Dear Parents,

The Cathedral School of St. Jude is working to ensure that the school is safe, and the faculty and staff are ready to re-open our school on Monday, August 10th. We have developed a comprehensive plan that addresses the safety and well-being of our children, faculty and staff during this time of Covid-19. Our plan is a living document, which means it will be changing throughout the remainder of the summer and into the school year, as more research, recommendations and information is published.

While Covid-19 has upended much of our lives, it has reinforced the value and importance of Catholic . We will continue to build communities of trust, friendship and respect in each of our classroom spaces, while using recommendations for social distancing. Our mission remains stronger than ever before during these challenging times.

Mission Statement

“The Cathedral School of St. Jude fosters a Catholic environment that nurtures and challenges individuals to realize their highest spiritual, academic, physical and emotional potential.”

We know that having the children here at school is the best way to fulfill our mission, but we believe it is important for each of our families to have a choice in the education of their children. It is important that every family focus on what is best for their family, as every family is different. We want all our families to feel safe in their choice for school this fall. We will be providing a synchronous distance learning option for our families, as well as learning in our classrooms. After the beginning of the school year, parents may opt into the Distance Learning program with 48 hours’ notice to Administration. We will provide Zoom videos of live in class teaching, as well as assignments posted to the RenWeb system. The Distance learning work load will be nearly identical to the in class assignments given.

The pages that follow will explain how we will re-open the Cathedral School of St. Jude and the plans for in school learning and distance learning. Again, our goal is to open the 2020-2021 school year and remain open for the duration of the year. However, as the pandemic is ever changing, we want to make sure you know we are prepared to handle each learning scenario.

God Bless,

Mr. Jesse Gaudette

Principal

Plan Overview

The Administration, Faculty and Staff of the Cathedral School of St. Jude are committed to welcoming students and families back to a faith-filled and safe school community. Below you will find guidelines that will be implemented at the Cathedral School of St. Jude for the 2020-2021 school year. Please note that this is a living document which will be revised according to guidelines issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the State of Florida, the Florida Department of Education and other health agencies in consultation with the Office of Catholic and Centers.

Masks/Face Coverings At this we are requiring Masks are worn for faculty, staff and K-8 students and recommend masks or face coverings for Early Education students. Currently, the Cathedral School, the Parent Association and the Office of Catholic Schools and Centers are working to provide Masks to our students, faculty and staff for the opening day of school. It is our intent to provide each family with 2-4 Masks or Coverings for use. The school will also maintain extra masks in each learning space in case a mask is soiled or misplaced. Families are asked to maintain the Masks/Coverings and keep them clean and ready for school use. Although we understand wearing masks is the best protection against Covid-19, re recognize how challenging wearing them all day may be for some students, faculty and staff. Therefore, we will work to provide times throughout the day where students may remove their mask in a safe and acceptable manner while practicing social distancing (i.e. Outdoor PE class).

Phased Re-Opening of School The Cathedral School of St. Jude will re-open using a gradual phased approach. Each plan has incrementally more contact between classes, the student body, and the school community. The plans are in place to ensure the safest possible school environment, as well as to limit any potential school-wide exposure. Modest increases in contact allow measured levels of exposure to ensure the greatest safety to all. Alterations in ‘Plans’ (or graduation to the next phase) will be determined by the School’s Covid-19 Action Team (comprised of Admin, Teachers, Advisory School Board Members and Parents) using local data, recommendations from the CDC, Florida Health Department and the Office of Catholic Schools and Centers. Each plan allows for distance learning to take place at the family’s discretion.

Responsibilities of Parents and Guardians We all have a part to play in keeping our students, their families, and our faculty and staff safe. Parents/ Guardians have the enormous responsibility of ensuring students are not sent to school sick and for following isolation and quarantine recommendations if somebody in the family is exposed to or infected with Covid -19. • Students MUST NOT be sent to school if they have exhibited any symptoms of illness (fever, coughing, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal issues, vomiting, etc.) within the past 24 hours. • Parents/guardians should help their children understand the current need for social distancing and the wearing of masks when social distancing can’t be maintained. It is suggested that you practice with your children, so they have a better idea of how to properly wear a mask and what 6 feet looks like. • If a student develops a fever or other significant symptoms of illness once at school, the student will be sent to the clinic to await pick-up. A parent/guardian MUST pick up the student within 30 minutes of being called. Parents should make sure they have back-ups designated in case they are not able to make it to school for pick up within 30 minutes. • Families are expected to follow the latest CDC guidelines regarding isolation, social distancing, etc. if exposed to or infected with Covid-19. The school should be notified if a student or somebody in his/her immediate family tests positive for Covid-19. • Parents/guardians should make sure all emergency contact information is up to date in the FACTS/ Ren Web system. • We recognize that some of our students have chronic conditions, such as asthma or allergies that will pro- duce a cough. Parents/guardians of these students should provide the school with documentation from the child’s doctor regarding these conditions.

• If a family elects to remain home for Distance Learning the Parent/Guardians are expected to assist with the Distance Learning curriculum to be sure the student remains current with their studies.

Distance Learning for Individual Students Currently, The Cathedral School intends to reopen on August 10th. However, as mentioned above in the Letter from the Principal, it is understood that families have varying levels of comfort regarding sending their children back to school due to the pandemic. This is especially the case for those with students or family members who are medically vulnerable. A Distance Learning option will be offered as long as the Diocese of St. Petersburg and St. Jude deem it appropriate to do so. The purpose of Distance Learning is to provide a viable educational option for families not comfortable with In- School learning at this time. The goal remains, for all students to return to In-School learning with the Covid-19 pandemic has been resolved. While the details of Distance Learning have not yet been finalized, we expect to offer an asynchronous model of Distance education. This means the student learning at home will follow the in-school schedule and attend recorded or live class sessions to keep up on the work being given at home. While Distance Learning in March- May of this year allowed for a reduced workload; this current model for 2020-2021 will maintain a nearly identical workload for students (as in school learning). The overall goal will be to offer a full curriculum to students even if they are Distance Learning. Families that elect to begin the year (or transition to) Distance Learning are encouraged to engage students in the school curriculum. This will allow for a smoother transition for students in and out of the learning options.

Distance Learning—Whole School Currently, St. Jude intends to reopen on August 10th. If, at some point, we are directed to close the school for any period, Distance Learning will be implemented for the entire school. • When the school previously closed and had to implement a Distance Learning plan, it was considered a time of crisis and only the minimum amount of lessons were delivered. If the school must close again and implement a Distance Learning plan, the amount of schoolwork will be more in line with a normal school day. Parents should be prepared for this scenario. • During the first few weeks of school, students and parents will be trained on the learning management system and apps that will be used for Distance Learning. • It is imperative that parents/guardians help to ensure lessons are being completed and turned in during any periods of required Distance Learning. • Teachers will also receive training during their first week of school regarding systems and apps to be used and expectations for delivery of lessons. • No tuition discount can be offered for Distance Learning.

Catholic Identity Our Catholic faith is of utmost importance to our school community. It is important for us to maintain daily prayer opportunities and weekly Mass experiences with our students. • Morning Show – teachers and students will begin each day with prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, and morning news/announcements
