In the late 1940s, the Young Men’s League for Bush Children operated a branch of the Postal Youth Movement in the region. In 1949, Mrs Wilson of Greenbank approached the director of the Postal Sunday School, who then asked the Baptist Flying Squad to visit the area. Initially they met at McTaggart’s house, which ironically was adjacent to the site of the first church in the region. They then procured the use of the lunch shed at the Maclean School. By 1955 the group began using the Park Ridge hall.

Barry Nason regularly attended the Park Ridge Sunday School:

My earliest memories would be around 1953, when Don Eagle, Maurie Little and Keith Little started the Sunday School service in the area. They were ex- Air Force men who had served in the Second World War, and they would drive around and use their own vehicles to pick up children and take them to various central localities in the various districts. They would start in the morning at Kingston, then to Chambers Flat and by early afternoon 1907 The First Church in they would be in Park Ridge. They were very well respected men in the community and every year we would have a big Sunday School Christmas Logan West Party.” (Mary Howells, Logan Ridges: from Woodridge to Park Ridge) While there are records of Congregational and Baptist congregations responding to the requests of locals in Browns Plains and Park Ridge by sending preachers to the area in the 1880s and 1890s, the first dedicated church building in the area was on the hill at Park Ridge around 1906.

Mary Howells, in her history of the western parts of Logan, records, “A one acre allotment was subdivided off the [Cordingley] property in 1907, opposite Talinga Road (sic. Drive). It was held in trust by Joseph Cordingley, George Breedon and James Scarf. This was the locality of the first church in Park Ridge. It was most likely a Church of England, as John and Mabel Cordingley hosted the first Church of England services in their home in Kingston in later years. The church was later burnt down in a bush fire and the property was sold off in 1952.” (Logan Ridges: from Woodridge to Park Ridge)

Life-long local resident, Laurie Brown, recently cleaned out his shed and found a timber box full of old hymn books, New Testaments and Sunday School records stamped with the words, “Park Ridge Sunday School 1906” inside the front covers. The Bibles were printed in 1904. It’s amazing to think that these worn out old books were delivered brand new to Park Ridge more than 100 years ago.

PARK RIDGE NEWS – OCTOBER 2020 7 Horse Talk Feature Horses Can Help by Julie Blase - Herd Theory

Few would disagree that horses are strong, beautiful, powerful and have a certain presence that makes us pay attention. What some do not yet know is that they are also intuitive, sensitive and sociable. It is the richness of the horses’ demeanour that makes them wonderful partners in self discovery.

Horses can sometimes make the best teachers. For anyone committed to their own personal growth, I encourage you, next time you get a chance to be with a horse, slow down and listen. I know they can’t speak to us, but I often invite my clients to sit for a moment with a horse, and to wonder, ‘If this horse could speak to me right now, what might they say?’ They are often amazed, and pleasantly surprised at the insight that arises from the thought bubble.

Horses are sometimes more like mirrors and have an uncanny capacity to reflect back emotions and attitudes. They are the ultimate vibe detector and can help us to become aware of how our presence is felt by others. If you want to know how you really are, stand with a horse.

Horses are definitely amplifiers. The size and power of horses increases our general awareness and disrupts our homeostasis. When referring to horses, we have all heard somebody say, ‘they know I’m scared of them’. One takeaway from such an encounter is that, fear is present and the horse has amplified it. Fear can be a debilitating emotion and horses are masters at drawing it to the surface. This is one of their gifts to us, as it provides a real opportunity to learn new skills to bring more peace to our lives.

Horses are also wonderful confidantes. Our gentle, calm horses at Herd Theory will patiently stand and listen as clients share their stories or unravel their thoughts. The horses bring no judgement to the conversation, they don’t interrupt and yet they offer real and honest feedback for those who are paying attention.

Several Logan West students who attend Hills College at Jimboomba were part of the recent year 6 Exhibition.

“The Exhibition challenges our Year 6 students to synthesise and apply the essential elements of the Primary Years Program, directing their own student-led transdisciplinary inquiry into a globally significant issue or topic of their choice”, Hills teaching staff explained.

