Vespina meridiana Hirowatari & Yagi sp. nov. from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and Vespina sichuana Hirowatari, Huang & Wang sp. nov. from Sichuan, China, are described. The previously known Vespina species are associated with plants from the Fagaceae family on the western coast of the USA and East Asia and with Sapindaceae (Aceraceae) in eastern Europe. -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Otto Moog 1, Erhard Christian 2*, and Rudolf Eis3 1Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Gregor Mendel 33 Str., 1180 Vienna, Austria 2 Institute of Zoology, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Gregor Mendel 33 Str., 1180 Vienna, Austria 3Waldegg 9a, 2754 Waldegg, Austria Abstract: Between 2015 and 2019, the list of Lepidoptera from “cave” habitats (i.e., proper caves, rock shelters and artificial subterranean structures) in Austria grew from 17 to 62 species, although the effort of data collection remained nearly constant from the late 1970s onwards. The newly recorded moths and butterflies were resting in caves during daytime in the the warm season, three species were also overwintering there. We observed Catocala elocata at 28 cave inspections, followed by Mormo maura (18), Catocala nupta (7), Peribatodes rhomboidaria, and Euplagia quadripunctaria (6). More than half of the species have been repeatedly observed in caves in Austria or abroad, so their relationship with such sites is apparently not completely random. Since the increase of records in Austria coincided with a considerable rise in the annual number of hot days (maximum temperatures ≥30°C) from 2015 onwards, we interpret the growing inclination of certain Lepidoptera towards daytime sheltering in caves as a behavioral reaction to climate warming. E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author Abstract Nemophora acaciae sp. nov. is described from Kenya on the basis of a large series bred from flowers of Acacia seyal and A. lahai. The new species differs from all Afrotropical Nemophora species by its dark brown forewing fascia with white medial stripe near the costal margin of forewing. The key to the Afrotropical Nemophora species is provided. Key words: Acacia lahai, Acacia seyal, Afrotropical region, biology, flowers, new species Introduction Adelidae are small archaic (monotrysian) moths, whose males, with the exception of the genus Cauchas Zeller, 1839 have conspicuous long antennae. The family includes nearly 300 species worldwide (van Nieukerken et al. 2011), about 90 of which were described from the Afrotropical region (De Prins & De Prins 2015). The majority of Afrotropical species of Adelidae belongs to the genus Ceromitia Zeller, 1852 (subfamily Nematopogoninae), while metallic-coloured day-flying adelids (subfamily Adelinae) include 2−4 species of the genus Adela Latreille, 1796 (taxonomic positions of two species remain uncertain) and 7 species of the genus Nemophora Hoffmannsegg, 1798. -

This artide reviews the association between lycaenid larvae and ants, and de scribes structure and function of the lycaenid larval an t-organs involved in myrmecophily. På verdensplan består familien sandsynligvis af mere end 6000 arter, og udgør 40% af de kendte dag sommerfuglearter. Lycaenidae kan opdeles i fem underfamilier: Lycaeninae, Poritiinae, Miletinae, Curetinae og Riodininae. Der har været megen diskussion om, hvorvidt rioninerne skal have familiestatus (Rio dinidae); da problemet endnu ikke er endelig afklaret, har jeg valgt at anbringe grup pen som en underfamilie inden for Lycaenidae. Myrmecofili Myrmecofili er betegnelsen for andre organismers afhængighed af myrer. Myrers inte resse for og opvartning af lycaenidelarver har været kendt gennem mere end l 00 år. Ifølge Pierce ( 1985) kendtes livshistorien dengang hos 833 arter afLycaenidae, og heraf vides der at være tæt kontakt mellem larver og myrer for 245 arters vedkommende. Dette ansås af Pierce for at være et minimum, da kontakten mellem myrer og larver kun med sikkerhed kan konstateres i naturen. -

Franssen TREFWOORDEN Beekdal, faunistiek, lichtvangst, simultaantelling Entomologische Berichten 76 (4): 131-145 In het weekend van 1, 2 en 3 juli 2011 is door leden van de secties Snellen en Ter Haar van de NEV samen met de Stichting Koekeloere een vlinderexcursie gehouden in het Nationaal Park De Meinweg (Limburg). Op de eerste avond hebben de deelnemers hun lichtvang- installaties in een rij geplaatst in het beekdal van de Boschbeek, aan de noordrand van het gebied. De vegetatie verandert gaande van de bron stroomafwaarts en het doel was om te zien of dit ook correleert met een veranderende nachtvlinderfauna. De resultaten laten zien dat de soortensamenstelling tussen locaties sterk verschilt, zelfs voor locaties die dicht bij elkaar liggen. Ook op locaties met een vergelijkbare begroeiing is de faunistische overeenkomst opvallend klein. Een duidelijk verschil in soortensamenstelling tussen beneden- en bovenstroomse delen van het gebied is niet gevonden. Wel is duidelijk geworden dat De Meinweg een rijke en gevarieerde nachtvlinderfauna herbergt. In dit artikel wordt een aantal zeldzame en nieuwe soorten voor het gebied gemeld. Inleiding van dit type simultaantelling het voorkomen van soorten te Er is veel bekend over de vlinders van Nationaal Park De Mein- relateren aan patronen en structuren in de vegetatie.
