For series I guess my favorites (depending on my mood) are Aria (any of its seasons) and Natsume Yuujincho (any of its seasons). I guess they are slice of life shows, though both do have a continuing plot. I'm sure if you ask me tomorrow I'm very likely to give different answers. As for movies it's either Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke. Don --- Synchronet 3.13a-Win32 NewsLink 1.83 Subject: Re: What's your Favorite Anime of all time?!? (The festival's original title was Festival of Fantastic Cinema.) The more mainstream section (called Gran Angular ) showed 12 films only as opposed to the large offering of 27 films in the Fantastic section, evidence that this genre still predominates even though it is no longer exclusive. Japan made a big showing this year in both categories. Two feature-length animated films caught the attention of Sara Martin , an English literature teacher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and anime fan, who reports here on the latest offerings by two of Japan's most outstanding anime film makers, and gives us both a wee history and future glimpse of the anime genre - it's sure not kids' stuff and it's not always pretty. Japanese animated feature films are known as anime. This should not be confused with manga , the name given to the popular printed comics on which anime films are often based. Western spectators raised in a culture that identifies animation with cartoon films and TV series made predominately for children, may be surprised to learn that animation enjoys a far higher regard in Japan.

  • International Era
INTERNATIONAL ERA Welcome to the world of Super Robot Wars! Some time ago, people decided to make a game series about a whole bunch of mech series that people know and love crossing over, with things like Mazinger Z fighting the Zaku’s of Zeon; and people loved it! Now, it’s one of the most popular game series ever made, in Japan at least. This jump shall focus on the International Era of games. Origins: Drop-in: You literally just turn up at around the first stage of the plot, and are quickly accepted into the main group of heroes. Super Pilot: You stumbled across your machine one day, or perhaps it was given to you by a greater force. Either way, you focus more on power than speed. Real Pilot: You were trained for your life to pilot machines. You are part of either a military or a mercenary company, and have had training with modern weaponry. Ship Captain: You are in charge of a powerful battleship, for whatever reason, whether the ship is privately owned or from a military force. You will be commanding the brave souls fighting alongside you, as well as providing transport for them all. So What’s Happening Here? That, my friend, is a very good question! The answer is that so far, the international era has featured three seperate games, and you get to choose one to drop into the start of. I'll give you a brief summary of the overall plots of each game, the main plot being, of course, driven by the series in the game, which I go over in the notes section.

Animation Studies – Animated Dialogues, 2007 Michael Broderick Superflat Eschatology Renewal and Religion in anime “For at least some of the Superflat people [...] there is a kind of traumatic solipsism, even an apocalyptic one, that underlies the contemporary art world as they see it.” THOMAS LOOSER, 2006 “Perhaps one of the most striking features of anime is its fascination with the theme of apocalypse.” SUSAN NAPIER, 2005 “For Murakami, images of nuclear destruction that abound in anime (or in a lineage of anime), together with the monsters born of atomic radiation (Godzilla), express the experience of a generation of Japanese men of being little boys in relation to American power.” THOMAS LAMARRE, 2006 As anime scholar Susan Napier and critics Looser and Lamarre suggest, apocalypse is a major thematic predisposition of this genre, both as a mode of national cinema and as contemporary art practice. Many commentators (e.g. Helen McCarthy, Antonia Levi) on anime have foregrounded the ‘apocalyptic’ nature of Japanese animation, often uncritically, deploying the term to connote annihilation, chaos and mass destruction, or a nihilistic aesthetic expression. But which apocalypse is being invoked here? The linear, monotheistic apocalypse of Islam, Judaism, Zoroastra or Christianity (with it’s premillennial and postmillennial schools)? Do they encompass the cyclical eschatologies of Buddhism or Shinto or Confucianism? Or are they cultural hybrids combining multiple narratives of finitude? To date, Susan Napier’s work (2005, 2007) is the most sophisticated examination of the trans- cultural manifestation of the Judeo-Christian theological and narrative tradition in anime, yet even her framing remains limited by discounting a number of trajectories apocalypse dictates.1 However, there are other possibilities.
