Hunter College Students Demand BDS and Palestine Solidarity

May 20, 2021

Dear President Raab and Hunter College leadership,

Audre Lorde wrote: “It is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken.” In the case of Palestine, Hunter College’s silences overtly and quietly support Israeli violence and apartheid.

The time for Hunter College to stop contributing to Israeli violence is now. Hunter College must express full solidarity with Palestine immediately. Palestine cannot wait any longer.

Hunter College invests its own revenue in Israeli companies that have documented human rights violations, and has hosted Israeli army associations on campus. It is time for Hunter College to end its role in Israel’s colonization of Palestine.

We are issuing this call for action in response to Israel’s most recent human rights violations, including the forced expulsion of Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah and other neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, and throughout Palestine. These actions are just the most recent in Israel’s long history of forced dispossession and ethnic-cleansing of Palestinians.

Most devastatingly, Israel has conducted air raids in Gaza for ten consecutive days, killing at least 227 Palestinian people, 64 of whom were children. More than 1,530 individuals are injured. Israel continues to bomb residential areas in Gaza, killing 42 civilians, including 2 medical doctors, 10 children and 16 women, in a single attack. Israel continues to demolish hospitals, schools, orphanages, bookshops, journalists and media organizations. These bombings are illegal under international law. This has exacerbated a humanitarian catastrophe involving shortages of medicines, food, electricity, and clean water in Gaza.

Since 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinian people were forced into exile and saw their homes and villages stolen or destroyed by Zionist militias, colonization and dispossession has remained an ongoing process to this day, and is especially exacerbated by U.S.’s political economic ‘aid’ to Israel. Palestinians continue to endure land-theft and infringements on their basic rights.

As members of the Hunter College community: Palestinians and allies; students, professors, and organizations; we stand against the Israeli apartheid regime in the form of settler-colonialism, illegal occupation, and ethnic cleansing. We stand in full solidarity with Palestinian liberation movements and we hope and expect our administration to follow suit.

We, the undersigned Hunter College and CUNY students, faculty, student groups, and allied non-CUNY organizations, demand the following:

1. Divest: Divestment from companies that aid in the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians imposed by Israel

Hunter College administration must publicly advocate for CUNY to divest from all such companies as stipulated in the CUNY Apartheid Divest Resolution. We must pass a BDS resolution on Hunter College campus. We refuse to fund genocide with our tuition.

CUNY has at least $1,093,900 in investments in weapon manufacturers, which assist the Israeli military in maiming and murdering Palestininans. As the CUNY Apartheid Divest Resolution demonstrates, companies, including Boeing, General Electric, Lockheed Martin supply missiles, jets, helicopters, bombs, and munitions to the Israeli military, which aid in the inhumane slaughtering of Palestinians according to CUNY Portfolio Holdings from 2014. Companies such as Caterpillar and Cemex fund heavy engineering machinery which aid in the demolishing of Palestinian homes, the construction of the illegal setttlements, and the Apartheid Wall.

We also stand in support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, a non- violent form of international protest, which calls on Israel to comply with international law by ending the occupation and colonization of Palestine, ensuring equal rights for Arab-Palestinian citizens, and protecting and promoting the Right of Return for Palestinian refugees. As such, CUNY should divest from manufacturers which aid in Israel’s Occupation.

We refuse to support any form of state-sanctioned violence. We call on CUNY to cut ties with all companies that are directly involved in human rights violations, and to adopt a socially responsible investment plan in which investments are not made to companies that participate in the human rights violations. As just one example of CUNY’s complicity, Boeing, in which CUNY has significant investments, supplied weapons used to attack Palestinians during the 2014 summer assault on Gaza, which, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, damaged or destroyed over 144 kindergartens, killed 2,205 Palestinians, displaced over 500,000, and left 108,000 homeless.

2. Prohibit: Ban all former and current Israeli army associations on campus

We demand Hunter College ban and terminate invitations to or reservations by the Israeli military, its members, and/or affiliates. They do not make our campus or our students feel safe.

Hunter has made contracts with Israeli officials and supported programs which support the IDF. An alleged ‘cultural’ club named AHAVA Hunter hosted an event with Michael Oren, the former Israeli deputy minister in Israel's racist government. Israeli state officials should not be welcome on our campuses. Furthermore, Hunter Hillel invited Mordechai Kedar, an Israeli professor who advocated for the rape of Palestinian women as a war tactic. It was only upon intervention from The Hunter Women and Gender Studies Department that the event was prohibited from taking place.

Furthermore, in September 2020, AHAVA Hunter hosted a workshop of “defense” tactics developed by the Israeli ‘Defense’ Forces. In reality, the IDF is notorious for their extrajudicial executions and other unlawful killings, using torture— even against children, suppression of freedom of expression including government surveillance, and excessive use of force against peaceful protesters. “Defense” tactics developed by the IDF should not be spread and promoted among Hunter students.

3. Solidarity: Release a statement in solidarity with Palestinians, and in support of Palestinian students’ mental health

Hunter College must release a letter that expresses solidarity with Palestinian students who are affected by the death count and loss from the horrors of the past few weeks of Israeli violence. The letter should include language about Palestinian students’ specific loss and coping in this moment; and not equate it with Israeli casualties.

Palestinian students at Hunter are deeply impacted by Hunter’s tacit acceptance and encouragement of Israeli propaganda. Students at Palestine Solidarity Alliance have previously been harassed at club meetings, and have been unjustifiably accused of anti-semitism. Meanwhile, government-sponsored trips to Israel are encouraged and advertised on campus and given additional Hunter funding. We ask that Hunter College make amends for its past history of complicity in continuing anti-Palestinian xenophobia and racism.

Many Hunter College students are members of the Palestinian diaspora, and therefore living examples of anti-colonial resistance. Palestinians students in our community are affected by the loss and trauma of the past few weeks. We need to feel welcome and comfortable on our campuses.

On mental health awareness month, when Palestinians are experiencing extreme killings and violence by the hands of the Israeli government, and families of Palestinians are mournful; Hunter cannot continue to ignore our Palestinian student community. ___ Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at Hunter College on December 10, 1965 condemning South African Apartheid and the opression of black Africans. Now, more than 55 years later, Hunter must continue and prove this legacy of international solidarity by stating its support of Palestinian resistance.

Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, and numerous other organizations agree that Israel’s policies and treatment towards Palestinians constitutes apartheid. This is not a ‘complex’ ‘conflict,’ but a clear pattern of human rights violations, military occupation, and settler-colonialism.

As students and members of the Hunter community unequivocally dedicated to Justice in Palestine, we declare our unwavering commitment to the liberation of the Palestinian people. We urge you to join us and become part of an expansive international solidarity community that stands united against oppression. Take a stand against Israel’s colonialism and apartheid.
