The Perak Development Experience: the Way Forward
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences December 2013, Vol. 3, No. 12 ISSN: 2222-6990 The Perak Development Experience: The Way Forward Azham Md. Ali Department of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of Management and Economics Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris DOI: 10.6007/IJARBSS/v3-i12/437 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.6007/IJARBSS/v3-i12/437 Speech for the Menteri Besar of Perak the Right Honourable Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry bin Abd Kadir to be delivered on the occasion of Pangkor International Development Dialogue (PIDD) 2012 I9-21 November 2012 at Impiana Hotel, Ipoh Perak Darul Ridzuan Brothers and Sisters, Allow me to briefly mention to you some of the more important stuff that we have implemented in the last couple of years before we move on to others areas including the one on “The Way Forward” which I think that you are most interested to hear about. Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas. -

Gas Malaysia Collaborates with Perhilitan to Conserve River Terrapins
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GAS MALAYSIA COLLABORATES WITH PERHILITAN TO CONSERVE RIVER TERRAPINS BOTA KANAN, PERAK, 18 October 2017 – In an effort to protect the critically endangered river terrapins, Gas Malaysia Berhad (“Gas Malaysia”), a member of MMC Group, recently collaborated with Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (“PERHILITAN”) and held a Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) programme at the River Terrapin Conservation Centre in Bota Kanan, Perak. The programme saw participation from Gas Malaysia staff as well as representatives from PERHILITAN. About 30 people were present at the conservation centre to help clean the breeding ponds of the river terrapin. En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap, Chief Executive Officer of Gas Malaysia, presented an egg-hatching incubator to En Fakhrul Hatta Musa, Director General from PERHILITAN, for population recovery efforts. In addition, Gas Malaysia contributed several water pumps and filters for the breeding pond in an effort to boost water clarity and remove suspended solids as well as other sediments. Commenting on the CSR programme, En. Ahmad Hashimi said, “Once found in huge numbers in most rivers and bays, these river terrapins now face an uncertain future. They are now classified as a critically endangered species with its population severely depleted due to many years of exploitation, for its meat and eggs.” The conservation effort by Gas Malaysia is part of its CSR plan for the year 2017. Perak was chosen as the location for implementing the CSR programme due to Gas Malaysia’s involvement in the state. Gas Malaysia has been conducting its business in Perak by distributing natural gas to industrial customers in Kampar, Kamunting, Lumut, Parit Buntar, Tambun, Sitiawan, Tronoh and a few others. -

Petronas University of Technology blends academic training with hands-on experience to produce graduates who will contribute to Malaysia’s industrial development. The design of the campus, akin to a town-planning project, brings together several medium-scale buildings: four-storey blocks for teaching and research, cafes and communal facilities, and a drum-like building containing a library and 3’000-seat multipurpose hall. Soaring crescent-shaped canopies - protection against strong solar radiation and heavy monsoon rains - cover the winding pedestrian routes that connect all the buildings. The exteriors are clad in locally sourced ceramic tiles, the interior cladding is formed by woven silk 3124.MAL panels. 2007 Award Cycle 2007 On Site Review Report 3124.MAL by Hanif Kara University of Technology Petronas Bandar Seri Iskandar, Malaysia Architect Foster + Partners Client Institute of Technology Petronas Design 1998 - 2000 Completed 2004 University of Technology Petronas Bandar Seri Iskander, Malaysia I. Introduction Malaysia’s vision is to become a developed nation by 2020. In support of this ambition, the State has refined its national education policy to enable the private sector to become involved in the development of education. Petronas responded to the government’s invitation to set up a private university that would be a centre of creativity and innovation and a leader in technology education. In the words of the university’s champion, Tan Sri Azinan, it was to be ‘a place to learn and not a place to be taught’. -

The Spatial Configuration of Private Investments by Economic Actors in Perak
The spatial configuration of private investments by economic actors in Perak A consideration of centricity of the regional urban system of Southern Perak (Peninsular Malaysia) Luka Raaijmakers (6314554) Under supervision of dr Leo van Grunsven Faculty of Geosciences Department of Human Geography and Planning Master’s degree in Economic Geography Specialisation in Regional Development & Policy November 2019 Page | 2 Acknowledgements This thesis is part of the joint research project on regional urban dynamics in Southern Perak (Peninsular Malaysia). The project is a collaboration between Utrecht University (The Netherlands) and Think City Sdn Bhd (Malaysia), under supervision of dr Leo van Grunsven and Matt Benson. I would like to thank dr Leo van Grunsven for his advice related to scientific subjects and his efforts to make us feel at home in Malaysia. Also, I would like to thank Matt Benson and Joel Goh and the other colleagues of Think City for the assistance in conducting research in – for me – uncharted territory. I would like to address other words of thanks to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, Institut Darul Ridzuan and all other political bodies that have proven to be valuable as well as economic actors for their honesty and openness with regard to doing business in Malaysia/Perak. Finally, the fun part of writing a master’s thesis in Malaysia, apart from obviously living abroad on a vibrant island, was the part of doing research. This required a little creativity, some resilience and even more perseverance. This could not have been done without the other student members of the research team that took part in the collective effort of unravelling the urban system of Perak by using the knowledge we have gained in our years as academics. -

Malaysia saw its first Covid-19 case on 25th January 2020 with the entrance of 3 tourists via Johor from Singapore and by 17th March 2020, the number of cases had reached above 600 and the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented the very next day. For two months, Malaysia saw close to zero market activities with only essential goods and services allowed as all residents of the country were ordered to stay home.
