I would also like to acknowledge my former administrative colleagues from Battle Creek Central High School: Bernard Brown, Coby Fletcher, and Anita Harvey for giving me an opportunity to become an assistant principal, for allowing me to be on the best high school administrative team in the state of Michigan, and for being great friends too! And while I was at Battle Creek Central, I met and worked alongside three very supportive gentlemen: Sgt. Mike Nunnally, Greg Williams, and Nate Willis. They kept me motivated to stay the course and to finish my doctorate despite the 240-mile roundtrip drive to Wayne State from Battle Creek to complete my coursework. At this time, I would like to acknowledge the two people who believed in me the most and motivated me in my early 20s to pursue a doctorate at a time when I was considering leaving the education profession all together: Coach James Reynolds, Jr. and the late Dr. Don G. Lessner. Coach Reynolds inspired me to have a strong passion for educating urban youth, and he reminded me that the moral purpose of an educator is to become rich, not financially, but rich by investing into the futures of young people so that their futures can be positive. Coach Reynolds iv also taught me that the name of the urban education game is to do right by kids; if it isn’t right by kids then you should not do it, period! I would also like to thank Coach Reynolds for giving me the professional and moral purpose to become an urban educator who truly cares about doing what is in the best interests of kids. Dr. Lessner inspired me over the Memorial Day holiday in 2007 to remain in the education profession and to strive to make a difference for kids who are being marginalized by the educational system in urban areas. Dr. Don also advised me that I should open a sports- themed boarding school for at-risk males living in poverty in metro Detroit. The purpose of this boarding school would be to provide the structure, discipline, and support needed for our males to be successful later in life. The end goal of the boarding school would be preventing these at- risk males from becoming negative educational statistics and the possible inclusion into the school-to-prison pipeline.     1 WINTER 2018 Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society! At the Detroit Historical Society, 2017 has been a time of transformation. Three years of work on Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward came to fruition this year, and the efforts that went into it led us to adopt a new model for engaging the public in creating programming and exhibitions in our museums. Our work is stronger for it, as evidenced by positive reviews, awards and steady increases in visitor numbers driven by the Detroit 67: Perspectives exhibition. Most importantly, however, our organization changed from the inside out. Our model for engagement, Engage, Refect, Act (ERA), incorporates a three-step process for commencing work on new programs and exhibitions at our museums: engage the community, refect on what we learn and inspire visitors to action based on the relevance of history to today. We are committed to applying this model internally and externally as we work to tell Detroit’s stories and why they matter. That means that we are engaging the talents of our staff across departments to strengthen and streamline our work in the same way that we are engaging the public and other cultural institutions to inform upcoming programs and exhibits. In October, the Detroit Historical Society and our partners at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History were honored with the Michigan Museum Association’s 2017 Peninsulas Prize in recognition of our unique collaboration on the Detroit 67 project. This was wonderful evidence of the transformational power of the ERA model.

Detroit Public Schools is a majority-minority district with the highest concentration of minorities of any city of 100,000 residents according to the 2010 US Census. 1994 In 1994, residents approved a $1.5 billion dollar capital bond program for Detroit Public Schools, which they will be paying for until at least 2033. The original bond was to be used to repair and renovate school buildings to service a then stable student enrollment of 167,000 students. The control of the spending of the bond dollars was a hotly contested issue, where various parties tried to take planning and spending authority from the school board.

Ron Boland, a counselor in Detroit's Finney High School, has co-authored an extensive proposal to provide peer mediation programs to all Detroit public schools in order to resolve conflicts between student and reduce violence. Also sponsoring the proposal are Sharon Miller, Director ofthe Neighborhood Reconciliation Center and Dr. Brantley Johnson. In the program, young people would be trained to receive mediation training and assigned to help students resolve conflicts. Mediators do not judge who is right or who is wrong or settle conflicts, but help people involved work out a settlement acceptable to both sides. Because "peer pressure" often reinforces aggressiveness, and makes children and teenagers see violence as necessary to gain "respect" or recognition of manhood, as feel they will be considered weak if they "back down," observers believe that having their fellow students involved in dispute resolution programs will increase their effectiveness . IN 1993, Boland stated, Western International High School within Southwest Detroit started training teachers, counselors, community leaders, and administrators in mediation (including the principal, Gloria Clark- Arnold, who encouraged the program.) They later arranged a 16 hour training program for 18 selected student candidates, Boland said. "As a lead trainer in those sessions," Boland stated, "I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the participants and the manner in which they absorbed the information presented, as well as the skills demonstrated .

Features of the program were instructional and direct noninstructional services, such as social work services, counseling and psychological services, tutoring by student assistants with teacher supervision, and parent participation in instructional and noninstructional activities. This report presents findings from the second year evaluation in Area A of the Detroit schools. Six principals completed a survey, and 83% believed that the program boosted student achievement. Teachers (n=58) generally thought (77%) that the program raised student achievement. Seven ninth grade administrators who responded also generally thought that the program raised achievement. Teachers and both groups of administrators identified areas in which improvements could be made and recommended its continuation. Recommendations included: the fostering of a school-within-a-school environment; continuing block scheduling; continuing to create clusters of students; and continuing to sensitize teachers to the special needs of ninth graders.
