Madam,

I take the liberty of troubling your Ladyship with a line to say, that, about three weeks since walking in the grounds at Popes, I saw the figure of the little Dog with his head broken off by some mischievous person with the soul of a Goth, such as abuse the good nature of those who allow their grounds to be seen, by many such I suffered when I lived at Clifden.

I arrived here late last night and am immediately setting off for Beaconsfield, but as I understand that your Ladyship has purchased Pope's Grounds, will you think it a great indiscretion on my part, if I venture to say that, if the mutilated remains of the Dog are not of any particular value to your Ladyship, I feel strongly tempted to buy them, at the same time beseeching you to refuse my request if a doubt passes through your mind with regard to its propriety.

I have the Honor to remain

Your Ladyships very faithful

Humble Servant

Dear Madam

I can not sufficiently thank you for the obliging manner in which you have complied with my request and blush to have given your Ladyship so much trouble & much more that you did not instantly receive my thanks, which was owing to the stupidity of the servant who had placed the poor ill treated dog & your Ladyship's note in an empty room, & I was not made acquainted with your kindness till stepping into my carriage I

accidentally inquired if the servant was return'd. It was then impossible for me to write as I had exceeded nearly an hour an appointment at Uxbridge - Should the Chapter of Accidents discover the Dog's head, the debris will be more valuable, but can not add to the obligation with which I remain

Dear Madam Your Ladyship's

Obliged & very Humble Servant

(The writer was Mary Hamilton (1755-1831), suo jure Countess of Orkney. "Clifden" was Cliveden, Bucks, largely destroyed by fire in 1795, when the family moved to Taplow Court nearby. Mary Hamilton's grandfather was George Hamilton (1666-1739), 1st Earl of Orkney. He bought Cliveden in 1696 and, later, consulted Alexander Pope about the landscaping. He paid rates in Twickenham in 1700-02, possibly while Cliveden was being remodelled by Thomas Archer.
