PROCLAMATION OF LOCAL EMERGENCY BY MAYOR MARIO KING REGARDING HURRICANE SALLY & EXECUTIVE ORDER OF VOLUNTARY EVACUATION

WHEREAS, Mayor, Mario King, of the City of Moss Point, Mississippi does hereby find that conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property have arisen within said the City of Moss Point, Mississippi due to the impending heavy rain, wind, and flood threat from Hurricane Sally; and

WHEREAS, at the time of the making of this proclamation, Hurricane Sally, which is predicted to have landfall winds in excess of 70 miles per hour, with excessive rain, and hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast on the morning of Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

WHEREAS, the aforesaid conditions of extreme peril warrant and necessitate the proclamation of the existence of a local emergency in order to provide for the health and safety of the citizens and the protection of their property within the affected jurisdiction; and

WHEREAS, Today, President Donald J. Trump declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Mississippi and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding.

WHEREAS, The NHC predicts the long-duration storm could produce as much as 30 inches of rain between southeastern Mississippi and the western Panhandle, with widespread amounts of 10 to 20 inches.

WHEREAS, the City of Moss Point, is requesting voluntary evacuation for low-lying areas, this includes residents living on rivers, river inlets, bayous, creeks, and in travel trailers, as well as people who live in modular homes, mobile homes, homes under construction and or partially constructed homes; and mandatory evacuation for low-lying areas that are currently flooded, and

WHEREAS, as Mayor, I find and determine that the public interest requires that I proclaim a state of local emergency as authorized by the Mississippi Code Annotated and other relevant laws;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MAYOR MARIO KING, HEREBY PROCLAIM that a local emergency exists in the City of Moss Point, Mississippi as of the 12th day of September 2020 due to the impending landfall of Hurricane Sally; and

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the City shall exercise all powers and authority granted unto it under the laws of the State of Mississippi to address this emergency.

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that this State of local emergency shall continue until the next regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen of Moss Point, Mississippi, wherein the same may be ratified, extended, or terminated, if necessary, as provided by law.
