WAIKATO ROWING CLUB. We reluctantly report the resignation of our club President, Bjarne Larsen. Bjarne has taken up a job in the Islands and on return is to settle in Taupo. An official club farewell was an opportunity to thank Bjarne for his leadership. We would therefore like to welcome our new president – Ian Paterson. Ian comes from a high level sporting background and we are enjoying the energy and future plans that are his passion.

Welcome to all our new members – masters, club, school, novices, and coaches – we encourage any past rowers or coaches to join up and help in our coaching team for the coming season. Our monthly club meetings provide an absolute business based direction. Financial business and secretarial reports are completed to a truly professional standard. The planning and fundraising for the extension of our erg room and also the increase of facilities for our female athletes in our town and lake sheds is underway.

CLUB PRIZE GIVING. Our annual awards evening was held on April 30th at our town house and proved to be a successful night. We had over 80 members and family attend from our WRC club and master’s rowers, Waikato Regional Performance Centre rowers (WRPC) and representatives of our four schools. We thank our guest speaker, assistant coach to the Chiefs, Tom Coventry and his brother Richard (both ex-Boys High rowers) who provided an insightful presentation. The Waikato philosophy of ‘one inclusive family’ was certainly the mood of the night and we are proud that New Zealand’s top rowers and schools are among our club members.

UNIVERSITY ROWING. Waikato University competed at the NZ University Rowing Champs in April, here at . Waikato club athletes competed well with Logan Roger and Paddy McInnes winning the men's pair. They were then followed by a trifecta in the men's single with Toby Cunliff- Steel from Cambridge Club winning, and Waikato RPC athlete Matt Dunham taking silver, with Matt Glenn bronze. Logan, Paddy, Matt Dunham and Matt Glenn all then teamed up to win the men's quad and four. Finally Matt Dunham and Toby took out the men's double. Well done also to the effort put in by our intermediate and novice rowers whom competed here.

With their domination of the small boat classes and winning everything they entered, the above athletes were put into good stead for selection for the University Worlds team. Logan Roger and Paddy McInnes will race the men’s pair, Toby Cunliffe-Steel and Matt Dunham are racing the lightweight men’s double, Matt Glenn will race the men’s single. The team also contains ex Waikato RPC athlete Julia Trautvetter who is making a comeback after 2 year off with injury. Julia is racing the lightweight women’s single. This team will race in Kazan, Russia in early July. Well done also to Mike Gilbert, who has been appointed as part of the coaching team for these crews. The team has been training alongside all the other NZ rowing teams at Karapiro since being selected and have been showing some good results.
