west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

KC had started hanging out at the new T.K. studios–a combination record ware- house and attic recording facility owned by R & B music legend Henry Stone. It was here, in the fullness of time, that he would rendezvous with his destiny–and his new musical collaborator, Rick Finch. “My biggest break was finding this little record company, this little recording studio,” he recalls. “I mean, there was Criteria in Miami, but you had to have money to get into Criteria to record a record. “T.K. was not like Criteria. Criteria was a recording studio where everybody from the Who’s Who list paid big money to record there. T.K. was this private thing. They were making their own records and distributing them.” Steve Alaimo, T.K. Productions’ vice president and head of A&R, years ago reflected on the origins of the south Florida recording industry in a newspaper interview. “Around 1970, Henry Stone and I decided we were going to start a record company in Florida,” Alaimo said. “And we just worked real hard and it worked. For one thing, the weather’s so good down here. L.A., New York... it’s more comfortable here. We built a little studio. We just added on and got bigger.” AT LEAST YOU’RE DOING WHAT YOU LOVE 39 The original name of the group, in fact, was KC And The Sunshine Junkanoo Band, which suggests that the band’s original charter, beyond its affiliations with R & B, tended toward a raucous, Caribbean sensibility. “In a way it was Early Disco, if you want to call it that,” says KC.

  • “My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (Guest Post)*
“My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

  • Mary Wells, the 42Nd and First African American National President, with the Mary W
MAY 2009 ISSUE Dianne S. Lennon (NJ), Past National President, 1995 Geraldine "Gerri" Peeples, Minority Network Committee Chair, 1990-91 NEAFCS now pays tribute to Mary Wells, the 42nd and first African American National President, with the Mary W. Wells Memorial Diversity Award, given annually to recognize outstanding efforts and accomplishments of individuals and/or teams in diversity and pluralism in Extension education programming. Dianne Lennon provided these cherished thoughts of Mary Wells. "In 1992, Mary recruited me to travel with her to Germany to attend the International Federation for Home Economics. Mary was inquisitive about global cultures as she strongly promoted the progress of humanity. Sessions of the Congress enriched us professionally while a visit to a family farm left us amazed upon seeing the cattle housed in a structure attached to the house, thus the German way of life. Our tour guide advised against travelling with too much luggage. Mary kept it simple with one huge piece, a few millimeters smaller than a trunk. That seemed like an okay idea until it was time for us to transport our luggage across the city, then numerous flights of stairs to board the train to Berlin for a post tour. The struggle was tremendous; however, Mary persevered, laughing and tugging. It was necessary to turn back and help her down the final 20-step staircase as we had only 10 minutes to board the train. Mary never discussed her health challenges with cancer which claimed her life at the young age of 60. I learned about them following her death on March 25, 1996.

  • KOOL & the GANG, Jersey City, N.J. in 1964, Ronald Bell and Robert
KOOL & THE GANG, Jersey City, N.J. In 1964, Ronald Bell and Robert “Kool” Bell joined Jersey City neighborhood friends Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown, and Charles Smith to create the Kool & the Gang sound - a unique blend of jazz, soul and funk. Throughout the seventies this blend produced a string of hits including “Jungle Boogie”, “Hollywood Swinging”, “Funky Stuff’ and “Summer Madness”. In 1979 the group penetrated the pop market by incorporating the smooth sounds of vocalist James “JT” Taylor with their infectious formula for making hits. Casey Kasem named Kool & the Gang the band of the eighties noting the bands steady stream of hits during the decade. “Ladies Night”, “Get Down on It” “Joanna” and the theme song to parties worldwide, “Celebration”, solidified Kool & the Gang’s musical legacy. Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations due in part to the groups widely sampled catalogue. Kool & the Gang’s drum beats, bass, guitar and signature horn lines lace the tracks of numerous artists including the Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill, and P. Diddy. Kool & the Gang is the most sampled band in hip-hop by far. Their music is also featured on the soundtracks for Rocky, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Wreck-lt Ralph and countless others. For fifty years, Kool & the Gang has continued to tour the world appearing with artists such as Kid Rock, Dave Matthews Band, Elton John, The Roots and a 50-city tour with Van Halen.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.
