Of particular interest are those relating to sex; whether it’s the kinks of a congressman, the intimacies of an idol, or the extramarital affair of a neighbor, people love the nitty-gritty and no one is safe from the dissemination of these exceedingly private details. This includes the distribution of intimate photos and videos taken with or without the consent of the individual depicted. Not all states have laws specifically targeting the distribution of these depictions known as nonconsensual pornography, or colloquially as “revenge porn.”1 At this time, forty-six states and the District of Columbia have laws targeting perpetrators or revenge porn, with laws in South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Wyoming currently pending.2 All states but Mississippi have some sort of revenge porn law, criminal or otherwise, for those affected.3 However, many of these laws are flawed, leaving victims with an illusion of protection when in fact they are vulnerable and exposed.4 With changes in the political climate and a push towards true protection of those victimized, the United States should, as a whole, criminalize revenge porn at the federal level. Revenge Porn in Everyday Life, Pop Culture, and Politics * Cecilia Grimaldi is a J.D. student at University of California, Hastings College of the Law who will be graduating in May 2021. Michelen, supra note 2. 110 HASTINGS COMM/ENT L.J. 43:1 The Cyber Civil Rights Initiative is a nonprofit organization that serves thousands of victims of nonconsensual pornography.5 It defines revenge porn as “the distribution of sexually graphic images of individuals without their consent.”6 This includes images either consensually obtained within the context of an intimate or trusted relationship, or originally obtained without the consent of the depicted individual through things like hidden cameras, phone hacking, or the recording of a sexual assault.7 This breach of trust and violent invasion of privacy, often by vengeful ex-partners or opportunistic hackers, “transforms unwilling individuals into sexual entertainment for strangers” by allowing the world to view the victim in the most intimate and personal lights imaginable.8 Terrifyingly, these images and videos can almost immediately “dominate the first several pages of ‘hits’ on the victim’s name in a search engine, as well as [be] emailed or otherwise exhibited to the victim’s family, employers, co-workers, and peers.”9 This cyber sexual assault can cause “‘public degradation, social isolation, and professional humiliation for the victims,’” creating a “‘lasting digital stain. that is nearly impossible to fully erase.’”10 These effects can be devastating, especially because many people engage in victim blaming and question why someone would put themselves in such a compromising position in the first place.11 Needless to say, revenge porn can destroy relationships, ruin careers, and irreparably damage the psyche of the victim. The modern world’s salacious interest in sexuality and the ever-present camera glued to the palm of every hand has made revenge porn increasingly common. This coupled with the accessibility of social media and other internet platforms has made the destruction of another’s life as easy as clicking a button. Every day there are new instances of revenge porn.12 In Texas, a 19-year-old woman was blackmailed into having sex with three fifteen-year-olds after a former partner threatened to release an explicit video 5. Not long ago, it changed the course of Paris Hilton’s career, and created Kim Kardashian’s. It made headlines when a hacker accessed the iCloud accounts of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and other celebrities, spreading their nude photos throughout the world in what some call “Celebgate”19; it aggravated an intensely acrimonious split and custody battle between Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna after he posted sexually charged images of her on his Instagram20; and it forced Bella Thorne to release her own nude pictures before a hacker could first in an attempt to regain control of her life.21 Clearly, revenge porn has a large role in celebrity smear campaigns. However, pop culture celebrities are not the only public figures who have been affected by this devastating practice. • Secret Digital Image Sharing Using Natural Image Based VSS Scheme
International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN (Online): 2319-7064 Index Copernicus Value (2013): 6.14 | Impact Factor (2013): 4.438 Secret Digital Image Sharing Using Natural Image Based VSS Scheme Pinky .V M. Tech Student, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering Mount Zion College of Engineering, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India Abstract: Visual cryptography is a technique of sharing secret images. This technique encrypts a secret image into number of shares. Combining these shares generates the original image and it can be directly recognized by the human visual system. Visual Secret Sharing scheme is a method of distributing and sharing the secret image amongst a set of users. In conventional visual secret sharing scheme, the shares May holding the security parameters for protecting the secret image but it will leads to suffering the problem of transmission risk. This is the main problem in conventional VSS scheme. To solve this problem here introduce a new scheme of secret digital image sharing via natural image based VSS scheme. In this proposed scheme the shares are encrypted by using the strong AES encryption technique after that this encrypted share is embedded into the natural image. For recovering the original image, it is necessary to decrypt the encrypted share. This method not only reduces the transmission risk problem but also enhance the security of the secret image. Keywords: Visual Cryptography, Visual Secret Sharing Scheme, Transmission Risk Problem, Natural Image based VSS scheme, Encryption/Decryption technique. 1. Introduction photographs. In the proposed scheme diverse media is used for sharing digital images. Using a variety of media for In communication system security of secret image is very sharing the secret image increases the difficulty of altering important.

