On the 20th of August 2015, a video survey was carried out at Scalpay. The survey consists of 3 transects, which have been labelled T1, T2 & T3. T1 is approximately 728mtrs long and runs in a North to South direction. T2 is approximately 370mtrs long and runs in an East to West direction, crossing over the Northern half of T1. T3 is approximately 323mtrs long and runs in a general East to West direction, crossing over the Southern half of T1. Due to the length of transects two intermediate points were created, Inter 1 & Inter 2. Inter 1 is at the crossover point of T1 & T2, while Inter 2 is at the crossover point of T1 & T3. The intermediate points were used as starting positions for the ROV to dive from, this allowed the survey to be carried out with less umbilical in the water, decreasing the drag on the ROV & reducing the potential for getting caught on any subsea obstructions. The ROV’s position during each dive was logged via a GPS/ USBL tracking system to ensure the accuracy of the data. An Image of transects and exact camera path for each dive can be found below (Figure 1 & 2).

The video footage was then saved to a DVD and played back in order to identify occurring on the seabed. A screen shot was taken of each species identified and a frequency estimate recorded based upon a variant of the Marine Scotland Science ROCA abundance scale, combining aspects of the Marine Nature Conservation Review abundance scale. The abundance classification used is defined below:

X Rare < 5 in 10 minutes

XX Occasional < 25 and >5 in 10 minutes

XXX Common Every few minutes

XXXX Abundant Almost all frames or multiples within some frames

XXXXX Super Abundant All frames and multiples within some or all frames

Occurrence of priority marine features or the components of such were analysed and a summary of their likely quality given. The biotope type and a summary of the species are also provided. Transect 1: (T1 Inter 1 to Start = A) (T1 Inter 1 to Inter 2 = B) ( T1 Inter 2 to End = C)

Description

The sediment type present in the footage is comprised of muddy sand with large areas of boulders and cobbles. This leads to a portion of the footage to be classified as SS.Smu.CfiMu; Circalittoral fine mud, supported by the presence of several characterising species, which however all occur in relatively stable and comparatively low levels. The biotope type does not however cross into SS.SMU.CfiMu.SpnMeg as there is insufficient coverage of seapens. SS.SMu.CfiMu.MegMax is a possibility, but there is no concrete evidence of the presence of Maxmuelleria lankesteri. Regardless due to the mixed nature of the habitat and the lack of abundance of any key species this biotope would be assessed as poor or inconclusive for anything more than circalittoral fine mud. In regards to the areas of boulders and cobbles, the biotope resembled here would be SS. SCS. CCS; Circalittoral coarse sediment.

This cross over of sediment types; habitats in the circalittoral zone of cobbles embedded in or sitting on mud or sandy mud, show high diversity. Where a biotope like this occurs a variety of communities can develop, including , burrowing megafauna and hydroid species, all which can cause patchiness bearing resemblance to the above discussed classifications. In conclusion, the Scalpay seabed shows an average example of SS.SMx.CMX; Circalittoral mixed sediment.

Conclusion

The biotope SS. SMx.CMX; Circalittoral mixed sediment is not of significant importance; it is not a highly individual habitat or faunal type and is not listed as a Priority Marine Feature. Sub-biotope types are of low quality when classified individually; as such it is felt that the overall biotope is a standard example, with no special points of note. Scalpay, Isle of Skye

Basic Diagram of Survey Area

The survey consists of 3 transects, which we have labelled T1, T2 & T3. T1 is approximately 728mtrs long & runs in a general North – South direction. T2 is approximately 370mtrs long & runs in a general East – West direction, crossing over the Northern half of T1. T3 is approximately 323mtrs long & also runs in a general East – West direction, crossing over the Southern half of T1. Due to the length of transects we created two intermediate points, Inter 1 & Inter 2. Inter 1 is at the crossover point of T1 & T2, while Inter 2 is at the crossover point of T1 & T3. We used the intermediate points as starting positions for the ROV to dive from, this allowed us to carry out the survey with less umbilical in the water, decreasing the drag on the ROV & reducing the potential for getting caught on any subsea obstructions. The ROV’ s position during each dive was logged via a GPS/ USBL tracking system to ensure the accuracy of the data. Images of the tracking logs for each dive can be found below.
