Notification of an Incident or Discovery of Pollution
Bartow, Fla. (May 12, 2017) — Although no longer required, the Board of County Commissioners is providing you notification that a formal report was sent, via email, to [email protected].
Name of reporting party: Waste & Recycling Division
Installation Name: Polk County Board of County Commissioners
Installation Address: 7421 DeCastro Road
Installation Location: Winter Haven, 33880

Date and time of the incident or discovery: May 11, 2017, approximately 3:00 pm.
Location of the incident or discovery: North Central Landfill near the material recovery facility located north of Asbestos Alley. The leak occurred near the southeast corner of the southern paved area.
Suspected source and cause of incident or discovery: Contractor-owned paving equipment experienced a hydraulic hose break. It was discovered by Waste & Recycling staff at approximately 3:00pm. All leakage was contained on concrete pavement.
Type of pollution, including substance or contaminant name(s): Hydraulic fluid
Amount of pollution, including substance or contaminant name(s): approximately 1 gallon. Page 1 of 2
Medium (e.g. land, water, air) affected by pollution: Land
Potentially affected areas beyond installation property boundary: None. The hydraulic fluid spilled on concrete pavement and was immediately cleaned up by placing absorbent on the liquid and then disposing of used absorbent in the Class I landfill.
Potential risk to the public health, safety, or welfare: None. Hydraulic fluid and absorbent was immediately cleaned up and disposed in the active Class I landfill.
Identification of other parties notified of incident and time notification occurred: Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Southwest District, Solid Waste Section. Notified on May 3, 2017 via e-mail to Department of Environmental Protection Southwest District ([email protected]).
Any other information that may be helpful: A bucket was placed under the leaking equipment to contain any additional leakage. The equipment will be repaired or removed from the site as soon as possible.
