From Father Zywan What’s in a name? Upon the announcement of the name for the new Parish formed from the soon to be former Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis parishes, Bishop Zubik placed our community under the patronage of Saint Aiden. This is the name that was initially submitted in the first round of name choices by parishioners and accordingly this is the name that was voted upon in the second round of name choices by parishioners. The name Aiden translated from the early medieval Gaelic name Áedán can properly be, and is, spelled several different ways including: Aaden Aayden A’Den Aden Adon Aedan Aedon Aedonne Aidan Aiddan Aidden Aidean Aidon Aiyden Ao dhan +Aodhann (Gaelic spellings) Aydan Aydann Aydden Ayden Aydenn Aydenne Aydon Aydonn Eyden. The most common Anglicized versions are Aiden with an “e” and Aidan with an “a”. The explanation of these differences, with several spelling options, was presented to Bishop Zubik when the petition for the new name of the parish was submitted. The spelling of Saint Aiden (as submitted and voted upon by the parishioners) with an “e” was selected. Since that time, the Bishop’s office has received a number of requests to amend the spelling to Saint Aidan with an “a”. Bishop Zubik has graciously agreed to revise the decree so that moving forward, Saint Aiden with an “e” will become Saint Aidan with an “a”. Just to be clear, Saint Aidan's (with an "a") Cathedral (Irish: Ardeaglais Naomh Aodháin) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ferns, County Wexford, in . The saint, and our new patron, to whom the cathedral is dedicated is Máedóc of Ferns (feast day 31 January), also known as Áedan, Aidan, or Aiden, who died in 626, and should not be confused with St. Aidan of (feast day 31 August), an Irish missionary who died in 651. The amended decree will soon be issued reflecting this change that some have asked for. Let us begin to pray to Saint Aidan, for ongoing peace and singular focus on Christ to which he dedicated his life to God’s glory and the evangelization of His people. God’s peace and blessings to all.

A Glorious Day! The entire Church of Pittsburgh looks forward to this ordination of three young men to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ in service to the people of this diocese. They are: Deacon Jeff Craig, Deacon Matthew Hawkins and Deacon Michael Faix. Deacon Jeff Craig is a son of Saint Alphonsus Parish where he received his sacraments, attended and graduated from the parish school. His parents, Glenn and Laurie Craig, remain members of the parish family. We will remember them with gratitude as well. The Ordinations are scheduled for Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. In light of the COVID-19, attendance at this Mass will be regrettably limited to by invitation only. Details as to how his Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Alphonsus the following day have not yet been determined due to the same restrictions necessary for the current policies for social distancing. More information regarding Deacon Craig’s first Mass will be announced as they become available. One thing that COVID-19 cannot limit is our ability to saturate he and his classmates with prayer. Please keep these three men in your prayers. So many parishioners have already played a role in fostering his vocation. Praise God! We look forward to these glorious days and in giving thanks to God for the good works that He continues to begin and bring to fruition for the good of all.

Welcoming Our New Shepherd Father David Bonnar has been appointed as the founding pastor of the new parish of Saint Aidan. He is currently serving at Saint Bernard Parish in Mount Lebanon and Our Lady of Grace Parish in Scott Township, soon to be the singular parish of Saint Michael the Archangel. “Father Dave”, as he prefers to be called, has been out to visit both churches and facilities of the Wexford Catholic Community and is very excited to make his home amongst you. The actual date of transition for he and I, is July 1. In the meantime, please remember Father Dave in your prayers in this process of his transition to leaving behind a community that has been his home for 12 years and now coming another great community where God is sending him. If you would, kindly remember me in your prayers in going through a similar journey. May he be praised in all that we do! In Jesus’ love,

Fr. Zywan

Well, we have a lot of amazing things going on here at the Catholic Community of Wexford. We have a tremendous community here. And we want to make sure it’s as easy as possible for every one of you to be involved and connected to it all.

So, we’ve adopted a new way of communicating that will make it much simpler for you to get the information you want from us! It’s powered by a service called Flocknote. Like sending a "note" to your "flock".

This is all totally free for you to use, you don’t even have to download anything or create a password in order to participate. You just take a couple minutes to sign up and it lets you receive email or text messages from the groups and ministries that you choose. It even allows you to reply directly back to those messages so we can get feedback and hear from you in an efficient manner.

Your info is kept totally private and, again, it lets you choose precisely which groups and ministries you want to get email and text messages from here at the Catholic Community of Wexford.

In addition to regular group and ministry communication, we’ll also use this to send you important updates about special events coming up, inclement weather announcements, etc.

And it’s important for you to know that you can update your communication preferences or unsubscribe from any of these updates at any time!

“Text the word Wexford to 84576”

Once you send that in, Flocknote will text you back a confirmation message AND another message with a link you’ll need to click to complete the process.

We hope you will find this method easy to use and find this as another effective means of communication.

Thank you!
