The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, March 30, 2021 * The Boston Globe At Fenway this year, players will abandon the suite life and get back in the clubhouse Alex Speier Anxiety engulfed the Red Sox in the wake of reliever Matt Barnes’s recent positive COVID-19 test, a reminder of the vulnerability within the shared space of a clubhouse during a pandemic. Ultimately, the unease proved temporary, as Barnes tested negative several times over the next 48 hours, resulting in his clearance (along with eight other players who’d been isolated as a result of contact tracing) to return to the team. Yet it served as a reminder of what baseball teams may confront in the year to come — and that the Red Sox have a very different clubhouse setup to contain the spread of the virus this year. A year ago, Red Sox players had the most luxurious accommodations in the history of Fenway Park. With a need to implement social distancing and other safety protocols, the Red Sox abandoned their clubhouse and got creative, relocating players and coaches to luxury suites. The suites, which housed two players each, proved effective in keeping the players safe, healthy, and comfortable. When players reported for the summer training period in July, they were dazzled by the setup. But the suites came with a drawback. Player interactions dwindled. Familiar rituals such as conversations over meals were lost. For coaches and front office staff, the dispersal made it difficult to locate players and thus to coach and help them. By contrast, on road trips, the team was together in visiting clubhouses large enough to maintain social distancing.

The same, wide smile that endeared him to teammates, coaches and fans across two continents was more obvious. “This is for my growth and experience,” Otsuka said Tuesday. “This is my challenge, to become a major league coach. And I want to help the players. Everybody helped me a lot when I was a player, so now I want to give back.” Otsuka, who pitched for the Padres from 2004-05, has returned to the organization with an unprecedented title: Triple-A El Paso’s bullpen coach. The job, created over the winter, brought the gregarious right-hander back to San Diego’s spring-training site over the weekend.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 3, Apr. 17, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: With the 2008-09 hoops season now in the record books, the collegiate spotlight is focusing more closely on the nation’s baseball diamonds. Though we’re heading into the final month of the season, there are still plenty of twists and turns ahead on the road to Omaha and the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The NCAA will soon be announcing details of next month’s tournament selection announcements naming the regional host sites (May 24) and the 64-team tournament field (May 25). To date, four different teams have claimed the top spot in the NCBWA’s national Division I polls --- Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina. Several other teams have graced the No. 1 position in other national polls. The NCAA’s mid-April RPI listing has Cal State Fullerton leading the 301-team pack, with 19 teams sporting 25-win records through games of April 12. For the record, New Mexico State tops the wins list with a 30-6 mark. As the conference races heat up from coast to coast, the NCBWA will begin the process for naming its All- America teams and the Divk Howser Trophy (see below). We will have a form going out to conference offices and Division I independents in coming days. Last year’s NCBWA-selected team included 56 outstanding baseball athletes, and we want to have the names of all deserving players on the table for consideration for this year’s awards.

  • Honors Night Wednesday, the Third of June
ORANGE COAST COLLEGE SIXTY-SECOND HONORS NIGHT WEDNESDAY, THE THIRD OF JUNE TWO THOUSAND TWENTY SIX O’CLOCK IN THE EVENING THE SPIRIT OF OCC “There is no education like adversity” -Benjamin Disraeli There is little doubt that 2020 will find itself explored, examined and studied in future history books. At OCC, this year will surely be remembered for its adversity -- it is the year we suffered the tragic loss of a legendary baseball coach, and the year we were driven away from our beloved campus by an unprecedented global pandemic due to the spread of COVID-19, a novel coronavirus. However, it is also the year we saw our campus community come together and demonstrate the commitment to our students and community which define our College - this is the Spirit of OCC. Tonight, as we honor our best and brightest students for their hard work and dedication, we also celebrate the undefeatable spirit that makes our College so special.
