This track is taken from Danny Garcia’s Vicious documentary, “Sad Vacation – the Last Days of Sid & Nancy”. JL. shared a night with a young man from New Jersey who showed up by bus with his guitar in a brown shopping In my opinion, his notoriety far surpasses his ability. Here’s a chance for you to decide for yourself. PC. bag; that young man was Bruce Springsteen, and he was signed to his lifelong Columbia Records deal at Max’s. Aerosmith, who were part of the NY Dolls/ Wayne County crew also were signed at Max’s, as were Cheap Trick a bit later on. Due to a lack of space, many worthy max's bands didn't make it onto this record/cd. Here's a partial list: NY’s ‘girls’, Patti Smith, Debbie Harry and Cherry Vanilla all played Max’s, as did Television, The Fast, Talking The Blessed, Student Teachers, The Most, Spicy Bits, The Poppees, The Sorrows, Another Pretty Heads, and any other name to emerge from the scene that you could think of; The Ramones played Max’s as Face, The Ramones, Reagan Youth, Heart Attack, Just Water, Day Old Bread, The Planets, Mink well, although they downplayed that fact a few years later. Mickey Ruskin had to close Max’s in 1974, and while DeVille, Blondie, Emmy (Madonna), Stray Cats, The Stimulators, Bad Brains, Sic F*cks, Nihilistics, it was closed, Hilly’s On The Bowery became CBGB, quickly trying to fill the gap left by Max’s closure. In 1975, Neon Leon, Somebody Good, The Martian Rock Band, The Speedies, Avis Davis, Magic Tramps, The Laura and Tommy Dean bought the bankrupt Max’s and hired Peter Crowley to book the bands, steer the ship Dictators, Pure Hell, The Rousers, Testors, Luigi & The Wiseguys, The Waldos, Velvet Underground, and get the joint hopping again, while managing Wayne County, whose new band, The Backstreet Boys, became The Stooges, The Wailers, Bruce Springsteen, The Rattlers, The Idols, Stumblebunny, Dead Boys, regular attractions at Max’s, alongside Cherry Vanilla, The Fast, Suicide, and ex NY Doll Johnny Thunders’ new Red Transister, The Marbles, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Levi & The Rockats, The Victims, Ronnie band The Heartbreakers, the greatest rock and roll band to emerge from the 1970’s NYC scene ... period. & The Jitters, Jones Crusher, Hammerbrain, Stop, New York Junk, Fellini's Basement, Little Annie, Bikini Contest, and many more. Look 'em up. Many have records or CDs available. While JoHansen and Sylvain kept The Dolls name alive, Johnny Thunders had a very active post Dolls career; besides the punk era Heartbreakers, and Cosa Nostra, he joined forces with MC5 original Wayne Kramer to form Gang War: Thunders had so many band names By 1981, various problems brought Max’s to an end, but its 16-year run set the stage for all that followed. Many over a period of time that it became hard to keep track, and this may have blunted potential feel that if Max’s hadn’t come into being when it did, many of the trends, bands and attitudes that we now share, record deals from happening; too many name changes too frequently was not seen as a positive thing by most record label employees. Thunders loved his 1960's cover versions, and this version of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For may have never come to pass.

    Christian Ricci Behind the Scenes in New York – Fall 2020 Assignment #1 October 05, 2020 Opened in 1973 on Bowery in Manhattan’s East Village, CBGB was a bar and music venue which features prominently in the history of American punk rock, New Wave and Hardcore music genres. The club’s owner, Hilly Kristal, was always involved with music and musicians, having worked as a manager at the legendary jazz club Village Vanguard booking acts like Miles Davis. When CBGB first opened its doors in the early seventies the venue featured mostly country, blue grass, and blues acts (thus CBGB) before transitioning over to punk rock acts later in the decade. Many well know performers of the punk rock era received their start and earliest exposure at the club, including the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Blondie, and Joan Jett. During the New Wave era, performers like Elvis Costello, Talking Heads and even early performances from the Police graced the stage in the now legendary venue. Located at 315 Bowery, which is situated near the northern section of Bowery before it splits into 3rd and 4th Avenues at Cooper square, the original building on the site was constructed in 1878 and was used as a tenement house for 10 families with a shop (liquor store) on the ground floor. In 1934, 315 and 313 were combined into one building and the façade was redesigned and constructed in the Art Deco style, as documented in the 1940 tax photo. At that time, the building was occupied by the Palace Hotel with a ground floor saloon.

