Woehlcke Course Description: Literature and Composition (Academic), a diverse, thematically structured course, expands upon the writing process and the development of literary analysis skills. Students write a series of analytical and reader response essays and read from a variety of literary genres. Instruction focuses on analyzing literary elements, analyzing author’s purpose, and writing with precision and focus. Additionally, students learn and practice research skills and processes. Grammar usage within the context of students’ reading and writing is an integral component. Students also continue their study of vocabulary through close analysis of literary passages. Though many years of English education can have a bearing on their results, students take the Literature Keystone Exam in grade 10 in addition to their final exams. Course Rationale: The works in the tenth-grade curriculum compel all of us to examine who we are as storytellers. As students progress through the course, they engage in conversations about how we communicate our identities through the observations, insights, and stories we tell. To this end, students closely examine the obvious ways in which we communicate tone through language, movement, and the nature of our conflicts. These conversations yield valuable dialogue and allow multiple openings to evaluate how an author forms a literary identity. Equally important, students have the opportunity to self-reflect on their own identity. Ultimately, students can see how conflict shapes identity and produces insight and growth. -

Clicker Training (CT) is a method to train animals based on the use of a device that emits a sound to be associated as a marker that predicts the delivery of something wanted (food). It is believed that CT decreases training time compared to other types of training that use different markers, such as voice. Herein, we used two-month-old miniature piglets to assess whether CT decreased the number of repeats required to learn complex behaviors compared to voice-trained animals. Furthermore, we compared the number of correct choices of animals from both groups when tested for the discrimination of objects. The results indicated that CT decreased the number of repetitions required to learn to fetch an object but reduced the animals’ ability to make correct decisions during discriminatory trials compared to voice-trained animals. -

Abstract In this thesis we create a method to allow dogs and humans to interact over the Internet. In particular, we generalize an established dog training technique known as "clicker-training" such that the remote and co-located interactions are reported by dog owners to be similar. In the process of creating this computer-mediated interaction, we learn what it means to design an interface for a creature with very different sensory modalities than humans. Dogs are not "furry humans" but entirely different creatures with very different perceptual, motor, and cognitive systems than humans. This work is significant because by systematically applying HCI design principles to non-humans, we include animals in the HCI community. -
