  • MURRAY HEDGCOCK Murray Hedgcock (Pronounced Hedge-Coe
MURRAY HEDGCOCK Murray Hedgcock (pronounced Hedge-coe) is a day older than Brian Close - whatever that proves – and was born in South Melbourne, whose cricket club has fielded a string of famous players, from Jack Blackham, Warwick Armstrong, Bill Woodfull and Clarrie Grimmett, to Ian Johnson, Lindsay Hassett and Ian Redpath. He grew up in Victorian country towns, worked briefly in a bank on leaving school, and then became a journalist. He came to London in 1953 in hope of seeing Hassett’s team in action, but the cash ran out: he had just twenty-five shillings left when he got a job on the Crystal Palace Advertiser. A bonus was a Press pass to The Oval, which he used as often as possible. Back in Australia, he joined Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited in Adelaide in 1960, was posted to the group’s London bureau in 1966, and was bureau chief from 1976 to early retirement in 1991. He wrote periodically on cricket for the national daily, The Australian, and contributed to cricket publications, including Wisden and The Cricketer. Settling in London on retirement in 1991, he continues to work as a consultant for the Murdoch group. In 1997 he edited a study of P.G.Wodehouse’s love of cricket - Wodehouse at the Wicket – long out of print, but published again this year in paperback. An MCC member for forty years, despite long residence in London, and holding UK as well as Australian nationality, he remains a loyal Australian, and barracks for his native land in every Ashes series.

  • VW 15 Numbered
No 15, July 8th 2020. The Virtual Wisdener The Newsletter of the Wisden Collectors’ Club hope that readers find the two main arcles in this edion of the VW of interest. I was unsure as to whether I or not to take up space with the 1970 Journal but when I started to read through Tony Lewis’s thoughts on the 1970 season it became an easy choice to make. The full journal will feature in the Virtual Wisdener’s to follow but I will admit that one of the main reasons for re-prin1ng it in full was the reminder that although each years’ Wisden can give us a review of the previous year, it can never really detail - nor does it try - the unfolding season. Reading Lewis’s thoughts on the ‘pro’ and ‘an?’ South AfriCan tour fac?ons and despite thinking that I knew that the tour was CanCelled ‘late’ - it was remarkable to learn that the actual tour was CanCelled well into the English season and the replacement ‘Tests’ against a Rest of The World side, were very has?ly arranged. Could suCh a tour be arranged so quiCkly today? August the 1st is s?ll the day for domes?C CriCket to resume, but nothing really has Changed in the past week apart from the Coun?es agreeing to have both the forms of the game played upon the restart. Without boringly going over the ground from the last VW, in a week, they have deCided one thing and now they are going to disCuss the detail.

The relocation temporary storage facility at Jolimont Terrace to the new purpose- was a large undertaking but the Library staff and volunteers have built library at the MCG. This has been an immense undertaking also processed (accessioned, covered, spine labelled and shelved) which required the relocation of the Library’s collection of more than approximately 600 books. 100,000 items in two shifts. The move of the Library collection took place in May, while storage was moved in July. The reopening of the Library to the public also meant that staff and volunteers have assisted with member and public reference However, it is one thing to transport items and it is quite another to enquiries. • Victor Trumper (1877-1915)
VICTOR TRUMPER (1877-1915) 88. THE BELDAM PHOTOGRAVURE This photogravure by George Beldam was published by the Swan Electric Engraving Company in 1905 but is based on a photograph taken at The Oval during the 1902 tour. It is surely the ultimate iconic image in cricket, rivaling even the face and beard of WG Grace. This is a fine example, printed on thick art paper with generous margins (image size 38cm x 30cm), framed and glazed in a period vintage frame and signed clearly by Trumper. The photogravure process was the pinnacle of techniques for fine art reproduction of a photograph. £1400 31 1 VICTOR TRUMPER’S LAST BAT Victor Trumper is arguably the most magical name in the history of Australian cricket. Even Bradman does not attract the awe and reverence reserved for the man who Archie MacLaren described in these words: “Myself, I was considered out of a good stable. They talked of my grand manner. Well, compared to Victor, I was an honest selling plater in the company of a Derby thoroughbred.” This Ashes year of 2015 sees not only a new breed of dashing Australian batsmen visit our cricket fields but also marks the hundredth anniversary since Trumper died at the heartrendingly early age of 37. Why was Trumper idolized so much at the time and why is he still remembered with such affection to this day? His batting, of course, was the core but it was not the weight of runs or size of his average that instilled such passions. Without being too trite, it was simply “the way he played the game”.
