Ok, some may be squeamish at eating poor Stuffed! _________________ defenceless rice but, hey ho, it was delicious If something's worth doing, it's worth over-doing Page 3 Post subject: Bored with Butties phase 2 (reposted) Posted: Sat Dec 25, 2010 2:14 pm This took a little more forethought but was well worth the effort! Although I‟m sure I left the beak on one of the squids A large family of decapod crustaceans Some offally appetising „meat‟ ¡Voila! Some former marine cephalopods ¡Delicioso! _________________ Some vegetables, dragged squealing to their deaths If something's worth doing, it's worth over-doing Page 4 Post subject: Bored with Butties phase 3 (reposted) Posted: Sat Dec 25, 2010 2:15 pm Turn away now all vegetarians and those of a nervous disposition! ...prosciutto & linguiça... Bongo cooking This is for those of you who were a little squeamish at the offal in the last two offerings, none in this although I‟m not 100% sure what went into that linguiça Really easy to do, pretty well just bung everything in and leave the flavours to get to know one another. And just for Brian (Bongoplod) you can‟t miss the opportunity of mixing meat & shellfish ...onion, garlic, paprika & piri-piris... Diced pork... ...tomatoes... Flamenco Eggs from Spain, there‟s a similar Mexican version except the first part of that recipe reads “Robar algunos huevos, pimientos, cebolla, tomates y chorizo” (Steal some eggs, peppers, onion, tomatoes and sausage)..... Eggs in, “lid” on and wait for the whites to congeal. (Is congeal the correct culinary term? ) Red onion and chorizo Simples! _________________ Red & yellow peppers If something's worth doing, it's worth over-doing A tin of tomatoes Page 7 Post subject: Bored with Butties phase 5 (reposted) Posted: Sat Dec 25, 2010 2:18 pm Tortilla española, this is very easy and amazingly tasty. I normally just do a plain (potato & egg) Spanish omelette which is great in butties but a little bland on its own. This version adds a few other things to liven it up. Due to only having limited time for my lunch, despite what you lot think, I cheated slightly and cooked the spuds the night before. But if you have time, there's nothing stopping you doing the spuds then setting them to one side while you zap the rest of the ingredients in the same pan. ....add to the eggs & spuds and cook both sides.... Peas, onion, garlic, parsley, cherry tomatoes & chorizo.... ....¡perfectamondo! ....bung them all in a frying pan with a little olive ¡bon appetit! oil.... _________________ If something's worth doing, it's worth over-doing Page 8 Post subject: Bored with Butties phase 6 Posted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:21 pm No chorizo for a change but this is most definitely not for the squeamish The previous five phases have all featured my favourite recipes from Iberia so I suppose it is time to move the other side of the Pyrenees. Today‟s offering is a little adventurous for Bongo-cooking but, just think of the reaction you could get on a campsite in Mablethorpe Phase 6a ....and set aside. Tartiflette A French dish from the Savoy region, it originated in the valley of Aravis, home of Reblochon cheese.

  • Koalas, Kiwis and Kangaroos
http://lexikos.journals.ac.za Koalas, Kiwis and Kangaroos: The Challenges of Creating an Online Australian Cultural Dictionary for Learners of English as an Additional Language Julia Miller, School of Education, The University of Adelaide, Australia ([email protected]) Deny A. Kwary, Department of English Literature, Airlangga University, Indonesia ([email protected]) and Ardian W. Setiawan, The State Polytechnic Manufacture Bangka Belitung, Sungai Liat, Indonesia ([email protected]) Abstract: This article reports on an online cultural dictionary for learners of English as an Addi- tional Language (EAL) in Australia. Potential users studying English for academic purposes in an Australian university pre-entry program informed each stage of the dictionary's creation. Consid- eration was given to the need for such a dictionary; terms to be included; information necessary for each entry (including audio and visual material); use of a limited defining vocabulary; example sentences; notes on each term's usage; and evaluation of user feedback once the dictionary had been launched online. Survey data indicate that users particularly value the dictionary's ease of use, example sentences, and specifically Australian content (including pronunciation given in an Australian accent). It is suggested that more entries be added, and that cultural dictionaries be created for other varieties of English, as well as for other languages. • The Contradictions of Australian Food Culture
Terra Nullius, Culina Nullius: The contradictions of Australian food culture John Newton A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Creative Arts University of Technology Sydney 2014 CERTIFICATE OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP I certify that the work in this thesis has not previously been submitted for a degree nor has it been submitted as part of requirements for a degree except as fully acknowledged within the text. I also certify that the thesis has been written by me. Any help that I have received in my research work and the preparation of the thesis itself has been acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. Signature of Student: Date: 1.11.14 2 Abstract In addressing the contradictions of Australian food culture, this project asks four questions. First and most importantly: how is it that after more than 225 years, we have no Australian or regional Australian food culture, nor even any evidence – through recipes and dishes – of its more tangible and visible vector, cuisine? Secondly: what are the consequences for a nation and its people of having bypassed this important stage in the evolution of a society? Thirdly: why in over 200 years living here do we eat practically nothing that grows locally but those fish, birds, crustaceans and shellfish analogous to European produce? And finally, if we do not have a food culture in the historical sense, what do we have? The second third and fourth questions will be answered during the course of the project. The answer to all these questions will require, firstly, an exploration of the history of European occupation of this land and its occupiers.
