Course is on track to be completed and opened in 2022. • Arm End has mowed the layout for the public golf course. • We have erected a site office and adjoining sheds to continue the weed eradication and rehabilitation programs. Retirement Village Life During the Pandemic

During the coronavirus pandemic, when we are asked to stay home, and social contact with family and friends is minimal, we are thankful for our situation here at Roches Beach Living (RBL) in Lauderdale. Residents are trying hard to keep up their fitness. The beach is a popular destination for walks, where, from a distance in these COVID-19 days, you can see people of all ages, and dogs – it helps to feel that you are actually still part of society. A variety of shops and services are within walking distance of the Village and most have remained open. RBL Residents are well known at Harmony Nursery and receive very good service. We are thankful that care and support workers are still able to come to the Village for Residents with ‘care packages’. Dogs and cats are good companions Trucks, Security, for some of us. forklifts and The Residents’ Committee is helping the community more pull together, maintain social interests and look out for each other with newsletters and technology. Residents are easily able to keep the necessary distance apart because of the spaciousness within the Village. — Wendy Fenton, former resident of South Arm

12 Cremorne Sculpture Trail Competition Idle hands are creativities plaything, with time and stuff you find on the beach, on the floor in the shed - imagination becomes the only limit. The Cremorne sculpture trail was created to encourage residents to embrace the downshift necessitated by Covid, the results have transformed the village and provided joy to participants and spectators alike. Birds flock around Wisteria Lane, sea creatures appear in places no sea creature has been before. Surfboards, bodyboards, bottle tops, shells, toothpicks and paint were reimagined, reused and upcycled in a spontaneous show of creativity, imagination and resourcefulness. And as for Beverly, nowadays everyone who enters Cremorne wonders where she’s been and what tales she might tell…some say she might be a key to a long forgotten loch that in a more cautious time all ships had to pass before making landfall.