The students were given freedom to explore the global issues of their choice. Students delved into topics like, ‘stem cell regeneration’, ‘deforestation’, ‘poverty’ and ‘gender inequality’. They then had the opportunity to build a presentation to help educate visitors to the Exhibition.

Congratulations to all the students for their passion and hard work.

Since then, Leo and Jill have put on numerous events to raise thousands for charities linked to floods, bushfires, cancer, and homelessness.

Things were turned upside down, like we all know, in March when the government orders came in - lockdown, isolate, social-distance.

Realising that inviting 25+ friends into their home was impossible, the couple decided they would embrace technology and continue their efforts online.

Last month, Leo sent out an email encouraging friends to join him in donating toward winter homelessness, and as an afterthought, included a video with him in front of the piano – hoping to establish a sort of virtual music trivia.

The rules were simple, he would play 10 ‘golden oldies’ tunes, with a hint, and supporters would reply to the email with how many songs they knew in the hope of winning some small prizes.

What shocked Leo was the amount of interest and discussion this generated.

Gotta Love It

I just finished watching a movie with my wife. We have very different taste in movies - so when we watch a movie together, it usually ends up being a sloppy rom-com. I get through it.

This particular movie gave me the idea for this topic so I guess it was worthwhile. The movie was about a guy “falling in love” with his lawyer while suing an internet dating site for failure to find love after 1000 dates. I feel so lame just writing that... it comes complete with a courtroom confession of his love for her... imagine an emoji of me rolling my eyes while shaking my head.

I can’t help but watch these movies with a healthy serving of skepticism. The whole premise of these movies is that the cornerstone of a relationship is an idealistic emotional state called, love. I could be wrong here but I think our young people are lapping this stuff up. Oh dear... I’m reminded of that old ad on TV where a couple getting married swapped vows to the effect of, “for as long as it suits me and I feel I like it.”

The biblical idea of love is one of mutual commitment no matter what. Okay, admittedly this sounds a bit sterile and not the best narrative for a rom-com. However, a relationship based on your emotions is rocky at best. A relationship based on a shared commitment gives the security for something deeper to flourish - including the emotional state that can be called love, that comes and goes and comes again. It is for this reason marriage has been a cornerstone of civilisation for thousands of years. A strong family unit, strong kids, strong society. Feelings of love are important. I look at my 3 month old and still feel all gushy - not so when he’s crying, the other two are making a racket, and it’s been a long day at work. But I still love them all though.

This is the idea of love put forward in the biblical narrative. God’s love is not based on a feeling towards humanity. It’s not like He looks at us and has butterflies in His stomach - so to speak. He loves, because He is love. It’s only in this where we can truly understand how God could love someone who isn’t lovely. Someone who has nothing praiseworthy that society desires. God loves us all. We are most secure as a society when we mimic that love. We are most dysfunctional when we don’t.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34 NIV

30 PARK RIDGE NEWS – OCTOBER 2020 Alabaster Theatre Celebrates a Decade of Storytelling I love my job so much! I am convinced that when I sit in a theatre, someone releases a jar of butterflies inside of me. The world is a little brighter when I find myself in a dark theatre.

I am the director at Alabaster Theatre and this October we are celebrating 10 years of original storytelling on the stage. I was feeling very nostalgic about it all one day. I was talking about some of our fail stories and high moments over the last decade. A friend listening, came to me later and asked if I would consider writing my story for the stage. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and so I started to draft a script and ideas, memories and life lessons I’ve learnt began to flood my mind.

In our very humble beginnings, I made the commitment on behalf of the company that we would never turn down an opportunity to perform. I decided that every door that opened was an opportunity to meet someone new and expose our love of storytelling to any size audience. Over the last ten years we have found ourselves in festivals, churches, schools, parks, films, flash mobs and theatres! We have stood in front of ten and we have stood in front of thousands.

Every story and performance has brought us to this moment right now. It has always been and will continue to be about that moment when the lights go down and we are honoured to take the stage and tell another story. This time, it is The Story of Us. Based off the lives of real directors, writers, musicians and performing artists. Raw and gritty, get a look at what it took a bunch of Alabaster Theatre artists to tell stories on the stage for 10 years!