Some people are at odds with the world and they become serial killers, and others become artists. –Jayne County From February 4 – March 11, 2018, PARTICIPANT INC is honored to present Jayne County, Paranoia Paradise, the first retrospective exhibition of County’s visual artwork, curated by Michael Fox. Although County’s artistic output began in experimental theater in the late 1960s-early ‘70s, including work with Theater of the Ridiculous and in Andy Warhol’s Pork, she is perhaps most well-known as a rock singer and performer. This exhibition takes its title from one of County’s songs, Paranoia Paradise, which she famously performed as the character of “Lounge Lizard” in Derek Jarman’s 1978 film, Jubilee. Selections of her earliest known paintings and works on paper made in the early ‘80s while living in Berlin will be exhibited alongside works made up until the present, with approximately eighty pieces on view from County’s studio as well as several private collections. A presentation of related ephemeral materials from County’s archive, as well as photographs by Bob Gruen, Leee Black Childers, and Michael Fox will accompany the exhibition and further illuminate her legendary contributions to music, film, performance, as well her role as forebear and gender pioneer as the first openly transgender rock performer.

By Michael Angelo Tata So when the doorbell rang the night before, it was Liza in a hat pulled down so nobody would recognize her, and she said to Halston, “Give me every drug you’ve got.” So he gave her a bottle of coke, a few sticks of marijuana, a Valium, four Quaaludes, and they were all wrapped in a tiny box, and then a little figure in a white hat came up on the stoop and kissed Halston, and it was Marty Scorsese, he’d been hiding around the corner, and then he and Liza went off to have their affair on all the drugs ( Diaries , Tuesday, January 3, 1978). Privileged Intake Of all the creatures who populate and punctuate Warhol’s worlds—drag queens, hustlers, movie stars, First Wives—the drug user and abuser retains a particular access to glamour. Existing along a continuum ranging from the occasional substance dilettante to the hard-core, raging junkie, the consumer of drugs preoccupies Warhol throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their actions and habits fascinate him, his screens become the sacred place where their rituals are projected and packaged.     Long, Tall Stacia - The Six-Foot Lady with the Two-Way Sex Life Penthouse 1974 What makes Hawkwind concerts rather different from those offered by the current crop of rock bands is the fact that they possess a 42-28-39 asset called Stacia. At the magic moment when the music really starts getting under your skin, Stacia makes her entrance - dancing, miming and generally interpreting the sounds in her own, very unique fashion; usually wearing little but greasepaint. With the above-mentioned statistics and standing six feet tall, Stacia is an impressive lady: as she so rightly says, "If I could get my waist down to 18 I'd have the same shape as Sabrina." Though she is now an indispensable member of Hawkwind, her onstage gyrations started very informally. "I saw the band in Exeter," she recalls, "and got invited to a rehearsal. Then I went with them to a concert in Redruth. We were all bombed out of our heads and I asked if I could dance onstage. So we found some greasepaint, I made up and on I went." Stacia joined Hawkwind full time in 1971 but she insists that she has had no formal dance training. "I was kicked out of ballet school when I was 10 because I was too tall. Besides, if you enjoy expressing yourself, training schools can ruin whatever talent you may have." Her dancing used to be "strictly acid freak stuff" but now Stacia - no surname forthcoming, incidentally- is making it her business to establish a rapport with her audience.
