INTRODUCTION

A recent research project on the cosmopolitan spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias Linnaeus) necessitated an extensive literature review in order to elucidate those areas in which information was meagre or lacking entirely. This bibliography is the result of that effort.

The 1013 references presented primarily cover the 20th century English literature to date (1900-1976), and are listed alphabetically and numbered. A subject index is provided which covers 20 different aspects of spiny dogfish biology, research, management, and utilization. Earlier references can be obtained from Bigelow and Schroeder (1948).

In collecting this material, most papers were examined at first hand for applicability. However, others have been included if their titles or abstracts indicated the Latin name or the common names of , piked dogfish, or spiny dogfish. Papers only indicating the word "dogfish" were not included as this term covers at least 3 separate genera. Squalus suckleyi, ~ sucklii, and Acanthias vulgaris were taken as synonyms of Squalus acanthias (ibid) and papers relating to these names were included. Papers dealing with other species designations such Squalus lebruni, h fernandinus, h brevirostrls, h megalops, h cubensis, and ~ blainvillii were also included as there appears to be no clear distinction between these species and Sgualus acanthias (Jones and Geen, in press - Ref. No.464). However, such papers are noted in the subject index section labelled "Sgualus (other species)." -2-