February 26, 2020 Chairman David Skaggs Co-Chairwoman Allison Hayward Office of Congressional Ethics 425 3rd Street, SW Suite 1110 Washington, DC 20024 Dear Chairman Skaggs and Co-Chairwoman Hayward: We write to request that the Office of Congressional Ethics (“OCE”) investigate whether Representative Devin Nunes is receiving free legal services in violation of the Rules of the House of Representatives (“House rules”). Specifically, Representative Nunes retained an attorney who represents him in several defamation lawsuits in various courts where he seeks a total of nearly $1 billion in damages. House rules prohibit a Member from receiving free legal services, unless the Member establishes a Legal Expense Fund (“LEF”). According to the House Legislative Resource Center, Representative Nunes has not filed any of the required reports to establish an LEF. The relevant facts detailed below establish that the OCE Board should authorize an investigation of Representative Nunes. Representative Nunes’s overt involvement with the highly-publicized lawsuits threatens to establish a precedent that the Legal Expense Fund (“LEF”) regulations no longer apply to Members. Although Representative Nunes is entitled to legal representation and he may pursue any legal action to protect and defend his interests, he must comply with House rules. An OCE investigation will preserve Representative Nunes’s legal right to counsel while upholding well-established House rules and precedent. House Rules Prohibit Members from Receiving Discounted or Free Legal Services A Member of the House of Representatives “may not knowingly accept a gift” with limited exceptions.1 A “gift” is defined to include “a gratuity, favor, discount, entertainment, hospitality, loan, forbearance, or other item having monetary value.

Image-Based Abuse, Non-Consensual Pornography, Revenge Porn: A Study of Criminalization and Crime Prevention in Australia and England & Wales Majid Yar1 University of Hull, United Kingdom Jacqueline Drew2 Griffith Criminology Institute, Australia Abstract Distribution of nude, intimate and sexualized images of individuals without consent and against the wishes of those individuals whose image has been captured, is of growing concern across the world. Moving from the conceptualization of ‘revenge porn’ in the early 2000’s, through to our more sophisticated understanding of the issues of “image-based abuse” and “non-consensual pornography” this paper considers the broad context of these crimes. The paper draws on the concepts of online misogyny, gender-based victimization, and “toxic masculinity”. The progress towards criminalization of such online abuse, with reference to the recent introduction of new laws in England & Wales and Australia is examined. This shift from voluntary to statutory regulation, and from civil to criminal law remedies has been coupled with new crime prevention and control initiatives that seek to encourage reporting leading to prosecution and educate users and empower victims.

  • From Disney to Disaster: the Disney Corporation’S Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks
From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

  • America Through Street Photography
From the Instructor Sarah wrote this piece for my section of the Genre and Audience WR X cluster. Students had undertaken semester-long research projects and, in the final assignment for the course, were asked to reimagine their academic arguments for a public audience. Deciding to write in the style of The New Republic, which is, in the publication’s own words, “tailored for smart, curi- ous, socially aware readers.” Sarah’s focus on street photography brings her research on classic American images to a non-expert audience with diverse professional and disciplinary perspectives, appealing to their interests in history and the arts while tapping into contemporary culture. — Gwen Kordonowy WR 150: The American Road 135 From the Writer When I enrolled in an experimental writing class entitled “The American Road,” I assumed that the semester would be filled with discussions about the physical American road, its attractions, and its place in American history. While the physical road was an important subject in the class, I learned that this “American Road” was expansive beyond its physical limi- tations, able to encompass topics as broad and abstract as social progress, popular television shows, and, in my case, photography. I ultimately chose to investigate the works of two American street photographers, Robert Frank and Lee Friedlander, whose approaches to photography reveal much about life in America and what it means to be an American. While both photographers frequently feature the road in their pictures, I chose to focus more on the people and culture found alongside it and how they represent America.
